Yes I think the reason is that if you did binary you would need longer codons to encode for the 20 amino acids, and then the adjacent AAs wouldnt be bindable by the ribosome because they would be too far apart due to the longer codons

They first detect bounding boxes using a CNN. They use a multiscale to detect text of multiple sizes, and allow four orientations of text. Given the CNN heat map I guess they use some simple algorithm to draw the actual boxes
