In the city my 26 year old daughter will soon be earning more than when I retired as a consultant without the debt of a medical student. Young people doing medicine are mad as things stand, with absolutely no suggestion of change. Study maths or economics.

Government have got what they want - cheaper quasi consultants/GPs. They have no interest in quality of care. It’s just a numbers game for them. Patients will have to check on the qualifications of all the nurses and doctors they come in contact with.

The 3 day strike is the least of your problems. You should be more worried about the number of doctors walking away from the NHS each day on a permanent basis. Early retirement, going abroad or just driven into another career.

Difficult enough squeezing the curriculum into 4 years. Interesting what won’t be taught now. Medical students already highly stressed with high incidence of mental health problems. This will probably break many.

This is important. The public (and that includes patients) want cheap healthcare subsidised by NHS staff. This dispute is with the public as much as the Govt. Do not expect any concession from the Govt. They will play the long game. Only solution is coordinated mass resignations.

It's ridiculous that the system does not facilitate F1 jobs being in hospitals where students have spent time. Might not be possible for all, but should be for most. Clearly better for so many reasons, including finding accomodation now that you don't live in a residence.

Not quite that simple. Pay rises have to be paid for by increased productivity or increased prices. The latter leads to the rate of inflation increasing. End up back to where you started from. Needs slightly more radical solutions.

Biggest problem is without pay restoration there won't be a functioning NHS. It has reached that point as doctors leave the NHS for better pay abroad. My advice to anyone considering medicine as a career is don't, but if you are determined be prepared to leave the UK.

I think being a GP is the toughest job in medicine and I cannot see how PAs, with their limited training, can be expected to pick up those patients with significant pathologies, in amongst the masses of routine cases.

Agree. It was the 12-30 year olds who suffered the most. Many elderly people when asked were quick to give the same message - priority was their grandchildren.

People dying waiting for attention in A&E departments on a daily basis at the moment, strike or no strike. That's if they can get an ambulance to take them to hospital in the first place. The Brisitch public are responsible because of the choices they make at the ballot box.

Ridiculous target set by Labour of 50% of students going to Uni. Result is lots of worthless degrees. Students who would benefit getting poor quality teaching. Many going to Uni who would be better served by apprenticeships or training in work.

It’s a great ruse. Staff who cannot go abroad to work. Anyone with any sense will have to pay to see an actual doctor privately, cutting NHS waiting lists. Only issue will be the need to build bigger mortuaries.

The problem is that Physician Assistants are being asked to do jobs they are not qualified to carry out. This should have been sorted out long ago, but wasn't. You are blaming the wrong people. There are roles for PAs but not the ones currently being carried out.

Comment about doctors protecting income is a nonsense. At the moment Physician Assistants earn significantly more than their medical counterparts, who will have had at least 3 years more training and usually a lot more. Funding has been shifted from Drs to PAs, so can't see a doc

Afraid there are some very basic problems. A poor education system leads to a poorly educated workforce and a weak economy. In turn that leads to a reliance on the state. Many need support but others use it rather than go out and do something.

Pain relief is dreadfully managed with underprescribing of opiates. Afraid it reflects the inexperience of medical and nursing staff. Perhaps the answer is to take your own analgesia with you into hospital.

Physician Assistants are more suited to a hospital environment where it is easier to control and supervise what they do. The problem is most are in general practice where this is not the case. They are seeing undifferentiated patients and not being supervised adequately.

GEM students have already done a degree and are more mature. However they still find the 4 year course very intense. No way will a school leaver cope. There are already huge mental health problems amongst medical students.

I assume this is supported by how parents behave. The success of a child's education is dependent on the combination of good schooling and good parenting. The presence or absence of formal exams is of minor importance. I am sure Japanese children are "tested" in some way.

The biggest problem will be over investigation. Patients exposed unnecessarily to ionising radiation. Hopefully doctors learn during their training programmes. Little likelihood of that with Physician Assistants.
