It's definitely creating new variants. Now, if those variants "accidentally" escaped the lab, it would only bring in more profits. That's a perverse incentive that just can't be ignored. It's just as bad to create significantly new variants that current vaccines don't cover.

When you understand that this "movement" is one of hundreds of disinformation / astroturfing campaigns run by Heartland Institute. I even met one of their handlers (the guy who runs US Transhumanist Party). One of the reasons they exist is global warming denialism.
Basically, it's not that AI isn't necessarily not an existential risk. It might be. It's that rn it's our only path to solving all of the other more pressing existential risks we have:
Climate
Scarcity of energy
Worse pandemics
.... and on and on...

As a data scientist, that study was obviously flawed and the main flaw is that correlation is not causation, especially if prior cases are known, that paper is a bit like navel gazing.

I was banned many times for speaking the truth. Specifically, I publicly announced that the virus is most likely a bioweapon project and therefore very dangerous and I called out the pandemic several weeks before WHO did. There would be no pandemic if science wasn't censored.

Haha. I happen to be an algorithm design expert. I've designed mind blowing algorithms that most google engineers would find extremely hard to even understand and program. Yet, if I applied for a job there I'm sure a mediocre engineer would be teasing me with silly problems. :)
