In Jan 2024 I led submission of letter to Lancet arguing their 7 "countdown" reports on climate change & health too optimistic. On May 29 we were advised of "shortlisting", ie fate still uncertain. It contains this figure. Excessive fear is harmful; so too is excessive optimism.

You leave me to speculate that someone has warned that your role with BSN! will harm your career. I was warned off this topic by (Nobel Laureate) R. Rich, in Jan 2021. I kept going, despite that; but I'm much older than you, I guess I had less to lose. There is so much struggle.
We didn't choose headline, but we did write the text. We don't know the cause but we know the doubt re a lab origin was hidden, by so-called leaders in public health, and then suppressed. With insufficient transparency & humility trust in science erodes.
short 🧵: Dr. Peter Daszak has been ordered to testify before US Congress in Washington DC today (Nov 14, 2023) regarding his alleged involvement in the creation and accidental release of SARS-CoV-2, and his involvement in a conspiracy to cover this up. I hope I'm wrong but [1/4

I'm still obsessed with covid-19 .. apart from direct/indirect death toll there is long covid and repeat covid. Almost alone among Australian epidemiologists I think a lab leak plausible. Is it coincidence that I worked as a co-editor of EcoHealth for 4 years? Character matters.
Redfield (former director US CDC): "As far as we’re concerned, if a virus is taught to or evolves in a lab to infect human tissue more efficiently, that’s gain of function." "hallmarks of scientific arrogance and failures in the containment system".

One side has conflicts of interest; the other fears a human-made tragedy based on the hubris of "gain of function" of potentially pandemic pathogens. This is a terrifying possibility your own journal greatly underestimates. History will judge.
In 2020 UNEP commissioned me to lead a 70 page report, funded by govt of Norway, into origin & implications of the pandemic. Called "Covid-19 - a warning" it had 34 named reviewers. UNEP are now delaying its publication; I can only speculate why, but I have 2 main theories 1/3
Scientists with connections to the Wuhan Institute of Virology — including Anthony Fauci — steered the U.S. national security state away from hypotheses about the origins of COVID-19 that could implicate their research

1/6 I tweet into the wilderness, I know. Every day I hear horrible stuff re the pandemic. I have excellent reasons for thinking COVID-19 was caused by a lab leak - and even if it wasn't, the next one could be. I also have excellent credentials; I worked with Peter Daszak as 1 of

Covid-19 is much worse than SARS, maybe 1000 times worse; because of its capacity for significant asymptomatic transmission; SARS can be controlled by good barrier nursing (same as Ebola, Nipah etc), but SARS-CoV-2 requires lockdowns
Launched!
To all those doctors who think that Frankenstein lab viruses are science fiction - please think again; explore this website, raise awareness, take action. Virologists did not prevent COVID-19; in fact they may have caused it. And could again.
Despite the complacency (complicity?) of NYT, Nature and Science I think the global compass is shifting: covid-19's origin was a lab accident until proved otherwise; if so its foundation was hubris, its burial by Fauci, Farrar etc is a form of contempt of public interest.
"there is far too much “denial” going on at high levels of science around the COVID-19 lab leak theory. People, including in the media, need to consider the conflict of interests of people who completely ridicule this idea as a conspiracy”. Sky News May 18

I've been arrested for climate activism once (2014) even though I was an IPCC author at the time it made little public impression and it harmed my academic career. I'm too intimidated to do it again; but I agree we are in deep trouble.
@WHO
This is a dreadful decision, for several reasons:
1. Wellcome Trust's hypocrisy during Farrar's leadership (re climate change and their investment in Shell).
2. Farrar's indisputable role in covering up uncertainty re the origin of SARS-Co-V-2.
Hubris, madness, no apology: EcoHealth Alliance, working with Wuhan Inst of Virology, aimed to create mutant viruses “to better predict the capacity of coronaviruses to infect people.” To sequence spike protein from bat coronaviruses “creating mutants"
David Baltimore was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine, in 1975. He discovered reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that synthesizes DNA from RNA. He was president of Caltech (1997-2006). How is that mainstream science is not questioning COVID's origin? Conflicts of interest? China?

6/6 chance of a past & risk of future lab leaked pandemic was simply a right wing conspiracy, not a plausible horror. A mass movement of citizens & scientists is needed to better regulate rogue virologists & others who are complacent, including many science & health journalists.

shifts chance of synthetic origin of pandemic from 99% to 100%. When will "elite" of global science & journalists concede their earlier errors? It's way past time they take a fresh look.
Additional misconduct .. comes unexpectedly from the anti-scientific behavior of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) leadership, who support GoF research, and a small clique of GoF virologists, some of whom have undisclosed connections to Wuhan labs."
I'm intrigued Dr Gao feels able to state this. Yes, a lab leak is obviously plausible. Yet the "elite" of western virologists and media continue to suppress this possibility - in so doing they increase the risk of a lab leak causing a new pandemic.
Australian TV, led by
@normanswan

@edwardcholmes
(who blocks me); this is not science, this is propaganda. Cause of pandemic is almost certainly hubris/error.
NIH has not told American people, or scientific community, what it knows about the origins of SARS-CoV-2. NIH has resisted release of critical documentation, dragged its feet until forced to disclose highly redacted material by FOIA lawsuits.
It seems that many "top scientists" decided to suppress debate in order to protect science, especially in China. What a misjudgement, to politicise science, including by Sir Jeremy Farrar, head of Wellcome, journal editors and some universities.
"Right now, it's quite dangerous for scientists to stick their necks out and go against some very powerful scientists who have made it clear that they prefer a natural origin."
No one has directly threatened me, but silence from most colleagues is clear.
"To Baker, Fauci is guilty not of malevolence but of the scientist’s cardinal sin — hubris."
“He built way too many high-containment laboratories and funded way too much dangerous — really appallingly dangerous — research.”
"The alternative hypothesis is quite straightforward. And that is that there was a lot of research underway in the United States & China on taking SARS-like viruses, manipulating them in the laboratory, and creating potentially far more dangerous viruses"

UNEP report (I'm lead author) published 2 days ago builds on recent WHO report (below) to warn of significant risks from virological research. Link to recent UNEP report via my pinned tweet; it had 34 reviewers, concluded GOF is possible cause of covid-19
1. It speculates & reviews evidence of a lab origin, and it criticises gain of function; 2. It doesn't strongly link covid to either biodiversity loss or to climate change (though each is remotely plausible) - hence, I think, this unsettles some UNEP power holders. Either way 2/3

I think NIH is getting nervous. IMO, their denial is sophistry, avoiding the spirit of the issue; presumably to reduce their moral and legal liability. Good tho' that they strongly support need for further investigation by the WHO into pandemic origin.
"Without a positive host or hard genetic evidence, it is simply incredulous that this virology clique is asking the public to accept their faulty logic, with a docile media repeating their lines ad libitum."
Slide 4 states the threat from "lab-enhanced" viruses is intensifying. Does Daszak still stand by this statement? The GVP took this risk so seriously in 2017 that they had two slides making the same point, also Slide 2 of the same set (pic follows).

Why no mention of GOF? Next pandemic may be deadlier than COVID-19 esp if we continue to reward virologists to create lab-variants, in whatever country they want, governed by local standards. Is this topic in yr f/coming book? "Global Health Security: A Blueprint for the Future"

Prof Weiss is correct that in some cases grant creators have a moral right to their IP; this is not one of those cases; even 1000 deaths should cause them reflection; here we have millions. Arrogance of GOFOC supporters is off the scale; they need governance & a social license.

NIH have much to hide, "NIH itself had deleted the sequences from its own archive at the request of researchers in Wuhan. Now, he was hoping Fauci and his boss, NIH director Francis Collins, could help him identify other deleted sequences that might shed light on the mystery."
"According to Ms. Kopp, more than 1000 documents and progress reports from NIH and EcoHealth have still not been released."
If the pandemic is natural, then why not reveal all this?
Slide 39 states "foster transparency" as a "core principle".
