yeah. Been sitting on this for a while. Still been unpacking it for half a year. But 10:10 Games were horrific. They made so many promises when I first joined, partly to shake the abuse allegations that were following them from Tt. But none of them ever lasted.

It was fine for a half year or so. I was going through my probation without any trouble, my line manager was happy with me and I felt I was developing nicely and fitting in with the team (the team were great, as always is the way in the game biz) but at 6 months it got shit. fast

Suddenly my team leader raised complaints about how I worked. Too distracted, too many bugs, not enough time in the office. I was shocked because I'd not heard ANY bad feedback about the work I did, mostly because it was all prototyping at that stage? We were plotting things out.

suddenly my probation was extended. Suddenly they wanted me in the office every day. Suddenly the code team lead was peering over my shoulder. Every time I made an error he would stop by to say "You put another bug in. You need to think about your brand, how this makes you look."

It was a shock. It was frustrating. I didn't know what went wrong. Every time I saw a build light up, I felt sick in case it was my fault and I'd get another visit, or would I get pulled aside again for the sin of having a video up while I worked.

I told HR that I have ADHD and it can affect how I focus, how I work, how it plays into my workflow. She sat in with me as I disclosed it to the team lead. He said he didn't really get it, but okay.
Nothing really changed. I later found out he didn't even tell my line manager.

Towards the end of my review period, there was a demo for a piece of work I'd been on for a month. I wasn't there for it. The next day my team lead told me how poorly it had gone. I was shocked and asked what had gone wrong.
It was an issue with the editor. Not my fault at all.

In the end they just dropped the 5-days in office requirement. At my final probation review, everything was fine and he was happy with my improvement.
Found out later btw, my line manager had never agreed to extending my probation but had been pressured into it.

That was when I joined the union because it seemed like something was very sour in the air.
I had felt particularly singled out and targeted here. Out of everyone, I was called out for complaining about the game. EVERYONE I knew had been complaining at some point, to some degree.

So during a review meeting which was intended for us to give feedback to management... we said as much.
I probably said too much, looking back. I wasn't as safe as I thought I was. They said they valued feedback, but the design lead got angrier and angrier throughout the meeting.

Things were... fine. For the next few months. Except almost everyone I knew pretty much had zero faith in the game. The design decisions were bizarre. Levels were getting change after change, often for the worse. Mechanics would vanish one day to the next.

That afternoon, my team lead called me. He said that someone had told the studio director I had been complaining a lot about the company. He suggested they could find me somewhere else to work. I was stunned. I said no, I'm okay here, I just think things need improvement.

My line manager quit around this point. We were told there'd be a new manager, who'd take charge of things. The general mood was that we'd see how this new manager handled things and maybe it would improve.
Obviously it certainly didn't for me.

And I did, and the system gradually took shape. I was proud of it, in fact. It was a tough piece of work and really challenged me, but I was gradually meeting all the requirements and it was actually looking kind of cool - it was nice to find one thing I really was pleased with.

The new manager arrived and I was assigned a new task; a pretty big mechanic that was recycling some old prototype work from another coder. I stated I was tentative about taking it up solo, but that I'd give it a shot.

It was complicated. Not helped by the various demands coming, again, from the design lead. Or that we were working online multiplayer into things at last. But I wasn't given a deadline, just presumably trusted that I would get it done as quickly and as best as I could.

10:10 were shit. They lied, they were abusive, they made me feel like shit when I was doing my best to find things to enjoy in a project that sucked. Because that's the professional thing to do.
My guess is I bruised their egos.

The day the new junior started, they fired me. Not before I introduced myself and got to know her a bit. I was just stunned. I quietly picked out my things and left. They were told I was no longer there. I can only assume it was a shock for them like it was for me.

What people are saying isn't some targeted insult at your parents but a comment on actions that have clearly affected them in the long term. This kind of thing can damage your kids' perspective of you for years. It might not. But it might.

It's fun to play around with what I can knock together in under an hour. Made this in about 40 minutes or so, concept is a tower defense game where you can hop into turrets to overcharge them and take manual control for a little while!
