Long-awaited details of the government’s voter ID scheme have now been released, including details of which IDs will be accepted at the polling station. The list contains plenty of options for older voters, but few for younger voters.
NEW: There have been a massive 2.8m applications to
#RegisterToVote
since the election was called.
That's over a million more than the comparable pre-deadline period during the last election, which saw 1.7m applications
The government have finally published the list of ID they will allow you to use to vote - six of the Government-accepted IDs are specifically targeted at older people, while almost none are aimed at younger people.
The Lords was already the largest second chamber in the world. There are now over 800 unelected peers, voting on our laws for life.
It's time for an overhaul.
At a cost, estimated by the Cabinet Office to be up to £180,000,000 per decade, this law to force people to bring photo ID to vote is an expensive distraction from the problems the country faces. Add your name here:
Andy Burnham has called on Labour to seize the moment and back proportional representation. Labour members have already backed reform, it's time for the party to follow suit.
Appointing people to the Lords for life after they 'stand down' or lose their seat makes a mockery of democracy. The second chamber is long overdue an overhaul
Why do boundaries matter? They often decide who wins. Look how control of our fictional town council changes between the reds and the blues as the ward boundaries move, even though nobody changes their vote.
The
#ElectionsBill
, which passed last night, will make it harder to vote for millions, while making it easier for the government to control the Electoral Commission. It’s a travesty that parliamentarians passed a Bill that erodes our precious democracy.
It will feel like an insult to many to see Liz Truss handing out peerages to friends and supporters after her short stint as prime minister. It looks like the political class dishing out rewards for failure at a time when many people are still suffering.
No prime minister should be able to appoint their friends and supporters to sit in our Parliament for life. It's time to abolish the House of Lords and create a smaller elected chamber.

Our research team has spent the day crunching the results to make the most accurate possible model of how the 2024 parliament would have looked with a proportional voting system.
Under a proportional electoral system, it wouldn't matter which party you supported - every voter's choice would be treated equally.
#MakeSeatsMatchVotes
We're deeply concerned by plans to force MPs to return to Parliament next week - with only a small proportion being able to participate in debates due to social distancing
The government must not shut off virtual proceedings without a proper replacement
Spending millions of pounds per general election to make voting harder and slower for people who don't have the right paper work is the exact opposite of what the government should be doing.
Keir Starmer: “I also think on electoral reform, we’ve got to address the fact that millions of people vote in safe seats and they feel their voice doesn’t count. That’s got to be addressed. We will never get full participation in our electoral system until we do that"
The Irish leaders’ debate is really quite shocking. The three leaders have a detailed grasp of complex welfare and tax issues, they are polite and courteous, they admit mistakes, they say sorry. They might even be largely honest. Why is all that possible in Ireland but not here?
The House of Lords was already bursting at the seams, but this latest batch of appointments from the PM takes numbers over 830. That's over 800 unelected lawmakers voting on decisions that affect all of us for life, with no way for voters to kick them out
To hear Keir Starmer coming out explicitly in support of a constitutional convention and reforms of our electoral system is a welcome development in the leadership contest.
Millions of voters have gone totally unrepresented, with worryingly warped results in many areas.
The Conservatives have won a majority on a minority of the vote, with an increase in seat share high above their increase in vote share
This is based on the votes cast - remember, Westminster's broken first past the post system makes many people vote tactically, so the votes would be different under any PR system
"The Conservatives gained an MP for every 38,300 votes nationally in 2019, while it took Labour 50,817 votes, Liberal Democrats 334,122 and Greens 864,743 (the Brexit Party had nobody to show for 642,303)"
The Government have announced plans to sneak a whole new section into the
#ElectionsBill
, which has already had its second reading, to impose first past the post on all mayoral and PCC elections.
While the government like to claim that the boundary review will mean "Every vote cast in a general election will carry equal weight" the only way that can happen is by scrapping first past the post.
"Conservative marginal seats, those with majorities of fewer than 8,000 votes, have received 1.5 times the amount of funding per person than all other constituencies"
Imposing Westminster’s broken first-past-the-post system on voters for mayoral and PCC elections would be a step backwards for democracy. It's an unwanted and deeply concerning move
The House of Lords is clearly not fit for purpose. MPs shouldn't be able to stand down or lose their seats and then be handed a life pass to vote on our laws for life (with £305 a day tax-free as an added sweetener)
MPs will discuss the need for electoral reform tonight. It's the first Commons debate on proportional representation since the General Election, which saw 68% of votes go ignored.
It's time for a genuinely democratic electoral system where everyone is heard!
If the majority of voters are to the left, they should probably have a left wing councillor. First past the post can't deliver this basic level of representation.
The highest number of applications so far this election was on our National Voter Registration Day last Friday, which saw over 300,000

applications. Almost double any other day since the election was called
UK elections are efficient and well organised now - we should be looking at how we can increase turnout, not put up barriers at the ballot box. Sign our petition here:
I just can’t get past Labour winning 65% of seats off 34% of the vote.
Absolutely wild mismatch between the headline result and, well, everything else.
Britain is now a multi-party system, and first-past-the-post can’t cope.
There were an estimated 9m missing from the electoral roll as of December 2018 - so there's still a long way to go to close the gap.
Tuesday is the last day to register before the election - deadline MIDNIGHT. Keep spreading the word

At last night's Commons debate on electoral reform, Cabinet Office minister Chloe Smith said: "Every voter needs to know their vote carries equal weight, no matter where it is cast in the UK"
That's absolutely right...and it's impossible under Westminster's warped voting system
We shouldn't put up a paywall around polling stations. You shouldn't have to take time off work to go to a distant townhall to request your right to vote, just because you don't drive or go on expensive foreign holidays.
Appointing your own brother is a nail in the coffin for claims that the is some kind of independent house of experts. This is a chamber for the PM's pals and party loyalists.
These are the names of every female MP ever.
489 women have become MPs since 1918 (compared to the 442 male MPs in parliament right now).

The next general election must be the last conducted under Westminster's warped and undemocratic voting system. It's time for proportional representation
Voters shouldn't have to second-guess each other to work around a voting system that doesn't work in our multi-party age. The problem is first past the post.
The Windrush scandal showed us the dangers of schemes like this. Make no mistake – these plans will leave tens of thousands of legitimate voters voiceless.
Of course it's not impossible - but it's pointless when MPs can vote digitally in 15 minutes. They could be holding the government to account or doing casework in that time instead
Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg will publish plans for how MPs will vote in parliament ahead of the return of MPs tomorrow.
The plan - being finalised this AM - is apparently for MPs to form a kilometer-long queue in order to vote (THREAD)
Rather than abolishing district councils unfairly dominated by one party to give more power to unitary authorities unfairly dominated by another - we should abolish the first past the post system that makes them so unrepresentative
Imposing first past the post on the the Mayor of London and mayoral elections across the UK, is a major step backwards that will see million pound budgets handed to people the majority don't want.
Another reminder that Westminster is almost alone in using the decrepit First Past the Post system. Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the London Assembly and European elections all use proportional systems
#EUelections2019
No Prime Minister should be able to appoint anyone they like to the major offices of state, simply by making them a Lord. However long David Cameron serves in this role, he will be able to sit in the House of Lords for life.
Today

The UK’s largest trade union has now added its voice to the growing movement calling for an end to our outdated FPTP system.
If the government do not propose an effective and safe alternative to digital voting,
@LindsayHoyle_MP
must step in to ensure shielding MPs are not sidelined, and voters are not made voiceless
Statement from Electoral Commission. They say overall the elections were “well run” but that voter- ID “posed a greater challenge for some groups in society and that some people were regrettably unable to vote as a result.”

@labourlewis
urges Keir Starmer to back proportional representation at the Labour for a New Democracy launch:
"We should lead by example in a spirit of pluralism and engagement. That starts with backing a fairer electoral system"
