Istanbul, one of the world’s largest and densest metropolises, lies just north of the North Anatolian Fault, a strike-slip fault spanning northern Türkiye with a history of producing damaging earthquakes.
This is how my Earthquake Seismology students expressed themselves during the finals week on my office window and I don’t have the heart to erase it. It definitely made my day this morning after a long break❤️
PhD position available in my group for fall 2020. Interested in global seismology? 3D forward modeling and FWI of the mantle? Integrating new emerging data sets into tomography? Visualize the Earth with VR/AR? Deadline Jan. 1st. Contact me for further info & spread the word pls!

The goal of SCOPED is to establish a novel hybrid cloud+HPC computational platform for the broader scientific community that combines large-scale seismic processing and modeling with a suite of open-source seismic codes.
I just learned that the station we deployed on the Mines campus last year was named "EBRU" and the data is available from
@IRIS_EPO
! Not sure if there is any other station with a human name. I guess a good opportunity to teach students naming conventions but still embarrassing😳

Earth's Coriolis force often refers to how our planet's rotation affects motions of atmosphere and ocean, but it also impacts seismic waves.

In February, we had the very special opportunity to conduct a fibre-optic seismology experiment in Istanbul and we received many questions. These videos are an attempt to explain fibre-optic seismology to a broader audience, especially in Turkey.

The best thing I’ve heard/experienced during the last three weeks: my group still had the group meeting last Thursday discussing about their research and helping each other even if I was not there because of a virtual workshop I had to attend. I am proud of them!
Final with the conveners:) the summary is we should have/create more opportunities to bring compt. and domain scientists together and training the new gen of researchers is essential to facilitate HPC/cloud & big-data based research.

Well it took two weeks. Really proud we finally took this first step (and cheers to

Felt that one‼️
After more than three years of listening to the soft rumbles of Mars, I just felt by far my biggest “marsquake” yet: looks like about magnitude 5. My team is studying the data to learn more. Science rewards patience!

Hello. Isn’t the faculty job market depressing? Well I have good news.
@coschoolofmines
is hiring not one... not two... but *12* new faculty members in three clusters. This cluster is probably most aligned for you, my followers. (1/2)

AFAD yada Kandilli daha kotu is yapmis degil.
