Happy National Puzzle Day! 🧩 Earth’s history can be thought of as a puzzle, and geology as one of the major tools to help piece it together. Geology and the rock record hold lots of information to help put the puzzle together and understand the larger picture. #nationalpuzzleday

It’s time to celebrate one of Colorado’s oldest rocks: Pikes Peak granite! It formed 1.08 billion years ago deep in Earth’s crust. ~70 Mya, the Laramide Orogeny uplifted Pikes Peak granite along with the Rockies. It is so iconic due to its pink feldspar. 💖🏔️

#DidYouKnow CO has diamonds? They formed deep in Earth's mantle and were erupted via kimberlite pipe to the surface. These eruptions were very fast (~6-19 mph), preserving the diamonds' mineral structure. These unique conditions explain why diamonds are very rare on Earth. đź’Ž

The Dotsero Crater is CO's only "active" volcano. Luckily, it's not likely to erupt anytime soon. It last erupted ~4,150 years ago, and most geologists consider a volcano that erupted within the last 10,000 yrs to be active. There have been no recent rumblings at Dotsero! 🌋

Colorado created mining laws for reclamation in the 1960s-70s. Federal laws were put into place in the 1970s-80s to help with land and environmental reclamation, and health & safety protocols.

Colorado has over 850 active permits for sand, gravel, and aggregate-related quarries. Without this new reservoir development and reuse of the pits, there would most likely be more construction of reservoirs farther away from populated centers.

Some say that CO would be perfect if only it had an ocean. We say you’re 66 million yrs too late! ~100-66 Mya, much of what is now western North America was flooded by a shallow sea, called the Western Interior Seaway. K-aged shale and sandstone in CO preserves this. 🌊🌴
