Honestly, I think his motivations are very sweet and noble. I think a lot of people see the hopelessness and evil in the world and think it’s terrible to bring kids into it, but he wanted to raise good kids in spite of everything and hope that they could make the world better.

The TV anime does this too, but being a long-runner (two decades!!!) with a smallish budget, it can never have as much motion and detail as an OVA, movie, short, or seasonal anime.

This reminds me of the friendship between a cow and a leopard in India? The leopard was rather young and kept visiting the coq even as she got older and the cow would gently headbutt her and the leopard would play with her and lie around and cuddle. She would sneak in to visit.
