I believe the truth is in the middle,
Gaia was more than likely told by some shady rep @ GoFundMe etc that the transaction would be going to a fraudulent source and believed it. She then panicked and closed up shop.

Being that the GoFundMe is now open once again, something has transpired.
I don’t see any obvious signs of Mai not being legit. Her posts go back regarding Palestine a few years.
