Retired Radio 4 newsreader/announcer. Loves snow, a good wood stack, The Ionian & pootling in the garden. Can now have opinions. More often on Threads.
And that’s that. I’ve read my last ever news bulletin on
@BBCRadio4
& said a fond farewell to Continuity. What a pleasure & a privilege it’s been. Shall miss my fabulous colleagues hugely but have so many cracking memories to cherish. It’s been a blast. (A bit 😢 right now)
Thank you, thank you for all the lovely messages on here today. So touched. For those asking I’m not joining any other broadcasting establishment or planning a Podcast but I may occasionally read things out loud in the garden to the birds. A sort of reverse

They're a masterclass in how to question a useless politician. The National 'Big Guns' could learn a thing or two. I've been cheering every clip I've heard.
I’ve been reading the Ships on
@BBCRadio4
for nearly 30 years & this is the first time I’ve had a TROPICAL storm. Becoming EXTRA tropical to boot 😳
#BraceYourselfForErnesto
This wretched bunch bang on and on about "Britain" being so marvellous and the envy of the world and in my book the only thing that really is envied is the BBC. They can't stand it. (And yes, I am biased.)
Sobbing into my lunch listening to Adrian Edmondson talking about Rik Mayall on Desert Island Discs. All the plaudits to
@laurenlaverne
- such a good interviewer who knows when to stay quiet & let her guest just "be" until it's the right time to carry on. Incredibly moving.
If Zahawi gets Chancellor he'll have first hand experience of how to cope with energy prices. He got the taxpayer to fund the heating in his stables after all.
#TheyreAllAwful
Very quiet this New Year’s Eve in the prow of The Mothership. Can almost hear the ghostly echo of long ago footsteps on the stone stairwell.
#BroadcastingHouse
What an absolute joy of a series
#sewingbee
has been. Have loved every minute of it. Fabulous final three & Serena a really worthy winner. Wednesday evening telly will be poorer without it.
Loving the tulips I was given on my last day at
@BBCRadio4
. I’m a terrible ‘shove them in a jug with as little fuss as possible’ flower arranger but I think they look gorgeous. Sorbet colours. Just as it said on the label 😊
There are sparkly, glittery specks in the air. I don’t believe in Heaven but I really want there to be a celestial boozer somewhere & the specks are Jeremy & Linda Smith & Peter Donaldson & Simon Hoggart having a right old knees up in it
#JeremyHardy
I’ve just seen the awful, awful news about darling Jeremy H. He was one of life’s joys. I’ve so many happy memories of times spent with him on
#TheNewsQuiz
and in the pub. It’s actually too dreadful to take in. I’m going to the top of the mountain to have a good cry.
Anyway, I've had a watered down Prosecco ( first drink since we left Austria last March) so am a bit tiddly pom but just wanted to say thank you, thank you for all the lovely messages about mine &
@neilsleat
& Diana's departure from The Mothership. They have meant a lot ☺️
The young lad in the house opposite was given a unicycle a few months ago & after a shaky, wobbly start he now zooms up and down the road with impressive balance and a big smile. Today he's showing off his skill while simultaneously enjoying an ice lolly. 👏
Just discovered in the intro to a report on
@ZDFHeute
about shortages in the UK at Christmas that "pigs in blankets" are translated as "sausages in a dressing gown" and frankly the day has improved immeasurably.
#TowellingOrWincyette
The wonderful
@zebsoanes
reads his very last 6 o’clock news on
@bbcradio4
tonight. One of the loveliest people I know - glorious of voice & a joy to have had as a colleague.
@ClassicFM
are in for a treat. Dashing in a DJ but a favourite pic I took is ‘The Handsome Trawlerman’ 😘
Well, that's a first for me. Blocked and reported someone for being thoroughly offensive. Not that it'll bother no pic, lots of numbers, nasty little commentator one bit ... but I feel better 😠
You have been a complete joy
@SusanCalman
& have made this
#Strictly
for me. Shall miss watching you & Kevin but thank you for all the smiles and all the twirls 👏🏻👏🏻 💃🏻🕺🏻😍
#KeepDancing
So that’s it. The house is empty, the van is full & after 29 years it’s time to bid farewell to dear old

. Good job Mr C is driving. I seem to have something in my eye 😪

Didn't think it was possible to be more embarrassed by my MP
@nadhimzahawi
but this morning he's achieved it and I'm pretty sure I can hear Shakespeare spinning in his grave.
Good morning, Twitter. The news from
#Stratters
is that it's very windy which will make for a bracing, hair raising post retirement stroll along the river later. Before then I'm reading all your wonderful messages & there are so many my constitutional may well be after dark! 😊
Stop starting every reply to a question with the word"so". Just stop it. Actually just stop talking and go away.
#ShoutingAtTheRadio
The lovely
@MishalHusain
meanwhile is magnificent to listen to.
First heart stopping anxiety dream of retirement last night involving a shopping trip to Libertys (those were the days) & a glance at my watch to see I have 2 minutes to make it back to BH for the midday summary. 😱
Not usually a fan of Vox Pops but cheered loudly at the lady who said "unless you want a lot of swearing I'd move the mic away" on
#NewsAtTen
when she was asked about the PM & the No 10 party.
For the first time in goodness knows how many years I'm not reading the Midnight News on
@bbcradio4
on NYE so I'm having an early night! I think lovely
@vijialles
will be waiting patiently for the Bongs to finish tonight. Happy New Year everyone.
What a great quote about
#margaritapracatan
from the late Clive James in my 13.00 news on
@bbcradio4
- "She never lets the words or melody get in her way. She is us, without the fear of failure."
I love
@TheMontyDon
‘s implements - his scoops and teeny shovels, labels and seed trays, his well worn work benches and glorious pots of all shapes and sizes. Could watch him patting down the compost for hours 😊
#GardenersWorld
Mr C is really the cook in our house but we do have a tradition that I make the trifle. Or as I like to call it “a bowl of sherry infused custard and cream”. 👍🏻
#NoJellyEver
This has made my day. THE James Burke is in the studio next to
@BBCRadio4
Con recording a trail for his Moon prog later this month. Thank you producer
@jacksoper
for letting me barge in & take a pic 😊

Why do they have to have a new lectern? What a waste of money and wood. Although when the power cuts hit I suppose they can always burn the previous one to keep warm.
So used to binge watching box sets these days it's quite a struggle to wait 7 days for the next episode of the brilliant
#Unforgotten
but worth it. A really excellent series.
Television Centre is 60 today. I took a few pics before we left in 2012 & stuck them on Flickr. There are a few of some much missed colleagues here too.
The only teeny positive I'm clinging on to from the behaviour of this ghastly, unedifying shower in power is that we are witnessing a Party in its death throes and it will then be silent forever. That moment can't come soon enough.
Back in the BH Bunker tonight to read the last news summary of 2018 on
@bbcradio4
and the first of 2019. It's a New Year tradition 😊 (Then I'm orf to the mountains. Another NY tradition 👍)
Breakfast telly, Nationwide, Grandstand .... and this cracking cameo on "Morecambe and Wise". Frank Bough was very much part of the broadcasting landscape of my youth.
The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show 1977. Their final BBC show before leaving for Thames, it contained several gems, including this one (Eric was convinced the sequence wouldn't work, only changing his mind when he saw how slickly it had been edited together).
Apparently today is my Twitter anniversary. 10 bloomin years I’ve been tweeting twaddle but 10 years too of reading some great posts and coming into contact with some really lovely people. So in honour of the early Twitter days, here’s a cat pic 😊
Treat of the day - an hour long phone catch up with the legend that is Brian Perkins. Sounding as gorgeous as ever and still chortling in his mischievous way at life's absurdities. Love him.
About to set sail from Dover to Calais. Seems remarkably calm on the weather front this morning which is a mighty relief. Mountains here we come. The two years wait has felt like an eternity.

I know we need to build more houses but why do the developers of a new estate have to rip up a beautiful hedge all along the field they've acquired and cut down at least 8 lovely Silver Birch trees. I have returned from my walk in a very bad mood 😠
Not a flake has fallen since we arrived at the Heidi Hideaway 2 weeks ago. But this morning I’ve woken up to a winter wonderland & feel as giddy & excited as a 6 year old 😊

Farewell Luke Tuddenham. A smashing colleague at
@BBCRadio4
who just read his last news bulletin. He won't be joining us just yet in the "Twilight Home For Retired Announcers" as he's too young but hope all his new adventures are fabulous. Frohe Reisen, wenn du kannst x
Mr C has just strolled into the sitting room strumming Edelweiss on his guitar and I'm now a snivelling wreck (not because of his playing. That was actually rather good). Auf Wiedersehen
#ChristopherPlummer
😔💔
Gawd, she's so robotic. Trots out the same phrases in exactly the same tone with identical hand gestures. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful....and I'm sick to the back teeth of the word "deliver".
Long old day in London (dearth of Chuggers meant much wandering around W1 after an afternoon visit to the dentist). Walked past BH for first time since retiring & surprisingly didn’t feel sad or too nostalgic. Did however feel bloody FREEZING.
He's so slippery, so untrustworthy, so self centred, I won't believe he's gone until he's actually physically out of the building and another PM is in place. Why wait until the Autumn?
Lovely, lovely
@zebsoanes
talking to equally lovely
@bbcpaddy
on
#BBCBH
about his stroke and his recovery. So good to hear him sounding as eloquent, wise and witty as ever.
My lovely colleague Tom Sanders has compiled a book of tear inducing, funny and wonderful memories as a leaving present. This one sums up what has made the last 30 odd years so brilliant. Mr Hay, I will miss you too x
As the media gets the blame again from the PM, this time for the disastrous Tory loss in North Shropshire, I hope the media remembers when he comes looking for a job in their sector in the future.
Think this might be the pinnacle of my career. I’m mentioned in the brilliant
@ellygriffiths
new Ruth Galloway novel, The Lantern Men. Nearly dropped my iPad when I reached this bit. What an honour. Very flattered 😊
Oh, what a lovely, perfect farewell. This glorious comedy has been such a joyous gem, much needed when quite a lot of other things at the moment are so grim. It’ll be really missed.

Just caught up with final of

as was
#chilternchugging
home from work last night & missed it in real time. I'm having a right old blub. Such lovely, comforting telly. They were all so wonderful, Clare a worthy winner & that shot of her in her PPE ...*blows nose loudly*
Things I will never, ever understand. Deliberately lighting a fire on tinderbox dry land in this heatwave & leaving your dog locked in a car with no window open. Both make the news & both make me as hot under the collar as the weather 😡
