Massive congratulations to all teachers who have managed to, with no notice, deliver education this week. If any GCSE or A level PE teachers would like me to deliver a Zoom sport nutrition q&a to help keep learning interesting please drop me a message. If I can help I will.
I'm being asked so much about The Game Changers on Netflix. I can't help think about this paper. Hint. Please read at least the abstract and Not just the title.
Great that it’s not an unpaid intern but breaks my heart that this is a salary for someone with experience as a head of sport science. I love my profession but where is it going.
You really should take this down
@thismorning
. Surely you have s responsibility to the public. I understand you may not at the time have known this was incorrect but surely by now you have had time to fact check this. Do the right thing.
Really happy with this one. Worth a read if interested in exercise induced muscle damage and the nutritional solutions.
Great collaborative effort with
@dan_owie
@JamesNCobley
@GlynHowatson
Really interesting nutrition about team sky nutrition. 1.3kg carbs in a single day. So much for Froome being a low carb athlete!! Almost 19g per kg!!
Chris Froome: Team Sky's unprecedented release of data reveals how British rider won Giro d'Italia -
Perhaps the most ridiculous tweet I have ever read. Ever. Is it any wonder has such a bad reputation by professionals. And I actually like a lot of cross fit but this is insane.
✅ If it has a food label on it, it is not food. You do not see that on the chicken. It is not on the tomatoes. But it is on the chips and cookies.
✅ If it is not perishable, if it says “Best if used before 2019,” it is not food.
Just been told I cant watch my daughter at sports day (outdoors on a large field) but tens of thousands can watch the football travelling round Europe. If anyone can make sense of this anymore please explain it to me. I'm official lost.
Congratulations to my partner in crime. The less good looking of the Mitchell brothers. Proud to introduce my good friend and colleague PROFESSOR
@JamesyMorton
James Morton.
If any rugby club would like a free nutrition seminar I will come and deliver one in return for donation to Rob and his family. Will also offer one on one consultations for anyone at the end of the seminar again for free.
👏Huge thank you to everyone for your incredible generosity for Rob and his family, we have already raised £1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ please keep giving and spread the word to all you know
Here is how you can support Rob and his family of 3 young children under 8

Delighted to be asked to deliver a TEDx talk on sport nutrition. Just need to think of the perfect topic. So many options but this has to be spot on as it’s TEDx. Any suggestions?
Well after 9 years and 3 world cups its time to hand on the greatest job in sport nutrition. It's been an absolute honour to work for England Rugby and I've had memories to last a lifetime. But all good things must come to an end.
Seeing multiple world records being set at the Olympics, and no real drops in performance is anyone else in my world wondering why the reduced training over last 2 years has had no effects? Are we over training routinely? Can we train smarter in non covid times?
Questions
1. What is the most over rated nutrition supplement.
2. What is the most under rated nutrition supement.
I'll go first.
1. All fat burners over rated
2. Creatine under rated
Absolutely clueless article. My students have had online lessons, tutorials, guest speakers from industry and my standard working day is now much longer to give students the best experience and education possible. Perhaps you need to do some research before writing this nonsense
I'm sure ive read on here people claiming Chris froome and sky are on keto diets. 19g/kg carb on some days. The highest I have ever heard of in any sport. Anyone still thinking endurance in elite sport does not need carbs?
My lads football game was ruined (10 years old) today because spectators (parents etc) thought they were watching premier League and inappropriate shouting. Was embarrassed to stand there. Was right call to abandon it. Let the kids play. If you must shout - encourage.
Question for my academic friends. Does anyone understand why every journal has their own reference style. This must waste so many hours of academics time formatting references - time that surely could and should be spent better?
Open access link to our recent paper on the prevalence of CBD use in rugby . Now its time to research the safety and anecdotal claims. This is not going away soon therefore research is essential.
Still think you can plan training around the menstrual cycle based on mean data? Then think again.
Amazing meta analysis from
@ElliottSale
and colleagues.
A must read paper for everyone
This is one of many reasons I don't like to give slides before the lecture. I have discussed this with my
@LJMUNutrition
MSc students. Kills my teaching style and evidence it is detrimental to learning. Just because students ask for them does not mean we must give them.
Tomorrow first lecture, new students
@PPW_KULeuven
. My first slides are ready. (A couple of new ones this year!)

Providing PowerPoint Slides prior to class has an adverse impact on performance of students.
Huge day. Congratulations to the pup
@James_Morehen
on a successful defence of his thesis. We did it pal. Been a pleasure. You have done your old man proud.
Been thinking lots today about the unacceptable harassment of women and wondered what I can do. I've got it down to 3 immediate actions.
1. Challenge unacceptable behaviour and intervene if needed
2. Modify my own behaviour (cross the road if dark etc)
3. Educate my kids well
Today we recorded the first of the series "An interview with Graeme". This is a series where I interview an
@LJMUSportSci
expert . This week, exercise immunology with
@ProfNeilWalsh
. I am sure you will really enjoy this and learn loads, I did!
Great that our CBD prevalence use in pro rugby is OPEN ACCESS. Such an exciting area of research.
Appreciate a few RT on this please and let me know what you think?
Huge congratulations to Dr
@MattTaberner
on an amazing defence of his thesis. Matt's work has had a huge influence already. Been a pleasure to supervise you pal.
Surely it's now time that to have a social media account you need to register with official ID and then be accountable for the hatred being spread. Would love to see some of these clowns being prosecuted or loosing their jobs for their abuse. Too many lives destroyed.
I'm beginning to think sport nutrition gets an unfair level of abuse when it comes to supps. Yes there is a lot of snake oil but there are also lots with proven evidence. Whilst I have championed "food first" and always will its important to stress its not "food only". Discuss?
34 followers to hit the 20K mark. I'm very grateful for everyone who has followed this bald wiganer sharing some sport nutrition/ sport science stuff. If you have anything specific you'd like my thoughts on, or ever want a PDF of our papers please feel free ask. Thank you!!!
Need to give huge thanks to
@WHHNHS
for looking after my little angel over last 2 days. Especially nurse Cheryl who was an absolute star and made feebs feel so much better - Cherry the teddy helped loads!! Radius and Ulna now recovering. Thank you!!
I've said it before and I mean it. Myself or one of my colleagues will offer advice to anyone who needs it. Please do not take supplements without speaking to someone first who is qualified to give advice
@SENregister
This week we learned that an organic vegan multi vitamin was allegedly contaminated with a SARM. This is why we must insist all supplements, no matter how "clean" and "organic" they may look must be independently batch tested for contamination.
Great to finally get started on the CBD cell work with
@dan_owie
for
@GillhamScott
PhD work. Huge thanks to
@Naturecanltd
for funding this research. Time to find out what CBD is all about. Its been a long time since I have been so excited about a research project.
'Food First' sport nutrition. Performance goals can still be achieved with some creative food choices without reverting straight away to specific sports foods / supplements.

delivered to another brilliant high school tonight. At times I regret agreeing to do 50 but the second the great questions from the school kids come its totally worthwhile. 20 to go.
When I retired from playing rugby I never thought I'd hear those dam bleeps again (at least with me running to them). 20 years later im doing it again. I must be mad.
The fastest moving area of sport nutrition research I've ever been involved in. Here are my current thoughts.
CANNABIDIOL (CBD) AND THE ATHLETE: CLAIMS, EVIDENCE, PREVALENCE AND SAFETY CONCERNS
GROWING, BUILDING & REPAIRING ELITE RUGBY PLAYERS: Nutritional & Energetic Considerations.
239 pro rugby players, 5 different clubs, 4 studies.
Massive thank you to all those involved at
@LJMUNutrition
, to the players & staff at
@wolvesrl
&
@WidnesRL
throughout the PhD
Worth a read in line with my concerns regarding the advice that training fed negates the benefits of exercise for fat loss. Apologies but calories still count in 2019 (paper from
@BradSchoenfeld
)
No academics who have researched genes and exercise believe their data are ready for commercialisation. However - many companies try to do this and cite the researchers papers to justify their tests.

Congratulations to Professor Graeme L. Close FBASES
@close_nutrition
who has won the BASES Applied Practitioner Award. Grame will feature in the Summer issue of The Sport and Exercise Scientist.
#congratulations
#BASESaward
Appetite control fascinates me. Surely this is the key to weight management. An old but fascinating paper showing decreased energy intake just by increasing protein. The flip side to this. How many athletes don't eat enough Cal's to gain lean because feel so full from protein?
Delighted to wake up to this email today. The team
@LJMUNutrition
are really happy with this one. Hopefully a useful guide for practitioners translating research to applied practice.
Metabolism practical in one lab and england rugby using the next one here at
@LJMU
Another reason to join us this September to study for your masters in sport nutrition.
@LJMUNutrition
Open access special edition of ijsnem on supplements
Please read, please share and please let me know what you think of the articles. This is a game changing issue in terms of IOC stance on supplements - for the better.
No matter how many papers I publish I wonder will the wait for reviews ever get less frustrating? Got a few under review, one of them coming up to 5 months. The system is broken and its just not fair on authors making them wait so long. The solution has to be to pay reviewers
2 versions of the same paper, one as a scientific review and the other aimed at the end user. Both articles are thanks to GSSI who are leading the way in sport science education and dissemination. The Paper-2-Podium matrix
Best of luck
@James_Morehen
in your first 6 nations. You will love it and do an awesome job! Lots of people are very proud of you pal including one very special person who always said you'd get this one!!! Enjoy the ride pup!
Given the growing amount of childhood obesity, should council run leisure centres do better than this when it comes to post exercise food for kids? Surely if anywhere should be promoting healthy options it's here. Place stinks of chip fat. Or am I wrong?
Decided to walk through London rather than get the tube. You forget how amazing this city is. Most of time all I see are underground tunnels. Get your head up and appreciate what you have around you.
Well done
@JamesHudson5
- your first PhD paper is now on PubMed . Not many could have collected these data pal which has given some fascinating insights
Favourite memory of the last few weeks was trying to catch the lads spiral bombs at the end of training. Success rate not high but great fun trying. And yes I ended up on my arse a few times trying to land them!!! 🤣🤣🤣
@wendy_bickmore
Until we start paying reviewers we will always get this problem. Perhaps academics are finally realising that we have to focus on jobs we are paid to do rather than helping publishers make huge profits on us.
The more I read that this sub 2 hour marathon is "the last great barrier smashed" the more I cant agree. Surely it's only "smashed" when it's been achieved within the rules of the sport? Great achievement for sure but for me a genuine 2 hour marathon has still not been achieved.
