Wrote about one of the greatest rock albums, one of the greatest indie albums, one of the greatest pivot-to-ugliness albums, one of the greatest albums recorded by Steve Albini, one of the greatest Ohio albums, one of the greatest albums in general
This week's column is on one of my favorite new pop stars, Camila Cabello, who has become such a big deal that I sometimes forget she used to be in Fifth Harmony
I know I am "bias" as the stans say, but culture criticism is a creative discipline in its own right and at its best it has set my soul on fire as often as any other artform
I've probably listened to the new
@vampireweekend
album 50+ times straight through and am obsessed with it so here's my "Premature Evaluation" aka deeply considered dissertation
I only play 'Loveless' by myself in the car because no one else in my life appreciates the need to listen to MBV at unhealthy volumes. Relatedly I am currently alone and there is snow on the ground and it's after dark so you already know what it is.
After eight (8) years, just pushed publish on my final The Week In Pop, a list of my favorite pop songs of 2021. It is a good list. It has been, I think, a good run.
Starting in January,
@RachelBrods
will be taking over the column. I'm stoked!
Any time a writer not from Ohio writes "Columbus, Ohio" instead of just "Columbus," a little part of me dies. Columbus is one of the biggest cities in America! The other towns called Columbus are tiny! How many people are honestly going to see "Columbus" and wonder which one?
The first football team I ever followed was '95 Ohio State. Eddie George would later win the Heisman, but no one made my eyes pop like Terry Glenn. So many highlights. Watching him blow by the Notre Dame secondary was one of that season's great thrills. R.I.P.
I didn't get to write about this album, but it turns 20 this Saturday, and it's sooooooooo good. Listened over the weekend and couldn't believe how well it held up. The power chord riff at the end of "The Monkey's Back" is especially sick. Menomena!
James has always kept the ship running and helped us keep our heads on straight. He did so many little things behind the scenes that made Stereogum better. As a critic, he had a crucial role in breaking some of the greatest indie bands of the past decade. A music blogging legend.
hello, some news: it's my last day at stereogum 💫
after 10 years, i am getting out of the music blog game. going to grad school to try something new and maybe even "write a novel" ....

I’ve seen Wilco maybe 12, 13, 14 times (I’ve lost count), at theaters and clubs and amphitheaters and fests, and they have NEVER sounded as good as they do tonight in Columbus. I mean, goddamn.
Just listened to a rap song from a random promo email because it was called "Hot Hot Heat." I guess what I'm saying is, all you aspiring MCs out there, send me songs called "French Kicks" or "The Futureheads" and I will click.
The brilliant debut from Chicago teens Horsegirl is so steeped in classic indie rock sounds that it sometimes feels like it's pandering directly to me, but their passion and talent are so obvious that this stuff can't be written off as "borrowed nostalgia"
