Its my bday (43) and since last years vanity post about my transformation I've had lots of messages asking about tips to get in shape. As New Years is when people get healthy, for my bday this year I figured I'd share some things I've learned that may help some of you get going.
I'm 42 today, and at the risk of seeming like a vain douche, I am proud of the transformation I have managed to make in myself over the last year and a half.
Its an amazing thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself.
39 (245 lb) vs 42 (195 lb)
From someone who has studied this field for over 2 decades, I can comfortably say that virtually everything said here is inaccurate. It is incredibly disturbing to me that someone claiming to be a scientist can talk with such authority on something they clearly know nothing about
@hubermanlab
How could I be confident that you would allow our discussion to be aired unedited? You would have complete control over what is displayed publicly after the fact, which could definitely influence the interpretation of any discussion we had.
They’re here! My wonderful Wingspan Team! I waved wildly from the window.
They give me wings! YOU give me wings!! Thanks to your generosity we have raised 350K for the Nadia Chaudhri Wingspan Award!
This $ will be endowed to create graduate fellowships in perpetuity.
@hubermanlab
Just a few points:
CBD and THC are not interchangeable. CBD does not bind CB1, it’s pharmacology is largely a mystery.
THC does not trigger retrograde signaling, that’s endocannabinoids. THC binds to the same receptor as endocannabinoids.
This has actually happened and is now out.
A few things.
First, don’t expect fireworks here, this is a very science focused episode not a brawl between
@hubermanlab
and myself. This was an opportunity to utilize his platform to accurately convey the state of cannabis science.
@hubermanlab
Holy fucking shit, it is actually disturbing how inaccurate the overwhelming majority of what is said here is. Like I have to believe that you have legitimately just made this stuff up. There is literally no research that has ever been done that could be cited to support this.
Heres a crux am curious what people think. I have been openly critical of his approach to sci comm and so do not want to legitimize his podcast or him, but also having the opportunity on his platform to go through the problems with what he has said is the only way to correct it.
@canna_brain
Would you like to come discuss your stance on cannabis research and use etc. We include references and I consult/ed with colleagues here at Stanford Med and elsewhere prior to this and other episodes but given your post, I would love to have a discussion for people to learn from
@hubermanlab
There are virtually none, if any, studies that have ever compared sativa and indica strains in any way as he describes here. Virtually all work done with cannabis is only with a strain provided by NIDA. It’s bizarre to me that he talks about this as if there is a wealth of work.
@hubermanlab
As someone who has focused on cannabinoid regulation of the amygdala for the better part of the last 15 years, part of me died inside as I listened to this knowing that this is now the narrative that so many people will believe because who it has come from.
@hubermanlab
The field generally agrees that there is more variance within sativas and indicas then there is between them. Sure differences in strains likely do exist but this does not relate to sativa or indica. Plus there is actually no research on this as he suggests. It doesn’t exist.
@hubermanlab

So for those of you interested in what it was that I took issue with in Hubermans first cannabis podcast, this is the Coles notes of the errors/inaccuracies that I noted. A lot of this is covered in the new episode, but some wont make it through and for others this is the TLDR
@Kevin_McKernan
I've said that before, because his podcast on cannabis from a while back was also filled with inaccuracies and I was like oh if he is this wrong about something I know I can only assume he talks out of his ass with everything. My dopamine colleagues have verified this belief.
Ok because there are several new people on here, and everyone seems to have opinions about my credibility and motivations, I am just going to provide some context for the newbies here so that I don’t have to address questions in the comments or more ridiculous trolling.

@hubermanlab
To be clear, this would be to discuss the current, and your former, podcast on cannabis to explain where the issues with what you have said are.
We lost a legend today, as my PDF mentor Bruce McEwen passed away. A wonderful scientist, human and mentor. I am privileged to have known and trained with him.
The family has requested their privacy at this time, so please refrain from contacting them directly while they grieve.
@j_n_foster
THC is a partial agonist at CB1 receptors. It just activates the receptor outright, it doesn't need to do anything retrograde. Retrograde signaling is post-synaptic production of endocannabinoids that traverse back across the synapse to the axon to activate CB1 receptors.
Also, as a general note. I am a salty bastard on this app, and just because I swear and make jokes doesn’t make me stupid, the same way using the phrase “ad hominem” doesn’t make you smart. Don’t ever assume someone’s intelligence level by how they behave on social media.
Postdoctoral fellows in the field of 'Neuroscience of Mental Health and Addiction' missing out presenting your work at conferences? A group of us have decided to set up a new virtual seminar series that will run over summer. See details below and apply by May 31 to be considered!

@hubermanlab
He just can't help himself. The rush of wildly extrapolating tidbits of knowledge and creating convincing sounding arguments out of sheer bullshit and whimsy creates a dopamine rush unlike anything, even compared to having 6 consecutive partners.
I worked with
@vicecanada
to make a video where I explain how cannabis effects the brain and what the endocannabinoid system is, in general terms. And I don't wear plaid.
My lab is looking to hire a postdoc to work on amygdala and stress projects, with a focus on endocannabinoids.
This project would incorporate a range of techniques/approaches and my lab is nested in a great research environment.

I am not an “advocate” for cannabis, I am an advocate for science. Just because I shit on crappy sci comm that misrepresents cannabis, doesn’t mean I am saying cannabis is a harmless substance. I am fully aware of, and educate people, about the risks and harms of cannabis.
I have published over 150 scientific articles relating to endocannabinoids or cannabis effects on the brain with a particular emphasis on stress, anxiety and feeding. If you’re curious about my work you can check it out here:
Excited to have been a part of this fascinating case report of a woman who appears to have a genetic partial loss of function of FAAH, with elevated anandamide, resulting in an insensitivity to pain and an absence of anxiety

@OrshaMagyar
and I started dating, married on May 19, 2006.
We have been through a lot—grad school, 3 yrs long distance, wins and losses, highs and lows, career growths and pivots. Its been a rollercoaster, but the ride of my life. 💕 💑
Heads up for cool virtual sci comm event this Wednesday!
@OrshaMagyar
will host neuroscientist
@LiisaGalea
as she gives the low down, and answers your most burning questions, on sex differences in the brain and sex and gender bias in research. Details 👇
I am a neuroscientist who has been studying the biology of the endocannabinoid system (the system that molecules from cannabis interact with to influence the brain and body) for about 24 years now. My training was at
@UBC
(PhD) and
@RockefellerUniv
(postdoc).
@larastwitta
It’s insanely frustrating, especially if you ever try to talk neuroscience with the general public. All you end up doing is answering questions about how what he said in his podcast about X topic was wrong because of…..
FYI GRC chairs, while the GRC was not mandating it themselves,
@SachinPatelLab
and I pushed and the Cannabinoid GRC will now require proof of vaccination to attend.
We all want to get back to meetings, but let’s make sure we do it safely and properly.
@DrJenGunter
This is exactly my concern but I worry that if the point is to try and reach his audience and correct the record publicly that it would miss the mark if not in his turf.
@hubermanlab
Ok this is a blanket response with a link to a general search engine that routes me to 5 possible cannabis related topics and I do not have the time or energy to search this to see what you claim are your references. If they are so accessible please just post them here to see.
@Joansallen
@Kevin_McKernan
That most of what he says is a wild over exaggeration of where the research is actually at and very little of what he described is true and much of it couldn't even be studied in the way in which he describes it.
Very excited that this collaborative paper with
@Heilig_Lab
and the amazing
@MayoOnTheBrain
is finally out. Its a big one too! The first demonstration that pharmacological inhibition of FAAH in humans dampens stress responses and augments fear extinction
I also run a lab, manage multiple grants, supervise 7 grad students/postdocs, am a reviewing editor for

The one piece of advice I have - find someone you can laugh with, it makes the good times better and the bad times bearable. 💞
@hubermanlab
Also because I value the importance of the official record, I will be posting a summary of the points of contention I had from the previous podcast just so that people are able to understand what it was I took issue with and why I went on the show.
Happy 56th birthday THC.
While unlikely the source of the 4/20 mythology, on this date in 1964 Raphael Mechoulam published that isolated THC was the active constituent from hasish and thus the world of Cannabinoid research was born.

@ccictweeter
so despite some opinions, it’s safe to say I do have some authority to speak on cannabis and the neuroscience of cannabinoids.
I do not profit from the cannabis industry. All of my funding comes from the Canadian, and a small part from US, federal government as well as some smaller foundations focused on neurological or psychiatric disease. And I don’t receive any personal money from “big cannabis”.
Very excited to see this cannabis documentary come out on Wednesday on PBS NOVA with many of us cannabinoid researchers like
@HurdLab
@zivacooper
and
@drstacigruber
amongst others.

I followed the advice many gave me, which was to not engage aggressively and rudely as I had done on twitter, as that would turn a lot of people off, but to have an amicable and professional conversation about cannabis science, and so that’s what you can expect here.
@shdeen
Fair, maybe I do seem petty calling him names, but you also have to understand how insanely tiring it is to go out and try and talk neuroscience to the public and 90% of the time you spend is correcting people who quote his podcast and the random shit he seems to make up.
Better late then never! I promised Bruce I would get the paper done--and 7 years after finishing data collection, the paper from my PDF research came out online today.
Early life stress modulates the developmental trajectory of the endocannabinoid system
I am really struggling to understand the market for this.
I feel like people who like to eat tide pods and Scotch enthusiasts are largely non-overlapping groups.
I have an opening for a PostDoc in my lab, but due to the nature of the award I have for salary support, the start date can be no later than mid-to-late 2019. If you are interested in joining our group please send me an email with your CV and research interests. Please RT!
Overall, I think it was good of
@hubermanlab
to bring me on to provide my perspective and allow me to present the science of this space, especially given that my twitter takes were egregious and sweary. I encourage him to be more conscientious in future when discussing science.

Alex, honestly just stop this. Multiple credible scientists have spoken out to media about you, why are you doing this. I cant believe you would be so petty to go after
@zivacooper
in a blind tweet like this. Now you’re getting another rant.
1/ Let's talk about the National Academy of Medicine report. "Cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses." So the 16-member NAM committee found in 2017. A week ago, one member dissociated herself from those findings.

Congrats to Gavin Petrie for successfully defending his PhD today!! Despite running my lab for almost 12 years now, he is only the 2nd PhD I’ve graduated. Sad to see him leave but excited to see what he’ll do next in his post doc with
@MayoOnTheBrain
Today was my grandmas 89th birthday. Unfortunately she hurt her back so had to spend it in hospital, but since I was in TO was able to make the trip out to Hamilton to take my 90 year old grandpa to visit her. They have been married for 67 years. SIXTY SEVEN YEARS!!!
A scientific first for me: getting to be a proud academic parent see their former trainee flourish in their own academic lab.
Maria Morena was an amazing postdoc who is now faculty at Sapienza university in Rome and I finally got a chance to visit her and see her in action 😊
I found the 1st photo

25 years changes a lot, but the love is always there.
Happy Valentines Day 💕
@BarneysRubble0
I actually don’t trash him interviewing other scientists and think that’s a good use of the platform. It’s his free wheeling of neuroscience that’s a problem because a lot of what he says is inaccurate and ultimately contributes to credibility issues with science.
So sad to hear, the field has lost a legend and patriarch.
Raphe first published the isolation and characterization of THC on April 20, 1964.
His lab also discovered endocannabinoids: anandamide in 1990 and 2-AG in 1995.
His impact is profound and he will be greatly missed.
An interesting theme emerging from
#ICRS2022
is that its becoming increasingly clear that CBD is not some anti-THC molecule that reliably counters the adverse effects of THC in humans. For most outcomes it seems to do virtually nothing and surprisingly it may even worsen some.
Excited to share a new Hill lab paper on how genetic variance in FAAH, the enzyme that metabolizes the endocannabinoid anandamide, can influence feeding responses to orexigenic and anorectic signals, that just came out in
@eLife
So, with
@haleyv
defending her PhD yesterday it is the end of an era in the Hill lab. Anyone who knows my lab, knows that Haley has been an integral part of its build up and whatever success we have had to date. But I wanted to use this thread to give a farewell send off to Haley

Hey
@AlexBerenson
, scientist here who has worked in this field for over 15 years. I would love to talk about the "facts" you speak of about cannabis & mental health because its very complicated and your op-eds, and I can only assume your upcoming book, trivialize this complexity.
Hi Tom! Afraid to include me in the conversation, I see. Or to discuss the dangers advocates like you have been ignoring for far, far too long. I'm just the messenger. The facts are the problem.
While I would love to have a conversation with
@hubermanlab
about science communication and my issues with his approach, that was not the point here. I am happy to do that at a later date. Whether or not that happens ever will be up to him.
Honored to be included with long time friends
