A Rant: I am getting so tired of my grants being rejected because I don't study males. The WHOLE point of
#SABV
#SGBA
is because we didn't know enough about how things work in females...now we can only study females if we study them with males? 1/
A beautiful piece about a beautiful person.
@DrNadiaChaudhri
is the best of us. Her legacy I hope will inspire other universities/societies to offer awards to international students. We desperately need to hear their voices & give life to their science. Diversity breeds discovery
In an effort to save trees: I have moved from printing off a million articles that sit in piles on my desk unread, to a system where I leave a million tabs open in my browser until my computer can't take it anymore, snaps, & restarts wiping clean the papers I was to read

I have reached a new pandemic low. I just screamed at/ accused my spouse “ WHERE ARE MY GOOD SWEATPANTS???” There is a lot to unpack in that one scream.

Devastated to report that my mentor & friend Bruce McEwen has passed away. He was the best of us: a fantastic scientist, super collaborator with encyclopedia-like knowledge of hormones & the brain
Special issue in FIN (2018) as an ode to Bruce & his work: .
I am a staunch advocate for women's health research. Our work and others indicate that very few neuroscience papers are published either using females or analysing for possible differences (~3%-4%)
Last night my son told me I had a Wikipedia page. 🤯 Hats off to the amazing
@jesswade
who has created many Wikipedia pages to advance diversity representation in science.
CIHR: Not only do women ask for less $ but they disproportionally receive less $ /grant - ie there is a 10% reduction in women but only a 1% reduction in the ratio between request: receive meaning 10X greater reduction in budgets from women then men. what does this mean? 1/
Our newest publication is out! We surveyed >3000 journal articles in 2009 & 2019 to determine whether & how possible sex differences were investigated. Given the attention on

My lab knows how to celebrate! Honestly they mean the world to me. They are able to bring a very big smile on my face pretty much every day. And yes I did wear the tiara all day (& Wonder Woman has purple hair streaks ❤️)

First day on site in the new office.. a rainy Vancouver day to make me feel at home. With chocolate gifts, new plants, a welcoming cat sticker, a purple lanyard & amazing people ❤️
Pleased to share our newest paper with first author Shunya Yagi (twitterless) on Sex Differences in Adult Neurogenesis in the Hippocampus & let me just say this was one of those papers that took a while...but I believe packs a punch

Still excited by acceptances, data and funding.
OK back to nursing my very bad cold with sleep and some tea.
Accepted! After 159 publications it still excites me - details on cool* findings from two papers with gifs coming soon
*cool according to Liisa's definition
As read in a paper today " no previous work has shown detectable sex differences in adult hippocampal neurogenesis..." Could the authors please see a non-exhaustive list: PMID: 10199627, 12763590, 18353559, 28580124, 23219473, 10407020, 25304865, 24846617, review 30214058 +++

take a moment to celebrate the scientific achievements of women+ & all those studying women's health. It's a difficult field for a number of reasons including funding opportunities (& constantly being told to add a certain comparator group😏) I 🥳 you!
Women's health, female health is much more than how we differ from males or men! It's how experiences change our physiology, perceptions, epigenetics & many female experiences are female specific ( i.e. contraceptives (IUD, OCs +, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause) 2/
Hormonal contraceptives' are one of the most widely prescribed drugs but yet little is know about how these affect the brain...how can this be after 70 years??? 🤔 For too long women+ health has been ignored....it's way over time to change that narrative!
It was an absolute honour to work alongside
@TronsonLab
and
@ismail_nafissa
as guest editors on this very important Special Issue on Hormonal Contraceptives (HC) and the Brain 🧠 published in Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology. 🧵
Excited to share news of my (first ever) CFI funding - that will go to much needed equipment for my lab! I am beyond appreciative & can’t wait to dive into the studies we are planning. Many thanks to the reviewers (I plan to pull out those comments on those dark days).
I was just about to tweet this yesterday.
@CIHR_IRSC
you can’t possibly review <2000 project grants that PIs spent months preparing but you can review 2000+ COVID19 grants that PIs have spent 1 week preparing??? 🤨😡
Happy to report I will be a representative for PIs at the CIHR Strategic Plan Consensus Workshop in September. Let's hope we can make a difference and make CIHR great again ;)
Women’s health research is undervalued, understudied & underfunded. As a result there are delays in diagnosis, greater side effects + I am all for having allies in getting the message out that women’s health matters. But… these seems..off
Monday, the House of Commons Health committee will launch a study on "Women's health".

Heading to Ottawa to stand before the House of Commons Standing Committee for Health as a witness for Women’s Mental Health. I’m excited to get a chance to talk about the need for more research. Please wish me good travel luck so I make it on time✈️🚕 😬
Our beloved Bella Luna passed over the 🌈 bridge this morning. We are all 💔 Now who will help me write grants, edit papers, & watch TV? She loved to crawl into your lap at the end of the work day (or during it). She purred & slept like a champion.
So much happening for me today personally - Kid1's 24th birthday, an interview for an internal job & CIHR Notice of Decision with my grant sitting at 11.11th percentile...I *think* I can celebrate but 2020 you are so unpredictable I will wait until the NOD.

After almost 2 years the inevitable happened. 4 d after probable exposure with throat swab. It’s still important to mask up & get vaccinated no matter what the regulations. At home we are thankful to all be triple vaxxed. Let’s get the rest of the 🌏🌍🌎 3x vaxxed too.
My mom (Hiie Galea 1938-2014) would have been 81 today. Instead a cocktail of endometrial cancer & a neurodegenerative disorder took her far too early. I miss her everyday. Cherish your loved ones & make time for them (sometimes work has to be ignored)
Does it matter who played with Barbie’s & who didn’t? If you have children or not? If you are a stay at home mom or not? If you use pink to represent females on your graph?
What matters is access to human rights, removing glass barriers, & improving women’s health research.
But let's keep in mind that for women's health you don't need to compare to men. Female health is not just how we are different from males! How female unique experience shape female health is important to study &

2019 was filled with highs & lows. Unfortunately, it started on a high & is ending on a low. Hoping for better news in 2020 (incl funding for the lab) but mostly I wish for good health news for my family (& yours).
My baby is 21! She (& her brother) are the ❤️of my life. Yes I love 🧠 science & hormones but family is truly the best. she keeps me (or tries to) current with the younger generation 🙄. + she’s inherited my love of cookie dough, binge watching TV, Jane Austen, travel, & shopping

Studying one sex, particularly females, I would argue is exactly what will drive forward knowledge on women's health & reduce disparities in our knowledge of what matters to women's health. Why do I think that? let me tell you.../5

Taylor Swift’s song 22 is playing on repeat in our house. Why? Tallinn is 22! She’s one of the smartest people I know, always knows how to put me in my place, schools me on many subjects & gave me the courage & the inspiration for my purple hair + an excuse to prolong my vacay ❤️
Unpopular opinion(?): I dislike virtual conferences. Certainly events that go on all day are not (IMO) conducive within the WFH environment. Or Maybe I just get more distracted then my fellow academics.
Frankly for women's health: menopause matters, OC use matters, parity matters & for these issues we need to study females only. We need funders, policy makers, & reviewers to understand & support more funding for women's health specific questions so we can close that gap /14
I don't know who needs to hear this today but I am beyond pleased to report that after having a string of papers (3) that weren't even getting reviewed - finally I can report that all three are now officially in press (or published)!
Many brain diseases affect more women but despite this, they are largely “missing” from brain research. Why is this, and what needs to be done to improve outcomes for women? Find out here

it’s not lost on me that much headway was made when one particular ally believed in the women at MIT. We need you to dismiss the stories of “difficult” women & act when you see injustice (can be as simple as amplifying that voice)

Dropped my daughter off in a distant town & with that all kids have left the nest. I know it's a right of passage, but I am sad that my constant (albeit nagging) companion has gone. After all, who else will watch British mysteries, bad reality TV, & procrastibake with me?
