this issue of Wired is how I learned about SpaceX. reading it kicked off a long saga that led to me writing this tweet from the cafeteria at 1 Rocket Road, Hawthorne, CA.
This @WIRED cover from 14 years ago (!) would not be out of place today. Love that Falcon 1 in the foreground.

1058 was the first booster I did refurb work on. First booster to fly 19 flights. First Falcon 9 to carry people to space. Rest in Pieces to the King of Kings 😭.
During transport back to Port early this morning, the booster tipped over on the droneship due to high winds and waves. Newer Falcon boosters have upgraded landing legs with the capability to self-level and mitigate this type of issue.

gee it sure is nice that composites have notoriously linear mechanical properties :^) and that fracture mechanics isn’t exponential at all :^).
Ok, so Rush isn't a complete idiot, he knows that the carbon fiber is going to get weaker on every dive. So he invents the Acoustic Real-time Monitoring System. During descent, a computer sends acoustic pings to 20 sensors through the carbon-fiber hull, to detect weakness

excited to see fusion power getting more investment. however, since they are not boiling water to turn a wheel - as is tradition for all new power sources humanity has unlocked - they do not have the Mandate of Heaven.

Dweeb behavior is misrepresenting code reforms that embrace global best practices to reduce per-unit costs for small buildings by conflating them with a tragedy that wouldn’t haven been averted by multiple stairwells *and* wouldn’t be subject to the aforementioned reforms.
The single staircase in Grenfell Tower has been an object of criticism since a disastrous fire claimed the lives of 72 people six years ago. But a bunch of dweebs online in the US think cutting back on safety regs in will improve developer profits, to "solve the housing crisis".

Got to watch @USCRPL test the launch tower yesterday with this handsome hypersonic space pencil. excited for Saturday’s attempt at Space or Nothing, 5 years after the last go at it. Flight on!

@becauseberkeley @sam_d_1995 the people renting those studios are people not renting other housing, which is good for people who can’t afford to rent the studio. more houses good. simple as.

the Waltons are the richest family on Earth, yet in NW AR we have:.•No functional, accessible, or affordable mass transit.•median income of ~$40k/yr.•10% of households and 14% of kids living in poverty. They don’t pay their fair share. How is that acceptable, @rep_stevewomack?.
The Walton family makes more money in one minute than Walmart workers do in an entire year. This is what we mean when we talk about a rigged economy.

@evanjconrad Geographically speaking, where do you suggest these 200,000 units that 'they' are supposed to build be located? I'm assuming you've noticed that the city is on a peninsula.

@11thJeff There should be more housing on the west side, and there would be if a bunch of Malthusian racists hadn’t downzoned it in the 70s.

@SteierMisha @KellerScholl Austin has the same interest rates and negative real rent growth and is building thousands of units. Maybe SF is uniquely bad in other ways.

@opinonhaver this is fine. using powered tools to install small bolts can break them, or damage them such that they’d fail during operation, so using a hand ratchet and then a manual torque wrench to final torque is proper technique.

@Patterdude Hahahahahah what? You think there isn’t a market for 14,000 homes in a beach town adjacent to Los Angeles and abundant jobs? There’s a market for 140,000 homes. Probably more!.

casual genocide joke.
Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!.

@Anna0317 @bikeloveny @santamonicacity then you know it can be congested and full of inattentive drivers - an unsafe place to bike. a concrete barrier will help protect everyone that decides to not drive, and make folks feel more comfortable doing so. that frees up traffic and makes more space for you to drive!.

@ReplySide @low_dosage @bitterwaterblue The mountains have springs, as do several of the valleys. A guy traversed this region via backpacking (the hard way, mostly not on roads) a few years ago:

@PEWilliams_ We are! It’s a success to get off the pad and collect data that can’t be gathered from ground testing. Lots of hard work ahead but this is a qualified W.

@HenrySternCA @JalbyMD No there isn’t. The bill text explicitly prohibits housing construction on wetlands as defined by a 1993 USFWS manual, unless specifically permitted. SB 423 sites are also restricted to residentially zoned land in urban areas. What cities are zoning urban wetlands for housing?.

“From the surface up to Unlimited” is the best phrase in the English language. A thirty mile wide cylinder from the playa to the nearest star system. Now all that’s left to do is pray for mercy and send it, @USCRPL.
Black Rock, NV temporary restriction:.From Sunday, April 21st, 2024 at 13:00 UTC to Monday, April 22nd, 2024 at 01:00 UTC.Altitude: From the surface up to space.

well no shit diaper boy, immigrants make our communities vibrant and diverse while conservative headasses like yourself are a bunch of white bread wussies that claim to hate "snowflakes" but whine about the existence of brown people because they're ~scary~ and ~don't pay taxes~

@chrsdcook @ChrisByBike @thekc23 @UCBerkeley @JesseArreguin @berkeleyside @CityofBerkeley Yes, fewer students in college in the solution, not more housing for them 🙄60% of the park open space will remain, along with housing for 1000+ people. You are not a serious person.

what's the faa going to do if you launch a class 3 without a waiver? arrest you? you could just fire another in the general direction of china and cause mutually assured destruction nuclear doomsday, what can they do then?.

fundamentally, no one on the L.A. city council - progressive members included - is serious about fixing the housing crisis. they either maliciously block housing, or are idiots that don’t know how to actually fix the problem. both are disqualifying for city leadership.

@doctorow your analysis is good - have loved reading your work since I read Little Brother in 2009 - but is incomplete without a discussion of limits placed on housing production in CA cities since the 60s, which directly led to increasing rents and homelessness.

$11 million dollars for a MILE of road that will serve rich exurbanite sprawl. but we still don’t have a functional bus system. awesome.
The $11 million project will add about a mile to Pleasant Grove Road between Arkansas 112 and Rainbow Road to the east, engineer Lance Jobe said. A chart on the city’s website shows the project is to be completed by the end of 2020. #NWADemGaz @Rogers1881.
