It should be against the rules to not bring anything resembling tokens with you at Comp REL when your deck makes eight distinct tokens, and can put multiple different types of counters on those tokens. Mono-White opponent just used dice to represent all of these tokens. Maddening
Kind of hoping that the B&R announcement for Modern, instead of hitting The One Ring or whatever, just unleashes a handful of the slightly less messed up banned cards into the format
Getting another Pro Tour Top 8 was very validating and confidence-restoring after a bit of a dry spell, but wow I feel like I noticed myself make mistakes in almost every round of this tournament and this has really filled me with determination to become much better at this game
Ban list hopes for Modern
Unbanned; Seat of the Synod, Mox Opal, Arcum’s Astrolabe
Banned; Force of Vigor, Ancient Grudge, Stony Silence, Karn the Great Creator, Shattering Spree, Fracturing Gust, Shatterstorm, Creeping Corrosion
Am now dead in the Pro Tour. Loved my Modern deck, but threw a couple rounds with it due to struggling with the heat so much. Very frustrated that this wasn’t held somewhere cooler or with better air conditioning
Getting to battle Simon in the Top 8 was probably my highlight of the weekend. He’s a kind friend, such a delight, and every single time we’ve fought has been so memorable. Can’t wait for the next time
Did okay-but-not-well-enough at the PT such as to just barely not requalify for the next PT in two different ways.
Posted a lil' thing about this (and broader thoughts on agency in competitive Magic etc) in the link;
Tempted to become that person that exclusively plays villain and registers the Level Zero best deck at every tournament. Green in Pioneer, Scam in Modern, Ramp in Standard…
Done being fancy and trying to level the meta-game, ready to force people to try and beat me instead
Hot take; what you choose to play as the 60th card in a flex spot of your constructed deck is wildly less important than having your own coherent internalised reasoning for why it is your 60th card
Exciting things coming up over the next few weeks;
- using webcam on my streams again
- starting to stream Magic leagues with viewer decks
- relaunching my Magic YouTube channel
- releasing my Patreon (where I’ll post my Magic writing)
- starting coaching sessions
Stay tuned <3
Whilst I intend to keep engaging with it as a job for now (and want to have a HoF-equivalent career before I stop being q’d for PTs), it seems unlikely that Magic will ever be a hobby for me again and I doubt my future features many (if any?) big events below PT-level. 1/3
Feels like the first tournament in a long time where I can earnestly say I’m proud of the preparation I did and that regardless of my results tomorrow I know I did everything I reasonably could have
Very excited for the Pro Tour to be back. Bring it on!
#MagicConPhilly
Honestly feels really bad that such an important event is being run in such a hot room. I cannot think or focus at all because of how faint and over-stimmed I feel :/
This might be the best Standard format I’ve played in almost 4 years? Honestly can’t think of any that come close post-WAR. Super varied meta, no best deck, every deck has exploitable weaknesses, interesting games, and still so much room for exploration
Excited for PT Seattle. The last PT I'm currently qualified for, but actually feel at ease about it. Whatever the outcome of this PT, and whatever path my life takes as a result, I am looking forward to it :)
For better or worse I’ve started playing MTG Arena again
Figured I may as well start a Trophy Deck thread for my MOM drafts. Went 7-0 with this in Platinum. Tetsuko was a real over-performer here
Exciting news; myself,
@JasonILTG
and
@NicoleTipple
are now hosting
@SanctumOfAllPod
! Excited to be co-hosting a podcast with these two, both of them are great players and great people :)
Still setting up a few things, but the first episode has now been released!

You ever feel like you just live on a different planet in regards to what decks feel playable to you? I sometimes worry that I’m handicapping myself with my deck choices, but I’ve tried 4 of the 5 Tier 1 Modern decks and exactly one of them felt okayish..
Which is okay! It’s rare that any interest lasts forever, and this interest is fading in part because I’m getting more of a sense of what matters to me in life, which is great! But I can’t deny that I just don’t really love this game anymore. 3/3
I spent most of my 20s Very Depressed and Magic filled that happiness void for me in much the same way things like MMOs do for others; a distraction from life. Now I’m happier and have started building deep connections not based on a card game Magic just doesn’t hit the same. 2/3
Eliminated from
#PTPhyrexia
. Still feel like Mardu Sacrifice was a good deck for this field but a mixture of hitting bad matchups and running badly in the games themselves was just too much
Past a certain point deck tuning stops being about making the perfect list, but instead becomes seeking to understand the role your deck takes in certain match-ups and positions. If this understanding is consistent with your list then the actual details of the list barely matter
After lots of experience of drafting on Arena ladder these last few months I feel like it is much worse than drafting anywhere else for a lot of reasons, and that it only vaguely resembles drafting at Comp REL to the extent that a lot of knowledge is just not transferable.
Really though you should all start maindecking Torpor Orb in Commander because that card is perfectly positioned to piss off the Elesh Norn players *and* piss off the people who are angry at the Elesh Norn players
Have a really exciting Magic-related project coming out next week! Lets just say if you're somehow not already fans of
@JasonILTG
and
@NicoleTipple
you sure will be soon
Lately this viewpoint aligns with my viewpoint on a lot of things in life.
I've been learning to cook + bake very recently, and these are interesting from the perspective that you can break down a recipe into just a list of instructions, or you can break it down into theory. 1/x

Whilst my Pro Tour experience was very frustrating for reasons outside of my control, it’s been inspiring hearing about some great players crushing it this weekend, and I am loving exploring Barcelona with my partner; this city is so, so lovely
@alsonamedjosh
Honestly if someone is burnt out on Magic the solution is to have a break from it imo. All Magic all the time is unhealthy and would burn anyone out, there’s more to life than that
If I was to start offering Magic coaching at some point soon is this something people would be interested in? How much would you consider to be a fair rate per hour?
Back in Bant Nexus Standard a spectator called a judge over when I accidentally skipped my extra turn because I forgot that I’d cast Nexus of Fate in my opponent’s end step one Very Long turn ago….
I was unbelievably embarrassed lmao
Did badly at the PT. Ran poorly in a couple key spots, but also think my play and drafting were just generally sloppy at points too. Loved my constructed decklist, shocked more people don't play Blue Sun's in Phoenix's sb
Need to tighten up even more before Seattle. One PT left
I've been invited by Wizards to be the end-boss of Standard Showdown this Friday 17th May at Firestorm Games, Cardiff! If whoever tops the leaderboard can then beat me in a match of Standard they'll win some sweet prizes, but I won't make it easy...
I will be running a small team for the Magic World Championship alongside
@CainRianhard
. If you’re qualified and you’d like to hear more or are interested in being considered reach out to one of us within the next couple days
I've been enjoying Magic a lot more recently. I'm glad that my burnout over the game has passed, makes streaming much easier lol. It helps that Standard is excellent right now
I do find it strange how quickly a lot of people move to find someone in the DQ incident who they can see as a villain, when it seems to me much more like an incredibly complicated situation that we don't know all the information about. There's no requirement to pass judgement
Playing the Pokémon World Champs decks is making me really wish Magic would start making these again. If Wizards started printing a few gold-bordered Magic Worlds decks every year at $20 each I’d buy every single one in a heartbeat
After a lifetime of hating myself, I've been spending a lot of time and energy recently trying to learn how to cultivate and practice self-love. It's only the beginning of my journey, but possible others find my current thoughts on this process helpful;
I've had lifelong intense anxiety. I've tried a bunch of different SSRIs etc and none of them ever helped
I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and am undergoing ADHD meds titration. Ten days into trying Concerta and my anxiety is the lowest it has ever been. Genuinely lifechanging
@DynamoNestico
As someone who is Extremely autistic, being able to be a Magic pro has been a lifeline for me that has allowed me to support myself consistently for the first extended period of time in my life. The world is Very not built for autistic people but I found a niche that works for me
Glad my piece of writing resonated with people, and thank you everyone for the kind words <3
On an unrelated note, shout out to my day 2 Pro Tour draft deck that felt like a cube deck. Pillaging to find Lockpicker to flash back Pillage is very 😍
I’ve been trying to severely cut back on the amount of short-form and disposable content I consume (including social media), be more intentional with my media choices and time usage, and allow myself quiet space in which it’s okay to feel bored and then see where my brain 1/3
Was expecting to hate Tempted by the Ring as it reads awfully, but I think it might be one of my favourite limited mechanics ever? Plays wonderfully, lots of tough, rewarding decisions, redefines combat and creature sizing in interesting ways. Surprisingly fantastic
Saw King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard live last night, what a great gig! They opened with The Silver Cord which I'd not listened to yet and it was my favourite bit of the show, I now desperately need more music like that in my life...
Also got the best band shirt ever :)
5-3 in day 1 of the Pro Tour, pretty solid finish :)
Highlights of the Standard portion included literally running RB Reanimator out of win conditions, and decking in a game 1 against Grixis Midrange (luckily I won the postboard games lol)
Okay normally I'm on the "too many spoilers train" but omg this spoiler season is sooo cool already
"Half these planeswalkers are getting compleated but we won't tell you who yet" is such a great hook
Fell from 3-1 to 3-4 in Worlds yesterday to not make the cut for day 2. Was kind of soul-crushing, felt like I had very little agency. Has definitely added to my already very present feelings of not really caring for this game as much anymore
Day 1 of Rain Learns Basic Cooking Skills and fuck this is so tasty. Legit super proud of myself
Potatoes (rosemary, garlic, salt) and chick peas + bacon + red/white onion (paprika, garlic, rosemary, basil, salt, bbq sauce) :3
Strangely validating both to see my name on this list, and to see that so many other great players sit alongside me in not making the cut for the next PT
Here's the 37 players that appeared in all five of the PTs since the pandemic (ONE, MOM, LTR, MKM, OTJ). I'm not counting Worlds against anyone because it's a smaller field, but actually everyone except Shuhei was in Vegas. Checkmarks are invites for Amsterdam; we'll lose 7 more.
Reminder that I posted my Pro Tour decklist to my Patreon over 6 hours before decklist submission :p
Anyways, hoping to have a slightly updated list and sideboard guide for Standard Orzhov Midrange up on my Patreon by Friday ^_^
After a few years of hearing people request that I coach them at Magic the Gathering, I am now finally taking the plunge. Info about my coaching sessions available in the link below :)
One last time;
@CainRianhard
and I are running a team together for the Magic World Championship. If you’re qualified and interested in being considered for this make sure to reach out to one of us! We are hoping to finalise the team lineup this weekend
Ended up dropping from
#DreamhackAtlanta
with a Not Great record, event was kind of sensory hell for my autistic brain and that definitely hurt my play at a couple points. Need to figure out if I’m playing the $10k tomorrow or just taking it easy
Actually kind of excited for Day of Judgment to enter Standard from the perspective that it feels like the only way a 4 mana sweeper is actually going to be at a good enough rate to compete with Sunfall (I think people still don't fully realise quite how absurd Sunfall is)
Oh also Standard has been *very* fun to stream this past week, seems to be pretty clearly the best Constructed format at the moment by a pretty wide margin.
Early MVP of new Standard is Caretaker's Talent, I'm more than slightly obsessed with that card.
We’re not meant to stare at screens all day consuming endless information and stimulation. For most people this is actually deeply unhealthy. If this resonates at all please consider giving some of these steps a try 3/3
Finished 10th place in the Standard Challenge on MTGO with Orzhov Midrange with a 5-2 record
Wins; mirror, Grixis, 2x Rakdos Mid, Mono-Blue
Loses; Jeskai Control, Big Esper
Been enjoying working on this deck. Would people be interested in me writing about this on my Patreon?
gravitates (such as towards reading, exercising or learning a new skill). It’s a gradual process that takes time but already the results feel revelatory. I am the happiest I have felt in many years and this is only the beginning. 2/3
Absolutely made the right decision by playing zero Magic the last couple days and just exploring the city with the boywife instead, loved every moment 😊
@PlayMTG
In the event, don’t think more than ten minutes ahead. Focus on making the best decisions in the game you’re in and don’t think about what winning or losing this game means for your tournament
Practice good self-care; rest the day before, keep well fed and hydrated the day of
Reposting for the morning crowd;
I have a Patreon now! This is where you can find my Magic writing from now on :) My first piece is nearly 4,000 words about the Mardu Sacrifice deck I won a PTQ with last weekend
Every piece of support means a ton <3
March of the Machine is doing team-up legends: two legends on one card.
But forget about canon or who's dead. Imagine we take any two legends in Magic and put them together. Edgar and Atraxa. Niv-Mizzet and Nekusar. Urza and Mishra. Who would YOU most want to see?
#wotcstaff
@DynamoNestico
I've historically found it near impossible to get or hold down any form of conventional employment because of the needs I have due to being autistic. Despite years of unemployment beforehand, professional Magic meant I could buy a house
Yo
Yes this is actually me :p
Zero interest in engaging in Magic discourse, but figured I should have a personal Twitter account where I can talk about Magicy stuff if I so wish, post selfies etc
I've been playing Standard UW Control a lot on stream recently, winning over 90% of my matches across 40+ matches!
Now you can read a detailed match-up and sideboard guide (3000+ words!) for the deck over on my Patreon :) Perfect for this weekend's Standard Metagame Challenge!
@DynamoNestico
It’s true I need assistance at times due to struggling with things others can just do, but autistic adults get called grown children often for not fitting into society’s notion of what adulthood should look like, and I can’t help but read your post as infantalising and cruel :/
@Oritart
The only way I know how to engage with hobbies/interests is letting them consume me completely, anything less than that feels like a waste of time for some reason that I find hard to put into words
