Uganda Development Bank (UDB) joined Microhaem Scientific (MHS), a Ugandan medical supplies company, as it flagged off its first consignment of locally manufactured diagnostic kits to National Medical Stores. The government has granted MHS a 10-year offtake guarantee through the Ministry of Health. The diagnostic kits manufactured by @Microhaem will boost the efficiency, convenience, and accuracy of Malaria, HIV, and Sickle cell diagnosis. Local manufacturers like MHS will go a long way in bridging the employment gap in Uganda and import substitution. UDB financed the project with over USD 7 million, most of which went into asset finance, while the other portion helped purchase raw materials. The project aligns with UDB's mandate and strategic plan to support manufacturing enterprises. The aim is to increase the product range and scale for import substitution, export promotion, and improved terms of trade to grow the industrial sector and improve its contribution to the nation. In her remarks, UDB Managing Director Patricia Ojangole described the event as "a significant milestone" and "a testament to the remarkable potential of Uganda's innovation and industrial capabilities." She added that the test kits manufactured by MHS are not just a product but a symbol of hope, resilience, and the bright future of Ugandan ingenuity. The MD said the kits will enhance our healthcare system, improve diagnostic capabilities, and ultimately contribute to saving lives. The MHS Managing Director, Cedric Akwesigye, thanked UDB for the financing it extended to the entity. He said this emboldened MHS to pursue its ambitious goal and gave other partners confidence to support the manufacturer. The company, ISO-13485-certified for in vitro diagnostics (IVD) for malaria, HIV, and Sickle cells, currently employs 423 permanent staff and 27 temporary staff. #UDB_MHS #MadeInUganda #HealthcareInnovation
