I have been the COVID ward consultant with a respiratory colleague for the last 2 days. We reached full capacity within 48 hours of the ward opening and are going to a second ward tomorrow. This is REAL. Stringent isolation is the key.

A day of mixed emotions- my little girl has now finished school. She got 3A-stars in her A-levels today and will be going to UCL next month to study Languages. Happiness is the obvious emotion at her brilliant performance but part of me is trying to cope with her leaving home.
Today we bid farewell to 2 of our senior most Specialist Nurses, one by retirement after 38 years of NHS and the other by career progression. A semblance of a fond send off by social distancing, with Exec Director of Nursing gracing the occasion.

Yesterday I was called by one of our Nurse Endoscopists to assess a polyp during colonoscopy on an elderly patient. It must have taken a lot for him to call me. But he put the patient first, before his pride. And together, we removed 2polyps. Patient happy. Team work.

Today’s afternoon oesophageal clinic ended with a 45 min consultation with a patient who got an answer after several visits to many clinics…..has tears of relief and leaves me with this for the Coronation Weekend!! Thank you dear patient.
Getting to grips with COVID ward management now. 2 wards open at Darlington now, third being readied and fourth being closed to admissions. CPAP ventilation training underway. Twice a day senior team meetings set up. ITU and Palliative team in reach. All within 4days!!
