I’m an alcoholic.
But 2 years ago, I took my last sip of alcohol.
The last 6 months have been the hardest but I am so proud that I’ve stayed away for 2 whole years. At the height of my addiction, I was drinking 750ml of vodka daily.
You can do it to.
Lmk if I can help ❤️
I’ve been a smoker for the last 5+ years, and it’s been something I’ve tried multiple times to quit unsuccessfully.
Today, I’m going on 4 weeks without a cigarette 🎉
Hey friends,
Due to some unfortunate and unexpected circumstances, I am in need of a new job
If you or your company are looking for a remote, mid-level (2.5 years exp), Ruby on Rails full-stack developer with dev-ops & OSS experience, I’d love to connect.
RT’s appreciated🙏
If Ruby has millions of developers, I am one of them. If Ruby has ten developers, I am one of them. If Ruby has only one developer, that is me. If Ruby has no developers, that means I am no longer on this earth.
If the world is against Ruby, I am against the world.
Exactly 5 months ago today I smoked my last cigarette.
I was a pack-a-day smoker then and thought it was an addiction I’d never break. On top of the health effects, it had ruined relationships, and led to some really bad times in my life.
I’m so happy that’s all behind me now
Officially one year clean from cigarettes.
Literally accepted it would eventually kill me but didn't think I'd ever be able to quit, but here we are.
If you're a smoker and want to quit, there is hope. I promise.
Excited to say I accepted an offer today.
A big thank you to everyone helped over the course of this process by retweeting my job search tweets or sending leads/encouragement. I couldn’t have done it without y’all 💙
Was starting to rewrite an old blog post about my
@code
+
@rails
setup but, surprisingly, I got bored. And, per usual, in an attempt to cure my boredom, I spent 4x as much time trying to not have to rewrite this post again.
Anyways, here you go:
It's officially been 3 years since I took control of my life back from alcohol. It's been a hard road but I'm much happier with the sober version of my life.
I never thought I could stop drinking so trust me when I say it's possible if it's something you struggle with too.
Full
@remote_ruby
episode will be out soon but in the meantime you can hear
@dhh
talk to us about
@rails
7 on YouTube. Thanks to everyone who showed up during the livestream!
You know the
@syntaxfm
episode is extra
#tasty
when you have to restart so you can start taking notes. Officially have learned more from
@wesbos
and
@stolinski
than several of my college professors.....................combined. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Happy Birthday to one of the greatest humans I’ve ever met on this planet.
@jmcharnes
has had a special impact in my life and I know he’s had the same for many of you so join me in wishing him the happiest of birthday’s today ❤️
Was excited to meet up with
@MikeRogers0
at RubyConf but instead I’ve learned of his passing 😞 I got the chance to get to know Mike in Zoom calls, discord, meetups, and more. He was a fantastic member of the community, who I considered a friend, and will be greatly missed.
Promised myself I’d ship a side project that’s been tormenting me this weekend but I can’t even avoid procrastinating on the stuff I want to do 😅
So I touched dirt instead. 🏜
Every year I try to rally as many friends as I can to send people to
@railsconf
&
@rubyconf
for free.
Going to
@railsconf
in 2018, with barely enough money in my pocket to eat the whole week, changed my career & I want the chance to give that opportunity to someone else.
So....
Got a big interview today and I’d appreciate all the good vibes or prayers or whatever your preferred method is 😅 I haven’t been this nervous since interviewing for a lifeguard position at 15
Just submitted a support request to RubyGems to request ownership of one of
@MikeRogers0
’s gems. Even though he’s gone, his projects will continue to be valuable to the community if I have anything to say about it.
Shit sucks man.
Amsterdam is one of my new favorite cities. So thankful to
@buzzsprout
&&
#RailsWorld
for sending me.
Possibly the best conference I've attended so far - right up there with Rails SaaS - and I'm super excited for Toronto next year!
@AmandaBPerino
friggin killed it 🤘
Who’s doing cool shit in Ruby & needs sponsors on
@github
?
I’ve decided to start rotating my sponsorships to show more maintainers that their work is appreciated. ❤️
DMs are open if you’d rather tell me privately.
💎🙏💎
No matter how productive I am during the week, at the end I find myself thinking:
- It wasn't good enough
- I could have done more
- I should be better than this
But this week I am trying to break out of this thought pattern.
I did my best. And next week I will do better 🤘
Just because someone says they're okay, doesn't mean they actually are...and I've been lying to a lot of people recently about it.
But I'm finally ready to do something about it.
12 weeks sober.
Biggest change is my depressive mood swings are way less severe, which has been quite literally a life saver.
I’ve never talked about the fact that I’m an alcoholic publicly but I’m beginning to think about writing a blog post.
1/3
🎂 Happy birthday to the legend
@excid3
. You’re almost a boomer! 👏
Hopefully hotwire doesn’t make a big release so you &
@bnmxc9
can do something fun without you being on your laptop 😜
Did you know you can use pry to quickly show the location of a method you are using or trying to find?
You can pass it a few different things:
`show-method Post.first.slug`
`show-method Post
#slug
`
And it will display the method in your console!
Bonus: check out `show-source`
Who's been inspiring you lately in the Ruby community?
For me it's gotta be
@joemasilotti
with all the work he's doing on RailsDevs and in the community by advocating for early career devs.
Absolutely killing it 👏
Can't wait for yall to hear his
@RailsSaaS
talk! 🔥
Welcome to Ruby for All with myself &
@codewithjulie
! If it isn’t in your favorite podcast player yet, it will be in the next day or two.
We hope you will join us on this journey! ❤️
📝
I went all in on asdf and wrote up a quick tutorial showing how easy it is to get a Rails 6.1 app with Ruby 3, Webpacker, & Postgres on a clean install of macOS Big Sur.
Welcome to Rails in 2021 🔥
Had a pretty rough week but ending it on a fantastic
@remote_ruby
recording has cheered me up quite a bit. I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!
I hope you all have an amazing weekend 💜
🎟 I’ve decided to sponsor someone to go to
@rubyconf
.
Want to attend but can’t afford it?
1. Rate
@remote_ruby

I’ll choose a winner tomorrow and buy their ticket.

today.

- 1,429,562 lines removed
- 340 commits

I learned so much and will be forever grateful to
@coderberry

@hopsoft
. It was a hell of a ride.
Happy Wednesday, Rubyists! Let's kick off the second-half of the week with a question:
What's your favorite Ruby gem of all time? Reply with your answer and I'll compile a list of the top 10 gems for all Ruby developers to know and share it on
@rubyforall
.
#RubyOnRails
#webdev
This morning,
@collin_jilbert
& I released the first issue of
@therubyradar
, a snack sized weekly newsletter for
#ruby
and
#rails
developers.
For the first issue, our goal was to ship quickly, which we were able to accomplish.
Thread on this later; for now I’m off to IKEA 🚀
nothing better than finally completing a task you’ve been putting off for months and having it take 30 minutes leaving you a few hours to think about what a moron you are
Today’s the day! 🤩
@excid3
,
@jmcharnes
, & I are giving a talk at
@railsconf
(1:40 in D140) on how to start your own
#ruby
podcast.
It’ll be my first talk EVER and I am so happy it’s with two of my best friends.
It would mean a lot if at least one person shows up 😇
No better feeling than scrolling twitter and seeing a screenshot and recognizing the app you’re working on day to day. It gets me so hype to ship.
So happy to be out of the shadows and working on something people use in the real world.
Finally found an end to my burnout.
💜
What's the smallest win I can get that doesn't let me go overboard but gets me closer to my goals?
That's the question I've been asking myself this weekend.
And it's why this morning I hopped out of bed and walked to the closest gym, touched the door, then walked home.
Along with
@excid3
- I’m giving away a copy of Jason's new course on
#StimulusReflex
with
#Rails
! 🎉
Just retweet this and I'll pick a winner on Friday.
