I burned out. Hard.
I'm trying to write a blog post about it, but it's a lot.
It's not programming I'm burned out on, it's the extracurricular around programming.
It's a combination of...
- Over-extending myself
- Seeking identity in my career
- Seeking validation/acceptance
My wife has been in the hospital since Friday and it’s been a pretty rough journey for her. She’s carrying our third child and while the baby is healthy, Shannon is having (and keeps having) difficulties. 😓 If you think about it, we could use some good vibes.
I'm building my first "real" course: "Interactive Rails with StimulusReflex"
We've been using StimulusReflex a lot at Podia lately, and it's been a lot of fun. I'm excited to take some of what we've learned and share it.
🥲 After a weird start to 2023, I'm back working on ActiveRecord Cookbook.
✍️ I just wrote ~2,000 words about validations and database constraints with more to go. 💆♂️
What else would you like to learn in the book?
Anyone hired a developer on a small, but recurring contract? (think like 6-10hr/mo)
I need help on
@job_boardly
and don't know where to begin.
How do you find people? Any advice/things to avoid?
After building the application from the course 1 million times (or so it seems) I've finally started recording videos for my Interactive Rails with StimulusReflex course. 😱 I'm hoping to get a sample video posted this week.
🥂 Our time together is coming to end, dear. I can't thank you enough for the time saved these past 10 years.
As we move into May, 2024 I'll always remember 4242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424.
Today I start a one month sabbatical at work. 😱
In an effort to make the most of this time, I’m going to disconnect from Twitter. 🧘
If you want to chat, feel free to email me. Otherwise, see you soon! ❤️
As of this morning, I have 65 minutes of videos recorded for the StimulusReflex course! 🎥 Once I get 4 more videos recorded, I'm going to start selling early access. 👀 I think that's going to happen THIS WEEK. 😱
Two very good Ruby on Rails books released today:
@palkan_tula
's Layered Design for Ruby on Rails Applications
and
@andatki
's High Performance PostgreSQL for Rails
I can't recommend these enough!
I think it’s safe to say
#RailsWorld
reenergized us.
We usually record one episode of
@remote_ruby
a week, if that.
Next week we’re recording FIVE episodes! ☕️
This sounds wild, but hear me out.
I recently learned that if I read technical books one chapter at a time, instead of rushing through them, I actually learn things and finish the book. 🤯
Last Tuesday night while I was at
@railsconf
my 11mo old was admitted to the hospital. It was awful being far away and helpless.
SO many of you consistently checked in and provided encouragement. It meant a lot to me and I just want to say thank you.
#rubyfriends
truly are 💯
Today we officially begin migrating
@podia
off Webpacker. 🔥 In an effort to share more (thx
@aarondfrancis
article) I will update this thread as we make progress.🪜
The Ruby community can be so kind.
A couple of people have run into an issue with one of the lessons in my StimulusReflex Course. Every email has been incredibly kind and encouraging- even though they're having an issue with something I left out. ❤️
Are you at
#RailsWorld
? Do you want to appear on an episode of
@remote_ruby
?
Come to the
@buzzsprout
podcast booth during tonight’s after party. We’ll have an open mic and a couple of minutes for you to chat.
It's totally fine to learn PHP by using Laravel
It's totally fine to learn Javascript by using React/Vue
It's totally fine to learn CSS by using Tailwind
I'm carrying the torch from
@excid3
on the job board software powering the GoRails jobs site.
I'm not sure how much "building in public" I'll do, but if you want to start a job board check it out and let me know what you think!
I love
@Alpine_JS
more and more each day.
Last night I went through Component Party and compared Alpine versus other JS frameworks I use and like. Alpine was often the simplest.
I love the new
@rails
website.
The code samples are a nice touch! The copy "scales from HELLO WORLD to IPO" brought a smile to my face. Rails 7 is bringing the good vibes. 🧘
I've been trying to optimize test readability, recently.
Even when it comes at the cost of repeating myself. 🫢

I've ruined hundreds (thousands?) of tests in my career trying to abstract the test setup. (DRY BB)
It starts out great- but code changes. Blink and there's 50
We have not one, but TWO developer positions open at

! 😱 My DMs are open if you want to chat about the position(s). I'm also glad to hop on a Zoom call with you. 🤗 Come work with us! Lots of Rails Rails Rails Rails Rails Rails Rails Rails Rails Rai
TGIF but also looking forward to Monday: Interactive Rails with StimulusReflex will be coming out of early access. 🎉The source code and final videos will be available.
The work
@vinistock
(and I'm sure many others) is doing with the Ruby LSP is phenomenal.
Better editor support for Ruby is something I've wanted for years. It's becoming a reality.
I stumbled across background noise in macOS last month. I keep it on low while listening to music, and it's very calming.

@MSCSK12
I recognize no system is perfect, but casually sending this as an email without any details was horrifying as a parent.
I hope none of us (MSCS or the families!) have to go through this again. But if we do, please put more consideration into how you communicate it. It matters.
I’m itching to dig back into Hanami.
Would anyone be interested in hanging out in a live stream where I (a Hanami beginner) build a Hanami 2 app?
I’m thinking sometime in the next couple of weeks.
#rs
I am JAZZED about a
@remote_ruby
episode we recorded with
@calebporzio
. Lots of good conversation around Alpine.js and HTML over the wire. ⚡️
It should arrive in two weeks. 📆

I don't want anything that happened here this week to stay here- I had an absolute blast seeing existing/new Ruby friends.
Ok, I think it's time. If I can put a bow on a couple of more videos tonight I'm going to open Interactive Rails with StimulusReflex for (very) early access. 👀
2 weeks and 8 interviews later...
I think we just recorded the last episode of
@remote_ruby
for 2023.
There are a lot of fun conversations in and around Ruby coming over the next couple of months.🎧
I've been making sure to make progress on my StimulusReflex course each day. I just published 3 more videos leaving me just 4 minutes shy of 2 hours worth of content. 🎉 Still more to come, too!
I used delegated types for the first time today.
I started with single table inheritance, changed to DT, git reset back to STI, and THEN went back to DT. I think I love it?
Maybe
@excid3
,
@andrewmcodes
, and I can chat about it on
@remote_ruby
soon.
Are you a
#rails
developer interested in learning more about StimulusReflex? Interactive Rails with StimulusReflex is available TODAY. 🥳 There is almost 5 hours of content complete with source code!
