The longer I work in academia, the more I'm convinced there's just ONE THING students want more than good grades :
A kind word from an authority figure.
Malaysians - go to S'pore for dream job
Singaporeans - go to M'sia for dream house, dream food, dream fuel cost, dream shopping, dream beach, dream mountain, etc.
Friend of mine had a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. Doc said SJMC could perform coiling surgery. Estimated costs were from RM100,000 to RM150,000.
Surgery eventually done in HKL.
For RM306.
Go figure.
Since MCO 3.0 is near, let's remind ourselves of certain definitions as used by some companies:
MCO - Must Come Office
CMCO - Confirm Must Come Office
EMCO - Everyday Must Come Office
RMCO - Really Must Come Office
Declare MCO in 2 days. Don't have SOP.
SOP come out after Day 1. Warn ppl to obey.
Ppl kena fine, all their fault.
VIP blatantly break SOP no penalty. Issue statement on how VIP is innocent.
Case fall sikit, relax MCO
Case rise also relax MCO
Rinse.
Repeat.

's "Anti-Fragile". Now I know why I have an innate suspicion towards:
a) fit-bits/activity trackers
b) after-school tuition which fill up a child's week
c) packaged vacations
d) KPIs'
e) systematic theology
@Duurianne
from my experience over past years:
- ICU govt hospital top class
- bill settlement govt hospital lebih cepat
- only 'big' diff is a) waiting time b) "ambience" and c) infrastructure for **visitors** (4 patients still good)
heck, govt hospital food also not that bad, lol
Actually, given the numerous problems with STD, teenage pregnancy, unwanted babies, etc. isn't abstinence logically the best solution? Wouldn't it help a lot if young ppl were taught to wait until marriage?
We need to report all parts of the story of Omicron in Msia.
It arrived.
It got caught without spreading.
Nobody got hurt.
It's disappeared (for now)
Ppl usually stop at, or focus on, "It arrived".
Tabligh gathering was Feb 27- Mar 1. Only logical that we begin to see infection n death rate rise around now (i.e. more than 14 days after that).
When was MRO announcement followed by long queues and mad rush home? March 16-18.
Ergo, death rates will soar after April 1.

Whether legal or voluntary, smokers should realise they're harming ppl's health. Doesn't take much to just move a distance away and light up there.
All the parents have agreed to stay away from the rescued boys until all have been rescued, for the sake of solidarity n support i.e. everyone assumes their son is still in the cave until all are out.

Just guessing here: SPM results is a very poor predictor of one's economic status 20 years after.
A much better predictor? One's parents' economic status whilst one is doing the SPM.
Am hardly an expert on fat tails, black swans, antifragility and so on but this piece summarizes 12 key principles I've learnt from

et al over the last 3-4 years.
One reason why Malaysia flattened the curve when we were at 200 daily cases (between March and June) is because the country acted AS IF it was psychologically at 10,000.
But recently when we had 2,000 daily cases, we acted as if was only 200 cases.
@ErnestOnPT
there are MANY roads within the housing areas which r relatively safe.
even granted the absence of cycling infrastructure, surely the kids' desire to ride **like dare devils** on the main road can be curbed?
Working on my talk in HK next week on the "barbell strategy" for education. As always in these workshops, I am 120% sure people will ask me, "But who is Taleb?" 🤣
@nntaleb
Instead of measuring our wealth, we should measure our unwealth: The difference between what we HAVE and what we WANT.
Not every rich man is wealthy but some poor ppl - desiring less - are rich indeed

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have purchased a qualification from a degree mill. I should've renounced it way before I became a Cabinet Minister. This is unbecoming of a leader in Malaysia Baharu. I will now work to ensure that all fake credentials are rooted out."
Is that so hard?
If you live by them, they're called principles or beliefs
If you're willing to suffer and die by them, they're called convictions.
If neither, they're called tweets.

1-2 days i think. family had to sit for hours outside.
overall, given the cost and the importance of the procedure, i think the waiting is worth it
M Indira Gandhi will file a RM100mil civil suit against IGP Abdul Hamid Bador over PDRM's failure to locate her daughter.
Police have reportedly not responded to Indira Gandhi Action Team's follow-up attempts since the IGP didn't attend a scheduled meeting with Indira in Sept.
A huuuuuge criterion I have in deciding if I want a certain job (or promotion) is whether it'll keep me from having dinner with my family.
I'm proud to say that after about 25 years in the corp world I still eat with my wife and kids at least 3-4x weekly.

so....the robber chased the police man (!!),
and the cop's partner shot him,
and the robber continued to run a few feet (after being shot) then fell....
and he got shot AGAIN?!

Yr concern is for high-risk groups; Francois's is for millions of healthy children (by defn a low risk group).
Instead of blasting each other on social media, experts like u should sit down, listen to each other and work something out?
I think that's "how society should work".
@malazdotcom
I know 4 ppl who used to work at LKW uni (and one of them is my dad) and **everyone** of them had more horror stories than good stories to tell.
These food-sellers (in JB, apparently) don't take no shit. I saw only one of the 'posters' recently (via

Beg-packers aren't eye-sores. Wanna see real eye-sores? Go to the lorongs along Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Alor, Jalan Petaling, etc.
Junkies, homeless, disabled, sick, hopeless.
All Malaysians.
I've blocked RPK and I invite every Malaysian (who loves his/her country and doesn't wish to be fed nonsense) to do the same.
At least Jibby's tweets are amusing, like listening to a jail bird yakking.
RPK? There's just no point. Nada, zip, zilch. It's nothing but hateful BS.

This week the truth of the above hit home.
I turned down a major promotion and I've never felt "wealthier". As
@paulportesi
says, if you can't say No then you're truly enslaved.
Colleague's son worked 10 days straight from 9pm to 5am bcos US company, then continued 8am till evening.
For 10 days.
On the 11th day he complained of breathlessness, later died in the ambulance.
This was March.
Hug our loved ones, folks. Tell them don't die for the company
To the hating Twitter-verse, this tweet below is about telling us M'sians to care more about our own homeless folks, instead of being annoyed with white beggars.
Beg-packers are the least of M'sia's problems. We have our own to worry about.
Beg-packers aren't eye-sores. Wanna see real eye-sores? Go to the lorongs along Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Alor, Jalan Petaling, etc.
Junkies, homeless, disabled, sick, hopeless.
All Malaysians.
To repeat (as if it makes a diff la): I think it's better if we focus our energies on helping less fortunate M'sians, instead of slamming beg-packers.
NGOs' like Permata and M'sian Care have soup kitchens during the weekends, I think. I know the latter runs drug rehabs in OUG

that's called, uh, Convectional Rainfall: When it's damn hot, air rises, but when it reaches high enough, it cools, condenses and, voilà, rain falls.
The hotter it is, the more rain.

Wrong reasons to be a lecturer:
1. I want to change the world (students just want their degree)
2. I want to be known as an intellectual (then write a book; in class ppl only care about exams)
3. I want to join a vibrant learning community (what on earth is that?)
Wrong reasons to be a journalist:
1. I want to be glamorous (reporting is dull and tedious legwork).
2. I want to expose the truth (you report the facts for news. Opinions are for op-eds).
3. I want to change the world (readers decide what to do with the info you report).

Dude, a desert's humidity is fricking zero. No water in the air or on the ground (the occasional oasis notwithstanding).
M'sia is a tropical place, hot and wet af. My point, though, is there's nothing unusual about VERY HOT weather followed by VERY HEAVY rain in our country.
@DrJasonLeong
What if students sing the song in Mandarin to express their love for the song, the fact that the Chinese are part of Malaysia, for diversity, etc.?
