I guess everyone stayed here. I like language, birds, cats, trains, buses, long walks, cities, and other things š» "vulnerable road user" opinions mine
Update: I'm super excited to join
@Berkeley_EECS
in July 2023 as an assistant professor!
Until then (starting in September), I'll be a Young Investigator at AI2 in Seattle hosted by
@ai2_mosaic
:)
Looking forward to diving more into language use/interaction/computation etc.!
I am on the job market this year for academic and research positions!
My research spans NLP, ML, and vision. I build interactive systems that learn to use language to interact with people.

Feel free to reach out by email. More info on my website

Organizing a virtual NLP house party with Daphne Ippolito and
@RishiBommasani
this Saturday evening (EDT). Weāll have themed Zoom chat rooms with a Slack workspace to coordinate. DM or email me for calendar/Slack link, and share it with any and all NLP/CL friends and colleagues!
Officially leaving Seattle today! I had a really wonderful year at
@allen_ai
@ai2_mosaic
@uwnlp
and will miss so many friends and colleagues, both human and avian. Attaching some photos in this thread.
Excited about this, and congrats to Aayush and Conrad! I had embargoed my dissertation for ACL anonymity, but it's available directly here: (link is a direct download to ~10MB pdf)
Queer in AI needs financial support to run our grad app aid program. We are currently running on a very limited budget and we have many more applicants than we can support.

Q&A session for our paper on cross-database semantic parsing is later today in sessions 14A/15A!
Our paper pushes evaluation of cross-database semantic parsing systems, and uncovers some of the generalization challenges of this new setting:

Introducing the 4th Visually Grounded Interaction and Language Workshop! Our highly interdisciplinary event will push the boundaries of language grounding systems. Have a look at our speakers and vote for us in the EACL-ACL-EMNLP-NAACL Workshop Survey!
California friends: these cats still need to be adopted, and the foster is willing to drive anywhere in California. So even if you're in the Bay Area, would you consider adopting these two cats? They really need a home. Please help keep them out of a shelter.
I'll be at ACL in Toronto next week! I've reserved a number of 15 min slots in my calendar for planned meetings; use this link to book: and I'll reach out to coordinate day-of. Happy to chat about research, academia, language, etc.
Yes! A language agent is an _agent_ that _uses language_ by generating and understanding it in the context of a situated interaction with another language agent. We are all language agents!
We were really excited to have
@karthik_r_n
from
@princeton_nlp
join us today to give us the good oil on the future of language agents in the age of Foundation Models!

It's not on the website yet, but I got a reply from the organizers earlier today: the poster boards will be 1m width x 2.5m height and they suggest using A0 portrait posters.

I have thought about the widespread integration of LLMs into products like Word as a perverse experiment in language change. The tools (nearly all of which are software) we use to produce planned language will not only be stuck in a specific time period,
Seattle has some very sweet birds, including my neighborhood friends (last 3 photos). Last photo here includes Bird Bird, the only crow I ended up learning to recognize because of its beak, which lives in my neighborhood.

Targets closing because of "crime" is so ridiculous. I live on top of the one in Oakland that's closing. They regularly board up completely intact windows. No idea why, except to make it seem like they're getting broken into often?
@xwang_lk
I guess to generalize, if language is a subset of an action space, then producing language is taking that action on another agent, and understanding language is being acted upon by another agent.
@emilymbender
@daphneipp
... but my impression from catching up with and meeting people at ACL this year is that people seemed really excited about an additional community forum to Twitter. I think, for slightly different reasons than outlined above -- not as a permanent/neverending conference chat...
@universeinanegg
(btw, would be interested to chat with you about this in more depth at some point! partially from an HCI perspective, in that I'm not sure how often people using these tools actually care about minor details like accuracy in spatial relations or counts of things)

I always travel with a P100 respirator, which cuts out 100% of smells (in addition to nearly guaranteeing I won't get COVID from other people on the plane)
@marty_with_an_e
@tallinzen
I just found a slightly simpler way to get to the login page and remembered this Tweet. If you go to you'll get the login page without having to go through a conference page first. No idea why the login isn't at itself.
@yoavartzi
It was supposed to be a jab at my typos! There was a disclaimer inserted at the very end from ProQuest that any typos are my fault, not theirs :)
@m2saxon
Not so nice when your sacrifices are naught because the AC used ChatGPT to summarize the review thread... š I'm especially disappointed that an AC would do this.
Target is an awful company but this particular one is a great convenience. It brings a lot of foot traffic to the neighborhood, and as someone who has to go to the pharmacy really often, living on top of a CVS is a lifesaver.
@xwang_lk
I'd personally consider an agent that successfully executes some human intent expressed through natural language instructions to be a language agent. Successfully understanding is a form of language use, just at one of the ends and not the other.

To clarify: by "requires" I mean that it's necessary for many examples. Other datasets likely also require it, but not in as many examples. I think the Advising dataset also contains a number of date/time expressions?
@universeinanegg
perhaps also quantifiers? kind of intersects with other things (e.g. negation, counts) and I haven't tested it in a while but I doubt there's consistent precision wrt. something like "all"
also, specific compositions (see attached)
@emilymbender
@daphneipp
I agree the feel would end upĀ different than ACL's RocketChat (probably slower and leaning more social), and maybe would end up quiet unless some community members actively participate early on...
@emilymbender
@daphneipp
... but more of a way to feel connected to the community in a way that Twitter doesn't facilitate (due to Twitter's public, permanent, and less synchronous interface, and many of the other points like topic-specific Slack channels that
@daphneipp
mentionedĀ above).
@srush_nlp
I use Motion (not Notion). I have been wanting software like this since middle school. If you like time blocking, try it out. I can't recommend it enough
@universeinanegg
Yea, but I think what I mean though with this specific example is fidelity in visualizing specified part-attribute relations. Like a blue bird with a black head is different than a black bird with a blue head.

There's other related work that studies how framing questions in different ways with equivalent underlying semantics can also result in very inconsistent behavior:
Though if the underlying semantics change, we'd want model to change to reflect that
