Excited to announce that we’ve added another raffle item to our Christmas Drive raffle! This bottle of Glenfiddich 12 and Chiefs Super Bowl Champion edition Maker’s Mark were donated by a very good friend of mine. EVERYBODY who donates to the 2024 Christmas Dinner Drive is…
The Kansas City Royals just won a game in which:
• Bobby Witt Jr. did not record a hit
• Garrett Hampson started in CF
• Their 5-6-7 hitters went 0-13
• Daniel Lynch pitched in relief
There is a ZERO PERCENT (0%) chance that that happens in 2023.
Progress!

Salvy is 100% getting to 300 and then the Hall of Fame conversations REALLY heat up. If he ends his career on a team that makes the playoffs 2-3 times in 4-5 years…it’s gonna be tough to leave him out.
I am absolutely 100% not implying anything, but Gavin Cross, Drew Waters, and Michael Massey were all pulled from their respective games this evening. That is at least mildly curious and/or concerning at a number of levels.
A) The Chiefs are not going anywhere. They are in the perfect spot. They’ll divorce the Royals and get whatever they want.
B) Here are the options for the Royals, in order:
- try again, with their 💩 together
- NKC
- JOCO
- pay for it yourself
- 50 feet of crap
- Nashville
The broadcast has shown it every night so I know this is nothing new, but the starting rotation’s nightly meetings in the dugout IS SO DAMN COOL!!! That’s outstanding leadership.
Maikel Garcia is currently rated as the best defender in MLB by FanGraphs, in case you were curious as to whether or not last year’s performance was sustainable.
Drew Waters needs to take MJ Melendez’ spot on the roster Friday. MJ’s last 92 PA:
• 10 hits
• .111 BA
• 2 walks (2.2%)
• 29 K (31.5%)
• 3.4% Barrel%
• -16 wRC+
Drew Waters cannot physically be any worse offensively and provides a boost defensively.
I didn’t give Seth Lugo nearly enough credit for how savvy he is on the mound. This dude has been incredible so far, much less his impact on the younger starters. He’s mixing pitches, locating the ball, keeping guys off balance, throwing hard…my goodness.
JJ Picollo just made a point I hadn’t thought about…
22 of KC’s first 35 games are against:
• Baltimore
• HOU
• TX
• Minnesota
• Toronto
That’s 5 teams with playoffs or bust expectations coming into the season. If the Royals can come out of there 15-20 it will be a win.
👀
Salvy is currently rating as the 6th best framing catcher in MLB and is one of 9 catchers to accumulate a “fielding run” early on. He’s also tied for the 2nd best defensive rating among all MLB catchers.
Not sustainable, but definitely a positive development.
Gonna keep an eye on Salvy’s defensive ratings this year. Specifically BP’s framing runs. He’s made a couple of changes that I think will pay dividends for the pitching staff. Obviously it’s early but there’s no reason this isn’t sustainable.
Sources: Cuban prospect and SS switch hitter Yandel Ricardo (16) is expected to sign with the Kansas City Royals for around $2.4 M when a new international signing period opens January 15, 2024.
Ricardo had a pre-agreement with San Diego Padres months ago, but it was canceled.
The Royals being interested in Arraez tells me that they seem to be serious about improving the offense. That’s great, but the clock has to be running out on Adam Frazier and Garret Hampson then. Easy in-house replacements for both that give you a legitimate offensive threat.
I have seen enough to sign an official apology form for my John Schreiber slander earlier this offseason. I was too unfamiliar with his game, apparently. He has been patently absurd and the Royals are 100% not in this position without him.
The 3 most important role players for the Royals this season:
1) Brady Singer
No longer need him to be one of your three best starters. The Royals’ slim chances of winning the Central are pretty significantly hinged on Singer. If your
#4
is 2022 Brady Singer…you’ve got a shot.
I’m seeing a lot of that “playoff” word and I want to make sure we all understand what that’s hinged on, what HAS to happen:
- Lugo builds on his first season as a starter at 34
- Wacha continues to pitch well at 32
- Ragans continues to pitch like a Cy Young
- Singer rebounds
FWIW….
It sounds like this conversation went:
“So, Jesús?”
“We like Vinnie.”
“Mhm…….k thanks.”
If you consider that “discussing” a deal, then sure, but I’m guessing that’s why JJ and co. went back to Sherman and said, “Yeah we’re gonna need another $32M.”
Marcus Stroman should be a Royal next season. There’s not a better fit on the open market right now and there’s a 0% chance that someone offers him so much money that you just have to look elsewhere. Stroman is everything the Royals need right now.
The Royals are indeed interested in Marcus Stroman, as
@JonHeyman
reported, but Kansas City is casting a wide net in its search for pitching. Per sources, the Royals have also had discussions with Lucas Giolito, Michael Wacha and Jack Flaherty.
Cliff notes from a conversation I had with a scout from another team re: Royals MiLB arms:
• Wolters and Mozzicato clearly most upside/talented, Mozzicato’s natural ability is special, just needs refining
• Kudrna next, safer profile, less upside, reminds him of James Shields
The contact play with the infield in is something we don’t do in high school baseball. It’s, very seriously, hilarious to me that a big league team does it every single time.
The Royals are exactly where they needed to be coming out of these first 10 games. Couldn’t have expected any more than 6-4, regardless of how they got there.
Houston is struggling early, then you have six with the Mets and White Sox. 12-7 is very much attainable.
#HEYHEYHEYHEY
The Kansas City Royals are an unmitigated disaster. They don’t deserve a dime of taxpayer money at the moment. This is embarrassing. Arrogant. Selfish…I may have to hop back on the keyboards next week to vent. The entire organization should be embarrassed. Top to bottom.
Five months after narrowing their proposed stadium sites to two finalists, the Royals are quietly discussing in meetings the possibility of an alternative, a third option, pitched to them recently, sources told The Star.
Story:
MJ Melendez is currently rating as the 2nd best outfielder in MLB in terms of his route efficiency. His burst and reaction times are still pretty slow, but the drastic improvement on his route efficiency is a great sign of his development as an outfielder.
I will not overreact to Maikel Garcia’s Spring Training stats. I will not overreact to Maikel Garcia’s Spring Training stats. I will not overreact to Maikel Garcia’s Spring Training stats. I will not overreact to Maikel Garcia’s Spring Training stats. I will not overreact to Maik
Carter Jensen is incredible. 20 years old and absolutely blistering balls at High-A. There’s only 45 qualified 20-year olds above Low-A right now and Jensen ranks:
• 3rd in BB/K
• 6th in ISO
• 1st in wRC+
• 1st in OBP
• 1st in LineDrive%
This was his first AB tonight:
The fact that MLB hasn’t gone to the double base at first base yet is purely stubborn silliness. Who cares what it looks like? Keep the players as safe as humanly possible.
Also, Buxton may have a friendly reminder to be more careful than that coming to him.
Patrick Mahomes is now 12-3 in the playoffs. He has more postseason wins than the:
• Tampa Bay Buccaneers
• Carolina Panthers
• Jacksonville Jaguars
• New Orleans Saints
• Atlanta Falcons
• Arizona Cardinals
• Houston Texans
• Cincinnati Bengals
• Detroit Lions
If tonight was the last night of the Will Smith closer experiment, we’ll have a good sign of progress from Q. This should be an easy decision from here on out.

Would like to publicly thank David Sandlin and his training staff for this video of him hitting *100* mph before I put my rankings out tomorrow. Will adjust accordingly.
The Royals don’t *have* to get off to a good start for this season to wind up a success, but it would obviously help. Anything more than 15 wins in those first 35 would be a GREAT start to a season where…let’s be honest the team has to get close to .500.
Oh my goodness gracious………
Between this and the home plate umpire telling Drew Butera, “I don’t even know who you are,” today, this entire crew needs to be suspended. Fire umpires into the sun.
The Royals’ starting rotation got off to legitimately one of the worst starts in modern MLB history last year. The total and exact opposite this season.
Brian Sweeney deserves a TON of credit, but so do Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo. Instant and immense culture change. Bravo.
The 2024
@Royals
are the first team in *Major League history* whose starting pitchers have recorded ≥ 6.0 innings and ≤ 1 run allowed in 7 of the 1st 9 games.
Nick Loftin is hitting .314 in Omaha with a BB/K >1.00. He’s an on-base machine. The Royals have expressed interest in adding that profile to their lineup. It’s honestly getting weird as to why they won’t just let him play.
I just don’t understand what it is replay officials don’t see that literally everyone else does. How are the officials of billion dollar industries so bad unless it’s semi-intentional? It’s completely befuddling.
Was able to watch the entire game today and Cross looked fantastic. I’m excited again.
That whole offense looks good. Peyton Wilson went DEEP twice today. Vaz looks good. Wallace is on fire…
I’m buying back in to Gavin Cross — especially with the state of the outfield in the organization.
.287/.361/.437, 124 wRC+, .404 BABIP, 8.2 BB% in Double-A.
@royalsminors
and
@aduvall013
have been all over it.
Drew Waters hits a grand slam (1) to right center field. CJ Alexander scores. Devin Mann scores. Nate Eaton scores. - Gwinnett Stripers (6) @ Omaha Storm Chasers (13)
Michael Wacha was my pick to lead the Royals staff in WAR this year. The fact that he’s been basically as good as I thought he’d be & is just the fourth best starter in the rotation is one of the most absurd things to happen in MLB this season. Royals are gonna win the Central.
The Royals announced they and the Kansas City Royals Foundation (formerly Royals Charities) will cover the cost of entrance for anyone visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum during the month of February.
The Blue Jays are a good baseball team and the Royals have guaranteed themselves a split with Ragans on the mound tomorrow looking for a series win. A win gives them a winning home stand vs two of the better teams in the AL. Hard to ask for too much more than that.
#HEYHEYHEYHEY
68 qualified pitchers in MLB and all five Royals starters are in the top-30 for “changeup Stuff+”. The order may surprise you…
10) Brady Singer 114
11) Michael Wacha 110
20) Cole Ragans 102
22) Seth Lugo 99
29) Alec Marsh 90
Right-handed starter Michael Wacha and the Kansas City Royals are in agreement on a two-year, $32 million contract, a source tells ESPN. He gets an opt-out after the first season.
Bobby Witt Jr. is the Most Valuable Player in Major League Baseball. Miss me with any conversations to the contrary. He is single-handedly dragging an entire team to the playoffs.
Carter Jensen looks so good. On an absolute heater to begin the season. Swing looks much better. He’s been more aggressive in the zone. He looks good behind the plate! Bright future for the KC kid.
Angel Zerpa this season:
• 12.1 IP
• 11 H
• 3 BB
• 12 K
• 2.19 ERA
• 1.14 WHIP
Was up to 97 tonight in a very short outing. I am quietly very optimistic this role is going to work for him.
• MJ is actually hitting
• trade for Velazquez’ power potential
• Isbel is playing well
• 1st round pick on Loftin
• trade for Blanco’s tools (speed/defense)
• trade for a former top-30 prospect in baseball
• sign a couple of savvy vets
• 3rd round pick on Gentry
Okay…I love the arm. Two years of control after 2024. Wallace was probably going to find himself in a logjam at 3B and…frankly probably isn’t ever going to be an All-Star.
Wallace AND the pick feels steep…but Harvey is VERY good and has closing experience. Intriguing move.
We have acquired RHP Hunter Harvey from the Washington Nationals for minor-league INF Cayden Wallace and our Competitive Balance A pick.
To make room for Harvey, RHP Nick Anderson has been designated for assignment.
When you have an ace like Cole Ragans, losing streaks never last long. This team is different than they’ve been for the last half decade. This is a lot of fun.

The JJ Wetherholt guide to a pleasant Sunday afternoon.
Step 1: Crush homer
Step 2: Admire homer
MLB's No. 8 Draft prospect watches his 3rd long ball in the past 4 games leave the yard:
🎥:
@WVUBaseball
It was so cool seeing The K packed in October again. Nothing like playoff baseball, man. Can’t wait to see how this front office improves the roster over the offseason. Fully plan on being back again next year.
#HEYHEYHEYHEY
Major League Baseball is rigging the lottery to dissuade tanking. Good for baseball. Bad for your Kansas City Royals. Two massive blows to the Royals farm system in back-to-back years. Cleveland just walked out of here with the
#1
overall pick next summer.
Hot take:
If the Royals can add one more high-leverage reliever, and sneak into the playoffs, they can absolutely beat out the rest of the AL and get to the World Series. They’ve got the defense and starting rotation to get there.
Some quick thoughts on the Columbia Fireflies after their opening weekend:
- Hunter Patteson looked FANTASTIC today. 4 IP, 5 K, 50 pitches, ZERO base runners…
- Danny Vazquez hit .583 over three games and looks every bit the part. He’s filled out and looks outstanding.
Between April 8th of 2014 and July 24th of 2016, Wade Davis threw 167.2 innings in the regular season with an ERA of 0.86 and a FIP of 1.82. 214 strikeouts to just 52 walks in 167.2 IP. Somehow we’ll never appreciate that as the most dominant run in relief history.
My boy has never seen the Royals lose in person. Looking to go 3-0 tonight with “Pole” Reagans on the mound (we’re working on our t’s and c’s 😂). Let’s go Royals!
Bobby Witt Jr. has almost completely closed the gap in fWAR with Gunnar Henderson and is 100% within reach of Aaron Judge. One IL stint or bad week from Judge and Bobby could very seriously lead MLB in fWAR this year.
There’s a STRONG case for him to win MVP even if he doesn’t.
@LaMar_Matt
Right after the starter’s outing ends, all five guys hold court in the dugout. Not in the clubhouse, not after the showers, right there during the game. It’s legitimately very cool to watch.
Michael Massey will not be an everyday big leaguer until he learns some semblance of plate discipline. He’s just about Salvy bad without the mammoth raw power.
Get Nick Loftin up here to spell some of these games for him.

In all seriousness, the Royals still do not anything that remotely resembles an answer in CF if they can’t help fix Kyle Isbel’s swings. Ironically, Isbel has a lot of the same issues Ryan O’Hearn had. Some similar pitch ID qualities too. It’s fixable. Just not sure it happens.
Pratto is 2-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk tonight. No strikeouts. He has completely overhauled his approach. The physical skills were always going to work, now the mental approach is catching up.
This is a beautiful deal all around. Bobby gets an extension somewhere between 7-10 years (assuming those last three are player/mutual options) and takes care of his grandkids’ grandkids. This is an incredible day for baseball, and an even better day for baseball in Kansas City.
