Actually they look like the kids my coworkers and I have helped to get citizenship, earn a high school equivalency degree and go to college while they work 2 jobs keeping NYC running. Probably going to take some jobs for white kids while they are at.

As a white woman, blaming that terrible behavior on the fact their husband is a jerk is letting them off the hook. They behave that way b/c they can. What are the consequences for that behavior. They aren't going to face legal trouble & most times no one puts them in their place.

I think you hit on the point that it isn’t that these play spaces shouldn’t be in a library but if they are, you need the right staff. And most importantly, enough staff. We don’t invest in public services and then blame the services when there are problems.

My kid transitioned this summer. The sweetest thing is that he picked Gabriel as his name b/c it is what his dad and I would have named if he had been born a boy. He remembered us telling him that story so I feel like I just got the son I was always supposed to have.

This is a great thread. While sex trafficking and child porn are definitely a problem it seems like is a lot like the kidnapping scare of the 80s. The problem was real but happening in a very different way than presented in the media.

This is why I think all jobs should just list the salary on the posting. It is the only way for women and people of color to not get screwed and to ensure parity between coworkers. And it says people interviewing for a job that doesn’t pay what they want.

As a recovering alcoholic, who was in a marriage that didn't work out, I was annoyed by his comments. No one is responsible for your drinking or whether u stay sober. Not everyone gets sober and stays sober forever but that is not the fault of a bad marriage, a terrible job, etc.

My mom was carjacked & kidnapped at gun point 20 yrs ago. She survived but had a heart attack the next day. She's had PTSD since. I think about families who lost someone or those who experience gun violence but don't die & how their lives are never the same. And nothing changes.

Is this a rent stablized apartment? You may have recourse with NYS government. I worked for a nonprofit years that got people’s rent reduced by reviewing rent history and illegal increases. One eccentric guy did this work as basically his full time job.

When I got sober in 2003, I was told not to tell doctors because if it went in my chart it could be considered a pre-existing condition or used to deny care. As long as health care is politicized and profitized, there is no trust even if your doctor is amazing.

My problem as someone w/a kid needing these services is how many psychiatrists don’t know what they are doing. I’m a social worker & specifically look for psychiatrists specializing in children & teens & you can’t find good drs. Or the good ones take no insurance & charge $500/hr

As a mom who kid transitioned to a boy last summer, I’ll tell you that no matter how weird it feels your job as a parent is to accept your kid & get some therapy or support so that you can be there for them 100%. Parenthood is all about throwing you things you don’t expect.

Without formula, my twins wouldn't have survived. I had a hospital grade pump, lactation consultant, etc and never could produce more than an ounce or two max. I also has severe postpartum depression which made it difficult to focus on breastfeeding when it wouldn't work.

The whole all adoption is bad thing has gotten out of hand. Many parents can’t care fot their kids and adoption with loving parents who are willing to raise the child with an understanding of their background is better than foster care.

Even worse is there is literally no preparation for what you are going to experience or what shape your body will be in after a c-section. I spent hours in birthing classes but there is nothing on c-sections.

One of the things I’ve learned in my 25 yrs working w/individuals living in poverty, is that it’s a FT job to survive. I have never seen people work harder. There are no physical, emotional or intellectual resources left to focus on the things you need to do to get out of poverty

You can be friendly with people who work for you but not friends. Even asking your staff to hang out for fun can be perceived as a unpaid requirement to keeping your job. If you say no, you get looked at as not being a team player.

Dental care is so fraught. There’s so much stigma about having bad teeth but dental care is outrageously expensive & most insurance if u’re lucky to have it doesn’t cover much. When I worked at a youth dev org our health clinic hired a dentist & many kids had never seen a dentist

Cops are the only group (maybe the military) we don't assume has an agenda. Aside from their violence, they've unionized so that many make 6 figure salaries w/overtime, retire at 55 on a gov't pension for 30 yrs, & work corp security on the side. Only works with lots of violence.

I have a 13 yr old trans son. I emailed the school 2 weeks before school last year & his name was changed on everything. He was asked once what restrooms & locker rooms he wanted to use & that was it. It took 5 minutes and no one has said a word. Doesn’t have to be a big deal.

I love a nice hotel for a few days but VRBO or other rental companies are my go to for longer trips with kids. With kids I like the space, laundry if needed and a kitchen. I will say the fees on rentals have gotten nutty. Cleaning, service, etc. Just give me an all in cost.

As a social worker & nonprofit director, 95% of what I and my organization do would be unnecessary if poor folks just had cash. I know people are trying to help with donations and volunteerism but cash in the hands of the people we are trying to serve would do so much more.
