Handoff is perceived as a single moment in time and a linear process. But in reality, there is no single handoff moment. It's an ongoing collaboration. We needed something that placed designers and developers in the same space where they could collaborate and iterate together.

With Dev Mode, we transformed the Figma editor to cater specifically to developers. The left panel streamlines navigation, only showing the layers you need to focus on, highlighting ready-for-development designs with thumbnails, and calling out essential pages with indicators.

The hurdle, though, was in integrating this novel mode into Figma. Our entry point needed to be intuitive, easy to find, and harmonious with the editor's IA. After several attempts, @ryhanhassan 's expertise, and a Slack thread with ~80 replies, we landed on a toggle for Dev Mode.
