Mostly, transplant cases are done outside the surgery, not because we don’t have the surgeons here, but because with dont have the surgical technologies to do the surgery and to sustain the patient after the surgery. For the surgeons, we have, we just don’t have the facilities.

My consultant was trained in US. He worked for some yrs there but later he came to Ghana. He’s a northerner and said his people are suffering so he came to help. Yeah, once a while he goes to the states for holidays but he’s practicing medicine in Gh. Yes, there are such people

It used to be 7 years in my country, it was reduced to 6 years and now they want to take it back to 7 years . Medicine can’t be done within 4 years. Even 7 years isn’t enough if one really wants to do medicine and do it well. UK must THINK.

The easiest place 1 can practice medicine is de UK. No standards. Anyone can just become a physician thru any route. Consultant PA, wow, who’ll consult them and for what exactly? Elsewhere, there’s no career progression for PAs, the only way they can progress is to enter med sch.

In my country, there are physician assistants who are mainly in rural areas. They provide primary care. In a situation where it’s beyond them, they quickly refer them to senior colleagues (MOs, specialists and consultants). They don’t do anything surgical. They refer surg cases.

My consultant nearly missed a case one time in the ward. During the ward round, he checked the patient and passed, he quickly came back to have a look at the patient again, stood there for about 2 mins and started smiling. He’s been practicing medicine for over 30 yrs.

There’s Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP) which is 4 years, but you can only enter with first degree from any health related programs( nursing, midwifery, pharmacy,medical lab) etc

In medical school, you write two major exams before you graduate as a doctor. Part 1 and Part 2. Both exams are external exams, ie , if you’re in legon medical sch, the exams would be supervised by lecturers from KNUST, UCC , UDS or UHAS. Nurses dnt write such exams

Just this afternoon yiaa, a patient with dilated cardiomyopathy, massive to the extent that the valves can’t even close was rushed in. She had already done the RCG and echo. She came in with sever distress. We referred to KATH cardiology. We called and can you imagine ?
