I could only squeeze 3x Creative Technique out of Manatraders this morning, so I played without the 4th 😅
Free New Year's gift for Standard RCQ gamers!
I wrote an updated Domain guide after my Standard Qualifier Top 8 last week.
Covers sideboarding & general approach vs the most popular decks (I'll add Toxic & Mentor if/when I get chance to test them).
Top 8 in the Standard Qualifier with the best deck. Didn't drop a game across 2 mirror matches - pretty sure Jace, Cut Your Losses etc. are all just bad.
Couldn't quite get there in the quarterfinals vs UW Soldiers. Still, not a bad start to the year.
OK, it took way longer than expected, but I wrote a guide for Standard Temur Lands. Over 4000 words on card choices, sequencing, mulligans, and playing vs hate.
Also, it's free!
Good luck to everyone playing this at the RCs next weekend.
I finished writing an old-school Tournament Report from my
#PTThunder
Top 8!
Wrote it just to record my experiences as much as anything else, but hopefully it also includes some useful insight into the tournament & testing process.
Lost a marathon quarterfinals to
@WanderingOnes
who played masterfully to reverse sweep me in the postboard games. Sad to lose, but what an incredible game to go out with.
GGs, see you at Amsterdam (and Worlds!)

Sean Goddard from the UK wins the Modern portion of the MOCS Season 1 Showcase with Indomitable Creativity, clinching his seat at the next World Championship! His reward:an immediate rematch with Marco Vassallo in Modern for the title of Showcase Champion.
I won this beautiful(?) foil card for finishing in the top 32 at
#PTKarlov
. I would be interested in converting it into money. DMs are open for any offers!
I won another MOCS Open!
Very nice sealed pool, then a pretty medium draft deck, but ran hot to get the 3-0.
Still yet to top 8 a Showcase Challenge, but now 2 for 3 on converting MOCS Open top 8s 🏆
Back from Seattle, slowly recovering from jetlag and the emotional rollercoaster that was

I will write a tournament report in a day or so. For now I just want to say thank-you to my amazing team Worldly Counsel, and congratulations to the PT Champion
@WanderingOnes
!
I couldn't find any decent guides* for Standard Domain before the Showcase, so I made one! It's free, and includes sideboarding notes for 7 key matchups.
*(I'm sure Reid's guide was great, but I don't live in the US so CFB won't let me pay to read it 🙃)
I won the Standard Showcase Challenge with Domain Ramp.
Didn't have time to test, so I netdecked
@Jaberwocki
and added a couple of 🦈.
My only regret is not realising this deck was broken in time to register it for Worlds.
Couldn't get the trophy this time, but still completely elated to make it to Worlds by finishing 2nd in the best tournament in Magic!
Congratulations to the MOCS Champion
@IsThatTrueHero
🏆🇮🇹
I wrote a (free) deck guide for Legacy Mississippi River! It includes useful pro tips like why you should actually play with 4 copies of Creative Technique instead of 3 🤔
Won the Legacy Challenge with Mississippi River.
I could only squeeze 3x Creative Technique out of Manatraders this morning, so I played without the 4th 😅
I thought we said no leaking til tomorrow? 😮
I'm not on the team deck this time though. Pretty sure this is broken now that I've finally solved the Rhinos matchup.🤫🦏
Rallied back at the end to finish 10-4-2 at
#PTMH3
, good for top 32 and another foil Wrenn and Six!
MH3 limited was fantastic to test and play, and I managed another undefeated (5-0-1) draft record.
Modern was exhausting. I can't imagine Nadu survives very long after this.

Redeemed myself from the 1-2 yesterday, going 3-0, 6-0 with easily the strongest OTJ deck I've ever had.
During testing we identified BW as a powerful and underdrafted archetype, and it paid off big time!
#PTThunder
Won the Vintage Challenge!
Decided to try out Beseech for the first time to see what all the hype was about. Turns out it's pretty good!
I'm not an experienced Vintage player, but I've drafted enough storm decks in cube to know how to kill on turn 1 with Yawgmoth's Will. 🌩️🌩️
Finished 6-2 day 1 of
#PTKarlov
.
Sad to lose the last round, but it's a good record and I'm excited to be battling (and drafting!) again tomorrow.
Also, very hyped for Lotus teammate
@iitsAdro
crushing his first PT!
Undefeated (8-0-2) in the
@4Tournaments
489-player Modern main event, for top 8 and €1K!
Creativity is still very good. Jury's out on the angels, but I like them so far.
2 MOCS Open top 8s in 2 days, and this time I didn't miss!🏆🥳
Sealed pool was great, found some really tight lines to win games, and then drafted a much better aggro deck than yesterday.
6-2 in the Arena Qualifier Day 2.
Not counting my chickens just yet, but I'm told this is usually good enough to qualify for the
@MTG_Arena
Championship.🤞🏆
I won the
@AxionNow
Mega Modern yesterday, picking up 3 Revised duals and a crate of Kamigawa! 🏆
Had an all-round great weekend. As much as I enjoy FNMs and online play, I have sorely, sorely missed big paper tournaments. Looking forward to the next!
6-2 and top 16 at the
@NRGSeries
10K with stock Proctor Lotus.
Event was well-run and had a great atmosphere. It was definitely worth taking the day off from in-house PT testing to go and play.
Lost two heartbreaking win-and-ins at
#PTLOTR
, finishing 11-5 (and missing top 16 for maximum feel-bads). I did all I could; now onto Worlds.
On the plus side, Team Worldly Counsel absolutely crushed it, with
@CCalcano
@PivoUlivo
and
@dominharvia
all top 8!
Top 8 in the Standard Qualifier with the best deck. Didn't drop a game across 2 mirror matches - pretty sure Jace, Cut Your Losses etc. are all just bad.

I am officially a
@MagicOnline
Creator! 🥳
Only started making content very recently, so I was not at all sure I'd get in, but MTGO is fantastic and I'm excited for this opportunity. Look forward to a lot of written content (and some streams😱) coming soon.
I have been back home from PT Chicago for a few days, and have now (mostly) recovered from the usual post-travel fatigue and jetlag 😴
This was a fantastic trip, way beyond my expectations. I thought I'd just do a quick thread recapping some of the highlights: 1/8
Finally submitted my decklist, after changing decks maybe half a dozen times this week 😅
Dinner was a welcome change of pace from all the decklist decisions. I particularly enjoyed the fried cuttlefish (basically fish & chips 🇬🇧🇵🇹?)
Last dinner before decklist submission for

.
Happy with how we worked with

Homebound tomorrow after an amazing week in Barcelona for

.
Ups and downs: so close to making my first Top 8, but still had an absurd run after a 3-3 start to lock invites to the next 2 PTs. An absolute pleasure to work with Team Worldly Counsel once again.
I just want to highlight just how big this will be for my pet deck in Legacy (Mississippi River). It might be worse than the actual cascaders at starting a chain, but it's no worse at continuing one, making this an entirely maindeckable answer to Lavinia, Magus and the like.
Wrote a quick article on my deckbuilding for the MOCS Open.
Even though we're done with MKM as a format now, this is more generally a breakdown of my overall process, and how to effectively build a Sealed pool with 5-colour bombs. Enjoy!
3-0ed my day 2 draft with a decent GW deck. No bombs but a solid curve and double lion umbra. Also picked up a stamped Ugin's Labyrinth for value 😅
Now 7-3-1, ready to activate shuko a few hundred more times.
I have 5

120 play point codes to give away!
To enter, follow me & comment here predicting the top 3 most played decks at RC Naples this weekend, in order.
Winners drawn from any *correct* predictions made before Saturday (if <5 correct then the rest at random).
Once again, I have scraped through to day 2 on a 4-3-1 record.
I'd love to 8-0 day 1 sometime, but I'm honestly just happy I get to draft again 🙂
#PTMH3
Submitted my
#PTThunder
list this morning, complete with a literal last-minute change, and then finally managed to win a testing house draft after getting farmed all week. Feeling good about this one 🙂
I am playing in this!
Historic is a wild format and we had almost no time to try and solve it post-MH3. That said, I'm happy with the list we arrived at, and looking forward to battling this weekend.
Looking back on my Magic 2023 goals to see how I did!
Definitely a good year overall - missed a few, but also massively overshot on my PT target. I guess 6.5/10 if we're counting?
Wrote some MTG 2023 goals on a whim a few weeks ago; posting them here for accountability.
Basically, I'm hoping to play more types of competitive events, learn new decks, and make new friends! Let's see how it goes.
Had an unfortunate Sunday afternoon at RC Naples, going 9-2 into 9-6.
Still, it's been a great weekend (with multiple teammates qualifying!), and now I get to explore Italy for a week & then play some Eternal at
@4Tournaments
. 🍝🇮🇹
7-2 and into Day 2 of
#LECAthens
.
Quite happy with my play so far, though my inexperience playing Lotus in paper led to some messy board states and loose post-Ultimatum sequencing.
Definitely having more fun than if I'd stuck with mono- green!
I realise I haven't tweeted much this week - been a bit ill, but mostly recovered in time to play the Pro Tour today!
2-0-1 in the draft with a sweet Esper pile. Now time to see if Nadu really is the best deck. 🐦🧙♂️
Rollercoaster of a day at
#PTThunder
. Had a rough start with my first ever 1-2 PT draft, and then an exhausting slog through the standard rounds. Will post draft deck later.
In the end I just barely won my win-and-in to make Day 2 at 4-3-1! Very happy to get to draft again. 🙂
Top 8 in the Standard Showcase Qualifier.
I didn't have much time to test, but correctly predicted a UWx-heavy metagame and made some sensible changes to my list with help from
@CKikidis
.
I am determined to play a lot more of these in 2024 and make it back to the MOCS 🔥
After a weekend of underwhelming Limited results, I decided to stay up late and top 4 a Standard Challenge to cheer myself up.
Same list as the MOCS, deck is still broken. I beat BR Cascade in QF then lost to it in SF. It's a tough matchup, and I want to work on my plan for it.
Won the
@AxionNow
sealed RCQ (109 players), for RC Athens qualification and £200!
Sealed pool had some very strong Grixis cards, and then the best colours were open for a straightforward top 8 draft.
Split top 4 of the
@AxionNow
Mega Modern for 10 boxes!
Played Creativity with Preordain. Not yet sure if it's worth the slots; felt pretty medium today.
Also, after playing vs 0 Tron at the PT, I finally got to use my team's sweet anti-Tron 🐘🐘🐘 tech to win the quarterfinals!
Worlds list submitted.
Average Standard testing experience: we put a ton of focused work into the format, and then decided all our conclusions were wrong about 10 hours before deck registration! 😅
Regardless, I like my deck. See you on Friday!
Split finals of the Modern Challenge with trusty Yawgmoth.
Pick Your Poison has been nice, though I sorely missed Rec Sage in my game vs Hardened Scales. Might put that back in over the Force.
3-1 in both Arena Open Day 2 drafts, for $1000.
Draft 1 was average UB. Often sided into the white splash for Lawbringers, & likely should have started them despite no fixing.
Draft 2 was a respectable BW pile, again with Dirge + Lawbringer. My favourite combo of the set😍
Had a tough draft, but escaped with a 2-1 to start Day 2 of
#PTKarlov
. Overall record so far is 8-3, which I think means I'm locked for Amsterdam via AMPs!
(Bonus picture of judge-issued proxies for my horrendously curved foils 😅)
I am in Naples for the

Just submitted my list, planning to spend tomorrow walking around Pompeii whilst thinking about sideboard mapping 🤔
Sat at

Top 4 in the 462-player Super RCQ to qualify for RC Lille.
Sealed deck was easily the best Yorion deck I've had. Should have been -Ergamon -Seedcore, +2 white creatures.
Draft was weird, could have had a busted RB deck but ended with a medium green pile. Got there though!
I won the
@AxionNow
64-player RCQ!
Played mono-green, lost to
@MattBrown_MTG
on Phoenix R1, but then dodged most of the bad matchups afterwards.
List: (based on one I saw
@MrChecklistcard
tweet)
I'll be playing Lotus tomorrow at
#LECAthens
. Not convinced the meta will be friendly to it, but it's a sweet deck and I've had a ton of fun learning it over the past two weeks.
Excited to get some turn 3 wins!
7-2 to make Day 2 of the
@MTG_Arena
Qualifier. Wasn't sure my pool would get there in such a bomb-heavy format, but Stoic Sphinxes carried me.
So far I'm liking the new structure a lot, particularly since I'd have died at 5-2 in the old system 😅
Pool:
10-4-1 at
#LECAthens
, for 30th place and a redundant PT invite.
Lotus was fun and powerful. 3 Satyrs were great, and helped me go 3-0 vs Spirits!
Very grateful to
@AlexRohanmtg
,
@Bob449449
and
@ArchaeusDota
for their help learning & tuning the deck.

I love the whole PT testing process, but the night before decklist submission is always a bit stressful! Glad to be done with it and back to drafting.
7-1 in the Arena Open (Bo1) with Nine Lives.
Crushed some goblins, and also won 2 (very weird) mirror matches somehow. Thanks for the list
@urlichmtg
!

Got the rank
#1
!!! Only took 1 win from
#2
in the end, but that was the culmination of a winstreak since
#80
or so!
Very happy to finally get the top position after trying a couple of times in previous seasons
Thanks again to
@WanderingOnes
for the list!
@fireshoes
@Team_Axion
It's been a great week testing with some of the best in the game, both old and new. Excited to put our draft strategies and constructed tech into action tomorrow!
#PTLOTR
Tried out
@MartinJuza
's new Winota list today and went 26-3 into top 10 mythic, losing twice to the mirror!
Much better than the other Winota builds I've tried, and feels well-positioned at the moment for sure.
List & stats:
Tomorrow I am heading to the European Regional Championship in Ghent. 🚄🇧🇪🍻
This is my first big event of the year, after a full 4 months break since Worlds. Looking forward to it!
It also means I am still in the Kai Budde Player of the Year race.
Granted, my victory scenario could be best described as "I top 2 Worlds and Simon misses his flight" 😅
Still, this is my first time playing all 3 PTs in a season, and I'm proud to be in contention at all. 3/12
1-4 and dead at
#MTGWorlds
, after a dismal 1-2 draft and a couple of rough Standard rounds.
Disappointed, but still an unreal experience to play my first Worlds. It won't be my last.
Rooting for the surviving Worldly Counsel players!
Thanks to our sponsor
@veve_official

Just hit Rank 1 Mythic Limited on Arena.
It's been a while since I last tried. Drafted a lot of Shadows Remastered, which is still fun, then a little bit of ONE to prep for the MOCS Opens.
