This black bear was spotted in Kingsport, TN this week.
He made his way around Preston Forest all night earlier this week. He knocked over many trash cans to fill up since nothing out there is growing to eat yet.

A massive 8.2 earthquake occurred at 4:31 AM eastern time about 350 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. Tsunami Warnings in effect for southern Alaska and British Columbia. Tsunami Watch for the West Coast of the US.
A rare "moondog" over Damascus, VA last night.
These are similar to sundogs, but less common. They are created by the ice crystals in the high clouds.

Here's my EARLY first call snow map for Sunday & Monday (12/10/18). Totals in the NE TN valleys will heavily depend on how much rain/sleet mixes in. I'm most concerned about heavy, wet snow across much of SW VA & the TN/NC mountains. Many updates to come!

HEADS UP
The afternoon Euro model came in with more snow for the entire region Saturday night into Sunday. Other models are not as high.
I plan to make my first snowfall call on Thursday, but for now, plan to check back on this potential winter storm for Super Bowl Sunday.
An EF-1 tornado has been confirmed in far northern Avery County, NC.
The NWS says it touched down in the Whaley area, near Beech Mountain around 1 AM Tuesday.
Path was 2.6 miles long. It was 35 yards wide.
This is only the 2nd twister in the tornado database for Avery County.

The northern lights MAY be visible as far south as TN & NC tonight into early Monday (may be on the horizon north of the green line).
The overhead aurora is possible in the green band.
Best chances are away from city lights, especially in the northern sky.
Some viewers received more hail accumulation yesterday than sleet/snow accumulation all winter!

There was a 1" snowfall difference at WCYB (1.5") and my house (2.5" about 225 feet higher). I only live a few miles away!
Same trend with my brother and my parents in Knoxville. They live a few miles apart, but my brother saw about 1" more (he is 250 feet higher).
This barn was blown down during high winds on Tuesday!

A 4.4 earthquake occurred about 50 miles southwest of Knoxville at 4:14 Wednesday morning.
It was a shallow quake, making it easier to feel.
