SOME NEWS: I’m writing a novel! This is a small moment from the work-in-progress. I’d love it if you read it.
Huge thanks to

HAPPENING NOW: protesters have occupied Jackson square park. The gates are locked shut and police are present. Balloons and letters from a proposal earlier are now separating the two lines.
A couple of weeks ago, I read something about the benefits of a daily nap. So I’ve started taking a 15-20 minute nap every day and here are some of what’s happened.
🧵:
HAPPENING NOW: Jewish groups holding a Seder on Poydras, condemning the genocide in Gaza, refusing to drink or feast in solidarity with the millions starving in Gaza.
Last week,
@SenJohnKennedy
’s racist comments about Mexicans drew international attention. The former-Democrat from Louisiana’s accent has been the subject of ridicule and debate, but is it genuine? I put together a little explainer for
@guardian
Seems a good time to remind people that after Hurricane Ida,
@StormyDaniels
stayed and started up a rag-tag mutual aid group, using her name and resources to raise money and feed people in New Orleans. Very cool to interview her for
@antigravitymag
.
NEW: This summer, we reported on the contents of a controversial database used to train generative AI products from Meta, Bloomberg, and others. Many people requested an ability to search it. Today,
@_alexreisner
delivers.
suspending the "Students for a Democratic Society" and saying most protestors were not affiliated with the university, but then suspending students of your university because they were part of the protest is certainly something!
Some news! Excited to announce that I’m joining the NPR team in the Gulf States Newsroom as a reporter covering health equity! Very excited for this opportunity, and can’t wait to get to work telling impactful stories from the Gulf Coast (always looking, DMs open)

'Lambert is a soft-spoken, bearded 34-year-old who grew up in the small town of Orcutt in Santa Barbara County, California, where he was voted “Most Bashful” in junior high school.' This piece is a master class in economically setting a scene. Great stuff!

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, some residents who stayed behind like,
@StormyDaniels
and
@jordaneworleans
, formed mutual aid groups that provided critical supplies to residents. Read about their incredible work in my latest for
@antigravitymag
If you’ve been wondering what the truth is behind the
@faubourgbeer
announcement that they would be stopping production at the New Orleans facility, here’s a brief video explainer, along with a link to the full article I did for

my daughter’s 5th grade class has a “classroom economy” where they have jobs and earn fake money for activities and stuff.
They haven’t gotten paid in a month so she’s organizing a strike.
I have never been more proud.
Question for writers: when you’ve got a piece finished, do you blast it out to any journal that *might* be interested or do you send it to 1 or 2 that you think it’s perfect for?
I was a freshman at LSU when I got Dayna. I very much did not have my shit together. But she was always there, through every high and low.
When I went back for my master’s, she would sleep at my feet while I worked.
Today, she’s still at my feet as I defend my thesis.
Have a new fiction piece out today in
@havehadhavehad
This story was inspired by bedtime and the never ending questions from my five-year-old that in the moment seem never ending, but when they’re gone, I’ll wish were never ending.
Good morning! Six years ago today, it was a Wednesday, it was raining, and
@dyl_evers
and I woke up and decided to skip work and get married. The secretaries were our witnesses and the judge played church bells with a remote control and it was perfect. Happy anniversary, my love.
this is the kind of shit that makes indie lit so much fun. none of us are getting paid. we're all ripping open our hearts banging out 50-word earnest death screeches while we're on the clock at work and none of this will matter soon but nothing ever did and yet we screech
Dropping unvaxxed 8 y.o. off at school and she says, “Dad I don’t want to do this.”
What I wanted to say was, “Me neither, sweetheart. Let’s go get donuts instead.”
What I really said was, “Everything is going to be okay, sweetheart.”
You know, like a liar.
tell me a story
seven years ago. we woke up and decided to get married. today we woke up, got two kids to school, fed the dogs, got some coffee and a poem. happy anniversary my love!
Friday fiction acceptance from
@thecitronreview
? Uh, yes please! First acceptance of the year and my submission queue is officially empty.
2022 LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO
Full disclosure: I reached out to
@AccidentalCajun
thinking he might be good for this story and he immediately said “nah bruh you need to talk to my friend Bunny” and he couldn’t have been more right. That’s centering the right voices right there

In February 2022,

Anne Rice was a real one. Super nice. Knew how to party. Supportive of young writers in the city. Inspiring to so many more. What more could a writer hope for? Rest well, Queen.
I’ve been taking Spanish lessons for a few months and today I’m gonna take my daughter (who is fluent from going to immersion school since K-5) to a Mexican restaurant and we’re gonna order in only Spanish. Wish me luck! I’m nervous!
Small clip from my interview with
@StormyDaniels
for

. Go read about a few of the mutual aid groups that stepped up when public officials failed to adequately care of the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Ida

alas, I did not make the recent

cut, BUT, I did finish (or at least work on lol) a piece I may have not otherwise found the time for. That’s the magic of HAD for me
Today’s my birthday and I’d love it if you dropped a link to a story that you love. Could be yours, someone else’s, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, journalism, bathroom stall, the back of a napkin, whatever—send me something that moves you.
Today we’re at a motel in Demopolis, Alabama for an NPR story on rural healthcare access, and we got 2,069 words on the novel.
and we crossed 42k total!!

nostalgia is reaching beneath the sofa all the way back to the wall with the end of the vacuum cleaner hose and snagging a ball of fluff that isn’t fluff but the last, final threads of fur from a dog you suddenly realize you haven’t cried about in a while
keep thinking about how this works as a kinda fun prompt (itself borne out of an "eskimo have 50 words for snow, feel like Americans should have 50 words for nostalgia" tweet "prompt" from me (Aaron))
write your own "50 words for nostalgia" and we'll RT them?
I made sure I sat next to her in an American Lit course. Had a huge crush. When we later were in the same novel writing class together,
@thejsdavis
put us in the same group and we spent a semester writing together and reading and critiquing each other’s work.
It’s career day at my kid school and my son’s best friends dad works for a food distribution company and brought snacks. Okay Zach, gauntlet thrown. I’m putting the kids on All Things Considered
