If the point of the tax is to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, why do you justify it as a welfare payment? And how can it work to reduce carbon use if most people financially gain by the greater use of fossil fuels?

The carbon tax is on inelastic demand, meaning the tax won't reduce consumption; people still have to heat their homes & drive to work. The rebate doesn't cover anyone's annual tax payment, meaning the poor are better off without the tax. Simple.

The thing about global warming is that it has to be global. Local heat waves are normal & prove nothing. The global average temperature today is 14.15C, same as it was in 1999. There's only so much heat to spread around; it's just a question of where.

That top squiggle is from 2014, when CO2 was 415 ppm. The bottom one is 2023, with CO2 at 423 ppm. So, a difference 8 ppm takes you from the top to the bottom of the graph. Climate science is full of scandalous assertions like that.
