Earlier this summer I began noting the troublesome spike in atmospheric methane readings from Barrow AK. Someone commented they were likely in error. Nope. These record high readings over 2000 ppb are real and part of a record spike up in Arctic methane levels this year.

An extreme heatwave in @Siberia this summer created new methane “blowout” craters from rapidly thawing permafrost. What I hadn’t seen before were photos of pre-blowout mounds where the pressure from released methane expands the ground before the blowout. From @siberian_times

Methane concentrations over the past 10,000+ years of the Holocene. I extended it a bit off the top of the graph to more accurately reflect where we are in 2023. This spike is all about the burning and extraction of fossil fuels, which would include any feedback effects.
