IMO common core is intuitive, just not for people who didn’t learn it.
All it’s saying is, you can solve 8+9 as 10+7 because:
8+9 -> (8+2)+(9-2) -> 10+7
or
9+8 -> (9+1)+(8-1) -> 10+7
Math is intuitive in bases.
Similar to how algebra is done (eg “divide both sides by x”).
