Sadly, a classic example of proving the whistleblower's point. No lessons learned. Diversity of thought and free speech suffer as a result.

This was always my concern a few years ago when certain politicians shrugged off statue-topplers and vandals because the underlying politics meshed with theirs. Inevitably leads to major problems when the facts and ideologies shift a bit.

I think this impression comes from memories of Beto and the fact that he became a punchline in conservative circles. Although those memories are intertwined with Cruz, that should not be confused with the *separate* issue of Cruz' potential vulnerability, as you point out.

My mom still has the Maytag washer and dryer my family bought in 1981. Five years ago, they needed some very minor repairs. Mom asked the repairman about maybe buying a new set, since they're so old. Response: "Absolutely not. Hold on to these as long as you can."

Amen. My grandfathers both served in the Pacific. Both said Truman absolutely made the right call, and that, had he not elected to use atomic weapons, more people on *both* sides would have died.

Same. People obviously have a higher "ceiling" (sentience and all that). But, sight unseen, I'd choose spending an hour with a dog I've never met over spending an hour with a person I've never met.
@JonahDispatch
How these things go:
1. It isn't happening, and conservatives are ridiculous for saying that it is.
2. SOMETHING is happening, but conservatives are lying about what it is.
3. It is happening, and it's good, actually, and conservatives are evil to fight it.
We're in phase 3 now.

Just horrendous for someone like this to see the First Amendment as a "challenge" and not a blessing, especially in the context of a news organization, which obviously benefits directly from the rights secured by the First Amendment. Thank goodness for that "trickiness!"
