I once submitted a paper to a US journal from the UK and, because of the time difference, according to the time stamp on the email it was desk rejected 3 hours before I submitted it ...
I once submitted a paper and immediately cracked open a beer to celebrate. It was desk rejected before I was even done drinking the beer. Was eventually accepted elsewhere and is currently my most highly cited paper.
In the spirit of communicating research groups' outputs for 2018, here's ours:
23 paper rejections
3 grant rejections
2 prize nomination rejections
7 cakes turned out all wrong
relegated 2 divisions on Fifa
Bring on 2019!
@joshraclaw
Important question. Does The Hulk also have those 7 PhDs or is it generally accepted that your qualifications don't transfer when you transform?
Next year our Unit

Academic life provides many moments of joy but few surpass the feeling of elation when a 1.5 hour meeting is unexpectedly cancelled in the middle of a busy day ...
Recent sobering meta-analysis providing no support for mindfulness based interventions for acute-phase ‘common mental health problems’. Maybe worth remembering that MBCT was originally developed as a secondary prevention for depression, where the evidence seems stronger.
Deeply honoured and humbled to be elected as a Fellow of

I'm very much looking forward to taking an active role in the Academy's many fantastic initiatives.
Large scale (N=1868) machine-learning study reveals very poor performance – 61% – in a binary discrimination of depression/no depression, from MRI data. Suggests that the many smaller N studies with much higher predictive power are likely inflated. Not surprised ...
Diagnosis of major depression from structural MRI by machine-learning. Sobering result: 61% accuracy with N=1868
Mimicked smaller studies by subsampling reveals strong effect of training AND test size. Even with N~100, estimated accuracies vary by >20%

Bill was a mentor and a friend. He shaped the way I think about so many things. I will miss this thoroughly decent and humble man. It was a privilege to know him. Thank you Bill for all of the good you brought to the world.
We are so sad to hear about the death of Professor Bill Yule. He made enormous contributions to clinical psychology as a discipline & to training. He was the embodiment of a scientist-practitioner. He will be deeply missed. His famiy are very much in our thoughts at this time.

Embarrassingly, I once submitted a Ms to the office of a prestigious journal in New York from the UK and got an emailed rejection timed 3 hours before my submission (due to the time difference). I was rejected in advance.
I was once on talk radio participating in a phone-in from listeners about clinical psychology issues. I was introduced as 'Doug Leach' and the presenter kept calling me 'Doug'. It was strangely liberating – I could say whatever I wanted and Doug would take the heat ...
People often misspell my name. So much so that I’ve taken out aliases with the misspelling for my email in grad school and would commonly get emails there...from my program.

In 1665 Cambridge University closed because of plague. Isaac Newton retreated to rural Lincolnshire. During his 2 years in lockdown he worked out calculus, the true meaning of colour, gravitation, planetary orbits & the 3 Laws of Motion. Will 2020 be someone’s Annus Mirabilis?
