MLB FA Mike Mayers came into gym on December 4th and on top of throwing harder in general, has done somewhat of an arsenal re-vamp as well FF CT SL --> SW CH --> SP Lemme explain

In AAA in 2023, Jared Solomon averaged 94.6. A far cry from the 96-98 he would sit in 2019-20, which ended up in his release What happened? Forced mechanical changes sapped the velo He came in to assess at Driveline on Aug 9th, & the difference since has been night/day

Driveline athlete @MitchMaurer6 came in and assessed on June 28, topping out at 85.6 MPH. He then re-tested in the lab about a month and a half later on August 18, now topping out at 90.8 MPH. Lets dive into why we were able to see this drastic change in velocity📈

In our athlete meeting, we IDed that 1 of the things that got him "out of sync" was generating more VB on the FB With the cues of "get on top" and "stay behind," this caused him to lose linear direction towards the plate and velo down the bump Left (2020/98) Right (2023/93)

The road to fixing this started with pivot picks, where re-mapping the torso tilt/arm slot was crucial Staying over the lead leg with upper half/minimizing lateral tilt & therefore train the arm slot to get to more of that natural 3/4 like in 2019-2020

With his natural slot being from lower 3/4, this was something that he wasn't used to To get "up top/behind," how he accomplished that was by excessive torso tilt towards first base This in turn took away from his back side drive/cut off stride Left (2023) Right (2020)

Goes to show that you don't have to be elite at everything to throw 🧀 Some metrics carry more weight, but being able to ID pros/cons is huge for an athlete's development. Giving them applicable cues to work with could be the difference in seeing actual results!

With the heater, it's a doozie Typically w/ righty four seamers you'll see both positive VB/HB Julian typically gets 19-21' VB on the heater, but the key here is the HB As a natural supinator, Julian has the propensity to cut the ball Which is completely fine

Def sitting lower into the glute/driving off that backside more. Likely helps with any jumpyness..could result in more efficient COG velo Not relying on glove arm to aid torso rotation. Shortening that up (my guess) inadvertently generated more efficient torso rotation

From the two posts above, the main takeaways are that: Against righties, Touki mostly relies on the SI & CB. Spots the SI to both sides Against lefties, the CB is still there. However, the SI usage drops in the place of the 4FB. Also makes an effort to throw it inside

However, if we could throw this only about 2 ticks harder, the Stuff+ on the pitch would go from 77 to 101 (about league average) Considering this is something Julian is working on in general, I'm confident the changes we're looking for will happen sooner than later✅👀

Something to use the same way he uses the SI against righties would be huge IMO Having a quality/harder pitch other than the straight 4FB for lefties could help neutralize them more effectively To remain a starter, a change like this is needed, but doable

Luckily, Toussaint is still in the earlier stages of his career in terms of age/service time + a fresh start with the Angels Could end up making a difference Heat maps provided by @SavantTips

All in all over the CWL, he finished with an absurd 21 IP / 2 ER / 37 K's We know this probably isn't sustainable. However, he used remote training to the fullest extent and got results Also, he secured a contract with the Empire State Greys in the Frontier League💯

As a starter tho, u gotta be able to get oppo sided hitters out too Against lefties, we see a change in usage/location as well - SI (.828 xSLG / 19.5%) - CB (.181 xSLG / 29%) - SP (.195 xSLG / 37.3%) - FB (.331 xSLG / 14.2%) 4 seam map against lefties⬇️
