Cars are not a "symbol of freedom" -- they're an albatross around our collective necks. Expensive, space-wasting, polluting, unsafe, and burdensome. "Freedom" is not needing a car to live your life. We should stop designing our cities around them.
I am proud to endorse

Our housing crisis is exacerbated in part due to restrictive and unsustainable land use policy that is exclusionary by design and ruinous to environmental and economic sustainability. This looks like car-dependent suburban sprawl.

I cannot politely express how I feel about this level of detachment from reality. We've been warned about an eviction crisis for months and nothing has been done.
Jared Polis yesterday, explaining why Colorado no longer has an eviction moratorium: "People generally should be back at work and earning money."

today: Colorado's unemployment rate went *up* last month and remains above 15% in five counties.

Now think about all the mixed-use housing, retail, and other services we could use that space for and how that would impact our local economy, air quality, and quality of life.

I will be introducing an ordinance prohibiting camping in the City of Aurora on Thursday. The proposal is already drafted but I want to work with our City Attorney's office to make sure… (1/3)
Our conservative majority just voted to set $6M on fire in the form of no-strings-attached "retention" bonuses to ONLY our police department. To say nothing of dispatchers or our firefighters.

In

(and in most cities in North America) the overwhelming majority of land is restricted to R-1 (single family detached) housing. This is the single most inefficient way to use our land and leads to high infrastructure maintenance and even higher housing costs.
It will never cease to disappoint me how people intentionally misrepresent housing first policy and ignore the prevalence of addiction issues among housed people. These folks are working overtime to moralize about homelessness rather than solve it.

Nope. It's always been a bad faith attack against Sanders. They can't go after him for anything so they're trying to make hay out of his supporters. The desperation is palpable.
In Colorado, this problem is exacerbated by the thirsty green lawns that accompany this kind of development. Beyond the manicured lawns and lush park you see golds, yellows, and browns -- what Colorado is supposed to look like. What our climate can naturally sustain.
Houston's approach has a higher rate of success while costing less than anything we've done in the metro. Their results stem from regional cooperation and commitment to a shared strategy. We can do the same thing here, and I hope we return with the political will to do so.
Why Aurora officials are headed to Houston in hopes of finding solution to rising homelessness. The delegation also includes elected leaders from Denver, Arapahoe County and Adams County.

And finally, housing. This bill will help with--but not solve--our affordability crisis. We need social housing, land banking, gap funding, CLTs, etc., to make housing truly affordable. But the bill will make it easier to build 15-minute neighborhoods throughout the metro.

Can we ban fracking, help municipalities combat sprawl by incentivizing density, make public transportation planning a required part of growth rather than an afterthought, and prohibit non-native flora for landscaping just to start? Happy to help make this happen.
Senate Bill 213’s first committee hearing is today! The Local Government & Housing Committee will vote to decide if SB23-213 moves forward.
Here’s why I support this land use bill, which will make it easier to address our housing & climate crises in
#AuroraCO
& the rest of CO:
I support SB23-213. A 🧵
Our housing crisis is exacerbated in part due to restrictive and unsustainable land use policy that is exclusionary by design and ruinous to environmental and economic sustainability. This looks like car-dependent suburban sprawl.
This is a must-read 🧵 if you want to understand why Republicans in
#AuroraCO

18 days left to vote in
#Election2023
.
The Aurora, CO City Council made moves to eliminate the Aurora Municipal Public Defender. They claim its about saving money. In reality, it is entirely about eliminating an office that uncovers systemic abuses and stops their mass incarceration
A Thread
I bring this up because of our water crisis. In
#AuroraCO
, nearly half of our water supply is used to grow a crop we can't eat: grass. This water is pumped over the mountains from places like the Spinney Reservoir at great expense to our residents, and it is very much finite.
When I plead for more regular people getting into politics, this is what I mean. If you're passionate enough to get active, champion causes, and drag your elected officials until they do better (or get beat): your country needs you.
"Do good. Seek justice. I'll see you at work."
It’s official, I’m running for Congress.
You’ve inspired me, to jump in the race for La.’s 2nd congressional district to go fight for THE PEOPLE. If we come together around a shared vision for progress we will win.
Let’s make change happen TOGETHER.
Better for air quality, better for fuel economy, tamps down on road rage by keeping people moving, cheaper + safer than signalized intersections, and they provide places for public art. What's not to love? More of these coming soon in

You know how you eliminate panhandling?
Housing people. Making sure that if they work they earn enough to actually cover their needs. Spending time lobbying our federal officials to fix our embarrassing "healthcare" system so that people don't have to do this or use GoFundMe.
I’m concerned about the growing aggressiveness of some of the solicitations/panhandling on street corners, medians, and in the streets and I’m researching what other municipalities have done to address this issue from a safety perspective. (1/2)

Unaffordable housing is a direct result of poor public policy, from exclusionary land use to a lack of social housing. In 21 days,
#AuroraCO
can choose a different path. If you want mixed-use, mixed-income developments, inclusionary zoning, and social housing, I'm your guy.
This is a sobering analysis that every Coloradan in charge of land use & housing policy should pin to their wall & use as a rallying cry to get moving on housing policy reform. The answers to stem this tide are known to us - we simply have to enact them.
And we will in
#AuroraCO
.
Livable cities are more resilient, vibrant, safer, and sustainable than the traditional sprawling pattern of development. We deserve better than the status quo.
Walkable, mixed-use communities aren't confined to just big cities. We can build them in suburban and rural areas as well by reforming zoning and parking laws!
(Mount Gretna, PA)
They say “We can’t do that. We’re not Amsterdam.” You respond “Amsterdam wasn’t always like that either,” showing before & after transformations illustrating that cities we admire made CHOICES. They make more tired excuses. Don’t accept them. (1e van der Helststraat, 1978 & 2005)

May evidence-based policymaking win the day. 🙏🏼
It bears repeating that pitting the economy against public health is a conscious policy decision by federal lawmakers. It does not have to be this way. That said, this is unconscionable, especially as the new strain of COVID is in the state.
#COVID19
I woke up thinking about this after last night's
#AuroraCO
mayor/council forum. We're not going to widen our way out of congestion, whether it's Peña Blvd or Gun Club Road. We need to invest in infrastructure and services that move people reliably, comfortably, and safely.
We’ve understood this for a REALLY long time. Urban mobility in cities is fundamentally about space. The goal is moving more people with fewer cars, less space, lower emissions, lower public costs, etc. From the Detroit Department of Street Railways, in 1937. Via

The mayor is so vain he actually thinks this law is about him.
This ordinance does not make it illegal for any councilmembers to support or oppose candidates. I find it interesting that the only parts of the law that he is attacking are coordinating with/disclosing dark money.
On top of our water struggles, our land use is directly connected to our poor air quality. Every day we breathe in what internal combustion engines spew out. We pay for through debt collateralized by our health, and the interest rates on this loan are very high indeed.

Those who push housing first as a policy solution are often the same people who support socialism. Like socialism, housing first sounds good in theory, but in practice has proven to be an abject failure, deteriorating the conditions of people trapped in it
