Well done Hampshire river keepers, @ActivistAnglers @AnglingTrust for getting this to parliament. Thanks @carolinenokes for being our voice and hopefully lesson learned to trust a word @SouthernWater say going forward. ✊✊

As this fiasco unravels it should be impossible for this empty government not to systematically dismantle & restructure the way they regulate our water. We currently pay taxes for gov to fail, and water bills to line shareholders pockets. It’s all broken, very broken indeed.
Ofwat are utterly, utterly hopeless day 13,101. In early 2024 it was revealed that @thameswater was defaulting on their legal commitments to invest in the environment by £1,134,000,000. A total of 105 projects would not be delivered. At the time I asked, what's happened the money, where's it gone. The @guardian got to the bottom of it all in Dec last year, Thames had diverted the money to help, amongst other things, pay executive bonuses. During the secret internal meetings TW management had even discussed "The risk of a public and regulatory backlash if it emerged that cash set aside for work such as cutting river pollution had been spent elsewhere". So they knew exactly what they were doing and when ahead and did it anyway. And here we are over 12 months since it was first exposed and @Ofwat has finally woken up. Utter, utter, shambles. No doubt this one will drag on for years and years just like the still ongoing investigating into the great sewage scandal. For God's sake get rid of them...

@MattHayesfish Well said Matt. What a tragic tragic maelstrom of destruction aquaculture has caused for nature and the wild salmon. 🤬

Reeves and Reid the nature wreckers. @Keir_Starmer knee jerk populist government are destructive bandits who will preside over the further demise of our rivers, and ultimately the extinction of the chalkstream salmon. Yet another unpopular gov with flailing leadership. NEXT!
The "environmental requirements" that the Westminster Government want to scrap currently protect SALMON. Goodbye protection for salmon on the rivers Wye, Itchen, Tweed, Eden, Dee, Hampshire Avon, Camel, Ehen... (Coming soon in their Planning and Infrastructure bill) @TheJimMurray @MattHayesfish @Feargal_Sharkey @AnglingTrust @EllieChowns @GreenJennyJones

@Keir_Starmer treasury are backtracking on this commitment. We call on @UKLabour not to make such a foolish decision,& ensure money from fines is invested back into cleaning up our rivers and seas. POLLUTERS MUST PAY. Not the taxpayer. 😡

Truly Heroic achievement from king of campaigners @MattStaniek , proving we can convince these companies to engage positively for our environment (not that we should have to). As Matt says, we need our apathetic government to catch up. Do you job @SteveReedMP Result!!💪💪💪
In a monumental victory for Save Windermere, United Utilities (UU) has withdrawn their appeals to the First-Tier Tribunal, where they argued that the Information Commissioner (ICO) was wrong in in their decision telling them to release environmental information to the campaign. They have also subsequently released the environmental data they had been fighting to withhold from the public. Save Windermere, as a second respondent in this case, worked tirelessly alongside esteemed barristers Nicholas Ostrowski and Samual Glanville, who provided pro-bono work on this case. Since the decision, United Utilities has communicated readily with the campaign. In addition to releasing the appeal information, they have also provided a significant amount of additional data we had previously requested. We commend this new approach by UU and the leadership decisions that led to this increased transparency about how their activities impact England's largest lake. While we are encouraged by this outcome, we cannot ignore that it took years of persistent campaigning to achieve it, including countless complaints to the ICO, news articles and national media coverage and even the imposition of a special enforcement measure on United Utilities by the ICO – the foundations for which were laid by Save Windermere – making them the first water company in the UK to receive one. We hope United Utilities will continue this newfound commitment to transparency and make strides in collecting more comprehensive data to fully assess their impact on Windermere. Should the need arise, Save Windermere will not hesitate to fight for transparency again. The full statement on this can be found at - big thanks to @JonUngoedThomas at the Observer for covering this story. Now we want to see more from @Keir_Starmer and @SteveReedMP

Vehemently Jenny. @SteveReedMP @labour cannot be allowed to adopt the Tory’s apathy and gaslighting when it comes to our waterways. Many eyes are watching @FishLegal_ case today…
What?!? More eco stupidity from Labour. Am sure @TheJimMurray and @ActivistAnglers will challenge this? @YHGreenParty

Amen.
"This new government came into power promising that cleaning up our rivers, lakes and seas was a top priority,” “The fact that it is fighting our angler members in court to avoid doing the hard work necessary to bring about any improvements in the health of Britain’s rivers flies in the face of that commitment."
