🚨 Breaking News 🚨 Save Windermere has once again been involved in exposing United Utilities exploitation of Windermere. Today the BBC reported that in the last 3 years, United Utilities has ILLEGALLY dumped 143,000,000 litres of untreated sewage directly into Windermere from just one of their sites — that’s thethe equivalent of 23 million toilet flushes, 1,600 double-decker buses, or enough to fill Big Ben 30 times! 💩 According to the BBC, United Utilities claims they reported these incidents at Glebe Road Pumping Station as soon as they were aware, which suggests they simply didn’t know about the instances of illegality from 2021 to September 2023, despite it being their statutory obligation to show permit compliance. The BBC estimates an additional 24 incidents that weren’t reported at the time could have cost the company £2.5 million through lower rewards or greater penalties. You might be thinking, where’s the Environment Agency? Isn’t this their job? Well, once again, they’ve turned a blind eye. They’ve failed to ask for the data, failed to hold United Utilities accountable and failed to protect Windermere from this predatory behaviour. We need your help to stop this 🫵 👊 Tag @Keir_Starmer 👊 Email Keir Starmer 👊 Share the video with the hashtag #savewindermere Let’s try and get this trending. Keir Starmer has often spoken about his love for the Lake District. Now it’s time for him to put his money where his mouth is and end sewage pollution in Windermere once and for all. Windermere is a symbol of our cultural heritage, a key driver of the local and national economy, and a sanctuary for rare and protected wildlife. This is a national and international disgrace, one of the country’s greatest natural treasures is being exploited by the multi-billion pound private water company. It’s time for Westminster to act. @Keir_Starmer , it’s time to stop the sewage to Save Windermere. “We can't help thinking that if Secretary of State, Steve Reed, had acted, not just prevaricated, and taken Thames Water into Special Administration months ago, when it became perfectly clear that the company was not delivering its statutory duties - undeniable, and was failing financially - undeniable - this case would not have needed to happen.”

Week 66 of the Strike Against Sewage Today we want to draw your attention to Windrush Against Sewage Pollution (@WindrushWasp ) and their current intervention at the high court where Thames Water are essentially trying to get approval for a £3 billion loan at over 9.5% interest plus high fees, to keep it out of Special Administration as it runs out of money. What is happening in London over the next week doesn’t seem to be directly linked to Windermere but in reality what happens to the Uk’s largest water company impacts every other one. We will be watching closely not only as WASP have played a critical role in our campaign to protect Windermere, but because of the large implications of the results of this proceedings. The strike is a space for debate on water pollution—not just in Windermere, but more broadly—so people sometimes bring their own messages to discuss what matters to them. What’s great about Save Windermere’s message is that it’s simple: stop putting sh*t in Windermere.

When you see stories like this just remember the phenomenal new paper by @DrAlexFord @Jamie_Woodward_ @OxonAndrew @watervole3 that showed just how many greenwashing tactics the water industry deploys. Why are there no independent voices represented in these articles?

So, shareholders have contributed essentially nothing to the water industry since privatisation. They’ve broken the law, failed to fulfil their statutory duties, racked up billions in debt—and now they’re being rewarded by charging people more? In a not-for-profit system, all bill increases would fund investment and protect the environment. Under the re-privatisation of water, huge chunks are instead going to those who haven’t contributed. @Feargal_Sharkey @HugoSAS @carolvorders @CarolineLucas @TheJimMurray @ChrisGPackham @WindrushWasp
