Sikh representation was more than two-fold, the Hindus 2/3 and the Punjabi Musalman represention was equal to their ratio in the population.
All Punjabis regardless of background contributed.
My great-grandfather seated in the centre, Subadar-Major Bawa Singh. Mobilised for Indian Expeditionary Force E. Aden, Egypt, Sinai & Palestine. He was one of 113 men from Panjaur village that we found in the register. Proud.

Partition meant this would probably be the last time the 8th Punjab regt would be photographed together in Mar 1947.
Transfer & bifurcation of regiments was an inevitable outcome of Partition.
In doing so, many long-standing relationships & associations came to an abrupt end.
Officers in the 23rd Sikh Pioneers, Lt-Col Robert Nicolas & Subadar-Major Bawa Singh both fought together in Tibet, NWF 1908 (Zakha Khel) & Aden, Egypt & Palestine during WW1. Their descendants would meet over a century later in Walthamstow

Congratulations to WW2 veteran Havildar-Major Rajinder Singh Dhatt on his Points of Light honour. During WW2 he served in the Royal Indian Army Service Corps. Great that he has been recognised for tirelessly flying the flag for the Undivided Indian Ex-servicemen's Association.

The 23rd Sikh Pioneers were building the Anatolian Railway in Turkey in 1919. As this war diary shows, 12th September was marked as a holiday to remember the 21 Sikhs from the 36th Sikh Regt who fought to the last man & last bullet defending Saragarhi against immeasurable odds.

helped Verinder determine his ancestor's regiment. Sepoy Thakar Singh of the 22nd Punjabis was killed-in-action in Basra on 27th Oct 1915. The Basra War Memorial commemorated only the Officers by name. Thakar Singh was one of the other "245 men".

After defending the Suez Canal, the 23rd Sikh Pioneers, Egyptian Labour Corps & the Royal Engineers built a railway, under enemy fire, over a desert from the Sinai peninsula into Jerusalem, enabling Allenby's final offensive, ending 400 years of Ottoman rule.
The regiment saw service in India, France, Egypt and Mesopotamia during the Great War. With the expansion of the Indian Army during the latter half of the war, a second battalion of the unit was raised in 1917 and a third in 1918.

The Punjab WW1 Registers have several examples of a Granthi who would have led such prayers. Granthi Thakur Singh of the 92nd Punjabis regiment. Village: Langeri. District: Jalandhar (although today it falls in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar dist.), Punjab.
In 1919, the grounds of Hampton Court Palace played host to a large contingent of Indian soldiers taking part in the post-war Peace Celebrations. In 2023 a new display at Hampton Court Palace will explore their story and experiences.

Over a million Indian troops fought in the British India Army during the Great War (1914-1918). I've cleaned this autochrome of Sikh & Muslim soldiers from the Punjab, taken in France 106 years ago by Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud. It is original colour from 1917 and not colourised.

The Sikh Regiments of the Indian Army were the main shock troops used by the British from 1846 up until Independence in 1947. The Sikh Regiment was at one stage one of the highest decorated regiments. Sikh Regiments have won 14 VC's
