Historian Jerry Brotton on #Empireworld in the physical @FT today. It's amazing when, after years and years of toil, in the face of relentless and sometimes organised hostility, someone really gets your work.

My self-worth ain't invested in such things, but it's my first time on the Sunday Times bestseller list & a poignant moment for a boy who couldn't speak English when he started school. Thanks to the libraries which made me, the readers of #EmpireLand & @VikingBooksUK @jealnicola

380,000 children in the UK don't own books. I was one of them. We'll have to invent libraries all over again once they're gone. My piece for @thetimesmagazine tomorrow and online from today. #Books #Libraries #EmpireLand #TheBoyWithTheTopknot #literacy.

Remembrance Sunday. A time to remember all of them. Including the millions of Black, Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Irish Catholic soldiers whose contribution has too often been ignored and even, at times, deliberately silenced.

This week I got two racially abusive letters about my children's book on empire. I also met a student (with her parent) who is applying to study History at Cambridge having been inspired by #EmpireLand. ❤️ I won't stop this work.

Thrilled that @LyricHammer is staging my novel, Marriage Material, next year. Adapted by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, and directed by Iqbal Khan, it's a multi-generational drama that follows one Sikh family and their corner shop from the 1960s to the present day. a story that.

Michael has written an essential book on Britain's involvement in slavery. These are points that should be put to anyone who maintains that Britain spontaneously abolished slavery out of sheer goodness.

I think we need a 🧵about why Britain REALLY abolish slavery in 1833, because people supported the measure for very different reasons … 1/.
