In new paper, we found that Russian oil export prices at Kozmino port stood at $73/barrel in 2023Q1—with 96% of volumes sold above the price cap $60/barrel!

Do tech firms lay off workers because of AI?
I do not think so: When money is cheap, tech firms pile on hiring; when money is expensive, they tighten the belt. So far, there is no systematic empirical evidence that firms use AI to replace labor.

Talked to close friend in RU, worried about her husband being sent to war. (Who should know what's going on). In response to my question "what's your plan", she said "well not everyone dies in the war". I cried so much, realizing how far gone people in RU are.
Been talking to families of conscriptable men all day. Unfortunately this is Feb22 all over again. Massive denial and cognitive dissonance and little media coverage of anything beyond the abstract phrase "partial mobilization". That first word seems to key to magical thinking.

As someone who did interest rate risk management at big regional bank, this is good explanation for the main reason

Very good thread about ordinary Russians supporting Russian war in Ukraine.
I am from East Ukraine, and had many friends in Russia. None of them condemned the war or showed empathy. When I asked if they are afraid to die in the war, "not everyone dies in a war" was the reply.
A lesser known page of the Russo-Ukrainian war is the story of how a bunch of Ukrainian digital pros launched a *massive* info campaign in Feb/March 2022 to penetrate Russian propaganda and reach ordinary Russians.
It’s time you should know this story (and learn from it).

When Russians invaded Donbas in 2014, our family friend from Moscow called my mom how happy she was to emancipate suppressed RU-speaking in Donbas.
But there was NO suppression of RU-speaking people!
RU propaganda ate RU people's brains.
Did Ukraine kill 14K ethnic Russians prior to 2022? This is one of the justification by the Russians for the invasion: to protect ethnic Russians. Recently I have seen a reappearance of this argument. So, we must refute it again, with facts. 1/

Learned a lot at NY Fed Fintech conference yesterday!
I especially liked the format of having panel of academic papers on a topic (eg open banking) followed by panel discussion of industry experts on that topic. So much innovation happening in the world!

How do we stop Russian war in Ukraine?
By stopping Russia from earning money from selling its oil.
But the Russian oil capped price of $60-70 proposed by US/EU is will do nothing. Need to cut this to $30/bbl to have any impact.

Our analysis suggests that the sweet spot for the discount is about $50/bbl. The price around $35/bbl with a $50/bbl discount and current global prices – will still be above Russia’s cost of production, which is in the $10-15/bbl range, preserving the incentive to supply.

: 100% true! I am from Donbas: a relative of a friend of mine "serve" in "separatists army". In reality, they are recruited and paid by Russia, and do what Russians tell them.
The "Russia-backed Donbas separatists" term is misleading because most understand it to imply a backwards sequence, i.e. Donbas separatists existed, challenged Kyiv, and then Russia decided to back them. In reality, Russia intervened, recruited locally, and then challenged Kyiv.
