The best game designers are madly in love with old arcade games. The worst are desperately trying to make games into movies
The best game developers in the past were well-read people who didn't actually play that many games. I can't think of a person less qualified to make a good design decision than someone who thinks playing video games is a "hobby" and who has 500 titles in their steam library.

This problem is so out of control that the ps2, the most successful and popular game console of all time, is a complete mystery to almost all video game youtubers. They'll talk about dmc or mgs like some niche thing that happened in the distance when those were juggernaut games.

The Onimusha games still to this day are some of the best selling games Capcom ever made. I know of a grand total of five youtubers who ever played a single one of those games.

@kevinbolk @WoodsVsEvilDead There's an extremely depressing piece of information in regards to that Mary Poppins Returns movie, where when making the 2D animated scene, they had to pull a guy out of retirement to teach them how to do that kind of animation. There is no one left at Disney who knows how to 2D.

@_BasedPerry Many games want that element minimized, where others want to maximize it. A Metal Gear game says "how much can I make the player involved in this spy movie" where a Last of Us says "how much can I remove the player's ability to ruin my movie before they get mad?".

One of the reasons ps2 is so magical is the way the sky was the limit on what never before things a game could do. You'd be laughed out the door using these as selling points today, but in 2001 this was like landing on the moon.
