Season 1 for the
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast is officially over!
And if there’s a Season 1, that means there HAS to be a Season 2 right?
Find out if
@kmeister2000
is gonna let me come back on next season to talk Shop with him and interview some super smart devs in our ecosystem.
@realBrookNash
Build up some savings you can fall back on so you can learn to say “no” to jobs that aren’t a good fit for you and your business.
If you operate from a scarcity mindset, you’ll always stay there.
Send all the good thoughts...my dog died this morning.
She was 10 years old (guesstimated age since she was a rescue). She's been a part of our family for over 9 years.
Not looking forward to telling the kids when they get home from school.
So long good puppy.
Shopify app devs that don't provide a development store option, how come?
This is huge for me as a freelancer who works w/ merchants. Being able to show them how to get your app running or run through basic use-cases.
Also means I'll try it BEFORE contacting support.
@XplodingUnicorn
My daughter rolled her eyes at me for the first time when she was two years old. I looked at my wife and said, "that starts THIS early?!"
I only started using “lol” recently because my dad used to end most of his texts “lol.”
Even serious ones.
Finally asked him about it and he thought it meant “lots of love.”
If you were fortunate enough to have a good dad, give him a call or go see him.
I miss you dad. Lol
Got to celebrate 14 years of marriage with my wife a little bit early this past weekend.
We realized mid-week that this would be the last free weekend before school starts for the kids (our anniversary isn't until next week).
Dropped the kids off with family and spent the
Taught myself to code in my spare time after helping recover a hacked WordPress site many years ago.
It didn't happen as fast or how I thought it would, but now I'm a full-time freelance web developer working with Shopify (previously a social worker).
#DevAfter30
Whoah thank you Shopify!
Gifted by
@Shopify
thanks so much for the cool stuff from the new drop!
Super grateful for this and also for starting to stock the supply shop with some dev swag 🚀
If you’re a freelancer, I’m looking forward to meeting you at Editions!
Looking forward to meeting a bunch of other non-freelancers IRL as well but, if you ARE a freelancer, be sure to join me bright and early for the Freelancer Breakfast Meetup 🚀
Freelancing is scary and it can be very lonely at times. I've learned a lot of things the hard way.
I love sharing content online and learning directly from others but there are times when it's best to get feedback directly and be able to hop in a call and learn from others.
@nicocerdeira
@webflow
This is wild. Take a look at Shopify. More folks are using it for content and then you can always look at adding the paid digital or other products down the road. Totally doable as content site and you won’t get hit with this mess.
@dhh
"Legitimate" education systems not much better. My wife and I have over $100k in student loan debt for jobs with advanced degrees that do not pay very well (yes we were both very dumb about school). Social worker and licensed counselor and combined we don't crack $100k/year
Superb new article up from the performance team at Shopify. Talking about the most common issues with speed site “hacks.”
Love seeing the proactive approach here cracking down on this practice.
Ummmmm...
Did y'all see you can BUY domains through
@Cloudflare
now?!
Have a couple premium domains that are still not supported, bummer, but this has me sold on moving all domains to Cloudflare.
We'll be recording the next episode of the
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast with
@nomad_maker
this Friday!
Excited to finally get the chance to chat with Coralie and learn more not just about freelancing and working with theme shops, but also what it's like to be a Shopify Partner in other
Shared this with another dev today, so worth sharing again because it's always news to someone 🤓
Shopify Workshops!
Add this to your bookmarks for resources. I have referenced it many times.
Link in comments.
My biggest qualm about is that there is no way I'm going to be able to make it to all the talks I want to 😞
Finally sat down to schedule out and make some hard decisions...
Start Freelancing Today from
@kvlly
is one of the books that helped launch my freelancing career.
It gave me confidence, practical guidance, and focus in a time where I was struggling to figure out how to break into web dev. If you're starting with

Wish I would’ve planned better to have made it to Pre/ditions, but I did have an amazing time with the family doing the tourist thing 🤗
Even got to meet up with
@EppAdam
at Niagara on the Lake! Adam was one of my first Shopify Dev online friends. Awesome to meet in real life.
It just crossed over! Our not so little anymore Twitter community is now at over 3,500 folks!
If you haven't joined yet, please do! Starting to get some good chatter from devs on problems and solutions.
Thanks to
@gilgNYC
for kicking it all off!
Shopify's new performance metrics in the admin now includes events!
Apps installed, apps uninstalled, live theme edited, and theme published are currently available events 🥳
God bless Shopify 🫡
6 years ago I was a full-time social worker side-hustling freelance web development and dreaming of getting a job building on the web full-time.
And now, I run a business that supports my family and my wife and I get to work together.
Living the dream 🥹
Successfully talked a merchant into migrating away from tag filtering to metafields 🚀
It's a bit of work when you have thousands of SKUs on a currently very brittle implementation. But they bought into the strategy that this is the way forward 💪
Long live custom data!
The Beyonce post did so well and folks seemed so shocked that someone might customize a free theme to build something at such a big scale lol that I figured I'd do another.
The more famous Taylor's shop runs on Prestige
Pleased to say I’m getting better at metaobjects and custom data on Shopify. Starting to feel much more natural.
Someone asked if they could link a metaobject to a customer and I said “o yeah sure, I’d probably just do that with a metafield”…then I actually thought about how I
I get paid once a week to speak to new devs on a group call. Like a group mentoring session.
It is one of my favorite things to do each week.
Just answering questions about web development, Shopify, freelancing, business practices, client management, etc for an hour.
How do I
Pumping out some checkout extensions today 🚀
This was really confusing for me at first and now it's just smooth to crank out a handful of standard extensions-only checkout extensions.
Huge thanks to
@ShopifyDevs
for making this easy to get started.
Shopify upping the game and listening to devs giving feedback on reviews on the app store.
Reviews has been a point of contention lately and Shopify has already made improvements (noting time spent on app before review).
I see this as a real positive.
Wishing all you Shopify Devs a short week this week!
May the uptimes be solid and your code be stable so you can enjoy some family time this week if you're celebrating Thanksgiving.
I'll be traveling out of state to see family and meet one of my nephews for the first time.
Seems like everyone will know about Shopify sooner or later.
Taylor Swift, Mr. Beast, and now Beyonce all have shops on Shopify.
Who are we missing?
Mr. Beast and Beyonce are both running shops that are based on free Shopify themes.
You can't use multi-line metafields in Shopify to display HTML - or can you?
Learned today you can by directly referencing the metafield in the customizer and appending .value to get it to serve HTML rather than plain-text (single-line metafields work just fine to serve HTML).
Sometims I see folks calling premium Shopify themes "pricey" and lacking in features.
That's hilarious.
Not all themes are created equal, in their functionality, design, or support, but to say that they are not an incredible deal at the value they bring is downright laughable.
🔥 As of this month, all you need to write a Serverless Function with Netlify are these lines of code!! Netlify automatically detects your directory now
Seriously, that’s it!
Here’s a thread of some other great things you may not know about Netlify Functions 🧵
Our next guest we'll be recording with on the
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast is none other than Mohammad (
@hashemito
) cofounder of
@gadget_dev
🚀
Previously at Shopify, Mohammad has gone on to build a Saas that helps other devs build their own Saas!
I've had the privilege of getting to
Frustrating when you work with a brand for a while making improvements here and there and when they ask for a full redesign, they say the quote is too expensive.
Then they hire some guy to do some marketing who also suggests he builds websites. Ask you to stick around in case
Some new themes in the theme store!
Relax appears to be Swissuplabs' second Shopify theme.
Aesthetic is Noord's second as well.
Kidu, new theme dev on the theme store - 1o1development. Second theme I've seen with native bundler.
Cello is Webibazaar Template's third theme.
I'm excited for the upcoming changes to the speed metrics on Shopify for a couple of reasons, but if I had to call out my biggest excitement it's detailed in the image below.
When looking at these different sets of metrics, which one do you think is the Plus shop doing millions
Went full-time as a freelance web developer this year. Super challenging, but turned my side hustle into my full-time gig.
Couldn't have done it without my wife's support. If she wouldn't have been so encouraging, I never would have been brave enough to try.
Time for the 341st

Twitter Chat!
Tonight’s topic is….your 2021 accomplishments
- What did you do this year that you're really proud of?
- What was something that was a challenge?
- Who do you have to thank this year for helping you get to where you are today?
And we are LIVE! It's here!
Your own group chat system, installed on your own server, for $299, once. And you get the code. Installs in just a couple minutes with a single line in the terminal. Done.
Have at it!
Finally just made a decision.
Have been using Asana (free) for over a year. Tested out paid version and forced me to make a decision about whether or not I wanted to keep using it.
Experience didn't get any better on paid version.
Moving everything over to Basecamp.
You know what's really dumb
@asana
?
Showing a persistent "Upgrade" button even on paid plans.
I get wanting to make it noticeable, but on a paid version I don't want to be constantly pushed towards upgrading again.
This is tantamount to an ad in paid software.
Want to learn more about Shopify Functions, using metafields in your app, and how
@SammyIsseyegh
went from building for Pizza Hut to working on Shopify?

@LiquidWeekly
Podcast episode on Thursday, as we talk to Sam about Checkout Extensions and the move from
Rolling out extensions-only apps to Plus orgs is very clean so far 😁
Built one out a week or so ago and went ahead and added a couple more today.
Just generate, configure, and deploy the new version to release and merchant doesn't have to do anything extra outside of setup.
Metaobjects are still so "new" that I've really only just started to grasp what they're capable of.
A big part of that was our conversation with
@dear_trudence
on the
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast.
Episode will release Thursday 🫢
I pushed some new features for a client to production
If you're a Shopify app dev that serves a widget on the shop, stop doing this or build in some escape controls.
Your improperly set widget blocks user interactions. When this happens, there are only a handful of common scenarios.
If the merchant is patient, they'll reach out to
The performance team is at it again at Shopify with a great post on the going headless consideration.
You need to have more reasons for going headless than "performance" because it turns out, that's not really a reason.
New Run code option for Shopify Flow, where we can run Javascript in a Flow, has an example repository to get you started!
Current limitation is we can't use fetch BUT this is slated to be available this year.
We are very close to 100 subscribers on YouTube for the
@LiquidWeekly
podcast.
Let's make it happen please!
More stellar content on the way. Recording with

episode releases next week.
If it's not worth a subscribe yet, let us know why.
Officially a triathlete.
Didn't do as well as I had hoped, but biggest goal was to finish and next was sub 2 hours.
Great weather and great experience. Felt undertrained on the hills on the bike but was real happy with swim, the event I was most worried about.
Great update! Recipient fields for gift cards AND scheduled send times!
If you're using an older theme, you might not have the functionality quite yet, but if you want to see this in action go check out the newest version of the Dawn theme (12.0.0).
Super handy feature and all
Final episode of the season going up for
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast this week.
@kmeister2000
and I chat about where the podcast has been and where it's going before taking a little break from recording and editing for the summer.
Stay tuned 😎
Another update for
@ShopDevAlliance
🚀
Appreciate everyone's patience while

This was something I had hoped would resonate with maybe 30-50
2,500+ members in our Shopify Partners community 🚀
Would love to see more partner content in there.
Please join and share information/resources or ask for help where you can
I am very excited to see the new performance report update coming to Shopify dashboards soon that will be using Core Web Vitals!
Had another merchant call yesterday with a client that was insistent that their blog pages were "too slow" and this was the reason they were seeing
I just love using Netlify.
One of those super amazing / great products where the hardest decision you end up making is what you want to build with.
Almost too easy to throw up a simple site. And with forms just built in? Soooo handy.
I love my Shopify Display.
Did you know you can put more on the Display than just Shopify data?
Super cool to see my Sprint Triathlon training monthly progress. It's just over two weeks away and feeling pretty good!
Big fan of
@mercury
so far. Huge wins early on, super easy to create accounts and can set up rules to automatically move money.
This means my manual action of moving over money from initial deposit for taxes and cash flow is now completely automated 🤯
Parenting pro tip, when you make pancakes make a ton extra and freeze them. They reheat well.
I layer them with sheets of parchment paper so they don’t stick together.
Easy breakfast win for the kiddos.
Historically, error messages in Shopify have not been stellar.
You usually get the standard something's wrong page with a non-descript error, "You don't have permissions..."
WHAT PERMISSIONS?!
But just got this new one today. Kudos to the
@ShopifyDevs
who worked on this 🙏
Folks, I dropped the ball - HARD - on getting the word out on our next

Talking Shopify Functions and Checkout Extensibility in this just released episode of the
@LiquidWeekly
Podcast!
@SammyIsseyegh
from
@DiscountKit
talks about the ins and outs of it all including using metafields for configuration.
New article up from the Performance team over at Shopify!
Talking about lazy loading, pros and cons of native versus using a library, and also hints at future tools and resources we'll have to help prioritize Core Web Vitals properly.
Great read:
Brutal when a big Shopify Plus app has staff that creates a Script and just completely leaves out another app's Scripts 😕
Loyalty program updated shipping Script and asked merchant to publish. Merchant asked me to give it a look - totally missing our Scripts for returns 🤦♂️
Be on the lookout!
I got a sneak preview of this and it’s kind of a big deal…
If you are a theme or app dev in the Shopify space, this is something you’ll be interested in ✅
Big announcement coming tomorrow!
We've cooked up something extra special as we ENTER the holiday season. It will be worth GIVING us a moment of your FREE time to read the announcement.
WINter has never been more fun.
The new customer accounts is going to be huge.
I don't love that a lot of things are moving to apps over theme customizations, BUT checkout extensibility has been going great so far so I'm looking forward to how this is going to continue to be built out.
Documentation is there
Just like Shopify Checkout ( whaddup
@mcfazeli
👋 ), Shopify App Developers can build UI extensions for the new customer account pages
Here's what the extension targets look like for...
- order index page
- order status page
- profile page
My biggest accomplishment this week? Maybe this year?
I had not one, but TWO dev tasks that I said out loud I could fix in less than 10 minutes.
AND I DID! 🚀
Honored I get to help Karl bring helpful content to devs working in the Shopify ecosystem.
I've learned so much from Liquid Weekly and I'm excited to get to somehow contribute to such a valuable resource.
If you're not subscribed yet to

Podcast incoming!
It’s a doozy folks.
Was supposed to be our final episode of this first season so
@kmeister2000
and I could take a break but he HAD to know what it was like at Editions 😬
We also have a special guest to talk about his AWARD
Another amazing developer in our Shopify community is known by most at this point, but did you know you can also sponsor his work on Github?
Go support
@kinngh
and the amazing work he puts out there.
