They are very famous within the queer community but there are plenty of younger queer people like myself who grew up disconnected from it. I was raised in a very strict Catholic household and was restricted from accessing queer media. Some of us didn’t have the luxury of having.

What I hate the most about all of this is a lot of younger LGBT people like myself saw him as a beacon for gay media and he really could’ve opened more doors for us by citing sources like “The Celluloid Closet” so we could learn more and grow from there but he hid it from us. 😞

I’m saying from MY experience I was stopped from doing all of that until I began to be removed from my parents’ control in college. I’m 25 but I probably have less exposure to queer media than let’s say, a teenager with same sex parents. I’m learning now but I started very late.

I wouldn’t say that exactly. As a woman who took James’s word at face value but never attacked his critics, I think for a lot of people, once they have trust in a creator especially one that is left leaning. they see them as always coming from a good place and aren’t as critical.

People shouldn’t be shamed for growing up in backgrounds that restricted their access to new information. You wouldn’t ridicule a kid who grew up poor for getting a poor SAT score because they didn’t have access to a tutor and a well funded school district.

I’ve been pursuing lgbt media a lot more. You didn’t start out knowing all queer media, you accumulated it over time, but you probably had an earlier start than me. Some of us are late bloomers. Hell there are trans people who didn’t come out until their 40s!

Absolutely, I’m learning every day and while I may not be as up to date as others about queer media, the important part is that I’m continuing to learn. Today has been helpful in that respect, because a lot of people have come out of the woodworks to recommend new media to watch.
