What are examples in any form of media where a "brilliant song/painting/play/etc" within the story is actually as good as the characters act like it is? Note: NOT the same as just "I liked it". It needs to actually fully match its fictional reputation

Realizing that most of the critiques of Villeneuve's visual and tonal approach to Dune are from people that have not read the book and have a wildly incorrect idea of what it's like

Dune is about humanity taken to its maximum possible limits, but still nonetheless trapped within those limits and problems; hampered by petty vindictiveness and religious fanaticism. It's often more about how much we *haven't* changed in 20,000 years, and how tragic that is.

Also Villeneuve very often ADDS extremely bizarre weird concepts that are nowhere in the book. The Harkonnens were pretty standard hedonistic royalty originally, and he turned them into BDSM psychos living on an infrared nightmare planet.

Adding that of course Villeneuve is making a conscious choice to make his Dune more stripped back and brutalist, it’s not like that’s the only possible interpretation of the book. I just object to the idea that that visual language is *contrary* to what the book presents.

Great interview with Todd Field that also happens to totally put to rest the criticisms people had that Tár's ending was ridiculing video games or their fans. The tragedy has nothing to do with the medium she's working within, but the removal of her agency to interpret the music.

This is very dumb but also really reductive of Tolkien’s work. His First Age material is full of complex nuanced characters on the edge of good and evil and struggling with desires for revenge and violence. Túrin and Fëanor are two of his best characters because of that.

@FAWil4 Yeah, people say this all the time but I really don’t think there’s anything in the book to support it. It hardly has any visual descriptors of most things at all. A really trippy colorful look isn’t wrong, but it’s not any more faithful than Villeneuve’s brutalist look.
