New Million Veteran Program research out in

@ESC_Journals
! We use 🧬 to examine the relationship between Lipoprotein(a), LDL-C, and coronary plaque severity across the spectrum of disease.
Thrilled to announce the official launch of my lab at Stanford in
@StanfordDeptMed
! Our mission is to prevent 🫀 disease. We bring together 🧬, data science, and epidemiology.
We are hiring!
Please share with students, postdocs, & medical trainees!
Why do we observe a genetic correlation between educational attainment & traits like height or CRP? Because population
#GWAS
is biased by assortative mating & indirect genetic effects!
Nice paper using sib GWAS highlights the issue:
Cardiologists love imaging the 🫀. We focus A LOT on cardiac size📏 & function💪. But what about shape?
We used

Shape matters!

Just tried to pay a publication fee and my credit card declined it because they thought it seemed suspicious to send Elsevier thousands of dollars. I agree.
Incredible work led by

@tassimes
! The first truly DIVERSE large-scale GWAS of coronary disease. This badly needed data will hopefully shift the current trend of precision CV medicine towards a more equitable future.

FH is a syndrome of ⬆️LDL. The 🫀 risk associated with FH variants is not captured by a single LDL measurement. But in real clinical settings we have longitudinal LDL levels.

A simple GWAS of coronary dominance took us on an incredible journey 🛣️, with a look at human fetal 🫀, a 🐁 model, & the intriguing possibility that a developmental decision may impact adult disease 🤯
macOS has this thing where you sign a white piece of paper and hold it up to the camera, and it will digitize your signature. I was trying to do that, and this is what it gave me...
My Christmas tradition 8 years and running, being in hospital to take care of the patients! Wearing my Stanford Christmas sweater and got this amazing card from my interns, so holiday cheer is 💯
Happy holidays, all!! 🎄🎅🎄

These photos do not capture the huge number of physicians, nurses, & other healthcare workers who gathered today at Stanford to proclaim

Congrats to all of the graduating
@StanCVFellows
! I'm extra happy that in a random screen shot of Zoom graduation with >100 guests, there's one that includes me, my mom, and my sister. Couldn't have done any of this without them. Photo credit:

There is a difference between trying to not do things wrong vs trying to do things RIGHT. The
#pangenome
is trying to avoid egregious mistakes of the past. But I think to do genomics RIGHT requires a much bigger fundamental shift in approach.
As an early career academic, the lesson that's been hammered into me over and over and over again is don't count your chickens before they hatch. I won't even count my chickens after they hatch. I refuse to look at my chickens. There are no chickens.
How does polygenic risk for 🫀 disease impact women's longterm health? 🤔
We found many expected associations as well as one big surprise!

What an incredible & unified message from the leading experts of Stanford, calling attention to the, "falsehoods and misrepresentations of science recently fostered by Dr. Scott Atlas"
Not surprised at all to see my timeline flooded w/ praise for
@DrJoelKatz
, a truly remarkable physician educator & program director. Thank you Joel for making
@BrighamMedRes
the unparalleled program that it is, one that has deeply impacted so many physicians across the globe! 🥲
The incredible

interns and residents.
@DrJoelKatz
, thank you for everything you’ve done for us! We owe so much to you.
We will miss you!
Lastly, I live in an area with both extreme affluence and homelessness. I saw plenty of wealthy patients and poor patients alike. If all you care about is yourself, the selfish thing to do is care about others. No one is safe from covid until everyone is safe from covid.

Just when I thought I was done with fellowship... Covering CCU today so that our new chief fellow

This article would be better received if it were not coming from authors who frequently partake in the very behavior that they criticize. Worse yet, I don't think they acknowledge there own faults whatsoever. They really seem to see themselves as unbiased saints of science.
For the first time in 10 years, I will not travel home to Maine to spend Thanksgiving with my mom. Every year, I volunteer to work on Christmas, and I take Thanksgiving off for myself. This year I'm staying put, for my mom, for my colleagues, and for my country 🇺🇸

Bittersweet feelings as I walk out of the CCU for the last time, having now finished my clinical cardiology training. Seems fitting that my last duty was to hold pressure on a groin 💪💉
Are we ready to bring PRS into the clinic?
Is DTC 🧬 testing friend or foe?
Check out

Looking forward to presenting some thoughts on PRS!
In college I met Carlos Bustamante. He took me to the 2004 SMBE meeting. Too shy, I hid in the corner. Then a scientist approached me & asked what I was interested in. I said "disease genes" 😂. He encouraged me. It was Svante Paabo. 1st time I felt maybe I could be a scientist🤩
'Introduce young people to science.' A single meeting could change the trajectory of someone's life. I still have the Erlenmeyer flask he gave me when I was around 10 years old. (yes, I realize I was fortunate to meet such a cool scientist) 5/

This is complete junk, which is hopefully obvious to most. But realize, work like this is fundamentally no different than EA GWAS. These are not real phenotypes. It's clickbait pseudoscience.

trainees! And a wonderful mentor to me as well 🙏.

There are many great cardiology divisions around the country, but nothing beats Stanford. Happy holidays from all of us, and here's to heart health in 2019!
Dear California,
This is not the deal we had. I'm going to let this slide because the week has otherwise been off to a good start. But I don't want to have this conversation again.
We've seen this time & time again. Familial Hypercholesterolemia 🧬 variants ⬆️ risk for coronary disease, independent of observed LDL. Screening for FH using arbitrary thresholds of LDL falls short. Is it time for universal 🧬 screening?
