To the Australian people, young and old.
I have lived through many of these extraordinary moments in this country.
The Voice is now our moment.
Vote Yes.

This morning I announced my resignation as Senator for Western Australia, effective from 26 January 2024.
Regrettably, my recent treatment for cancer means that my health, although slowly improving, has left me physically unable to continue as a Senator.
It has been an honour.
The absurdity of the appointment of Mr. Abbott to the role of 'envoy' on Indigenous affairs demonstrates the Government's lack of respect for First Nations.
As one of my good friends, an old West Australian man told me:
'We don't need an envoy. We need an Abbott Proof Fence.'
Today I urge all Australians to Vote Yes.
So then when we look ourselves in the mirror tomorrow, we see a proud and compassionate nation reflected back.
Proud to stand alongside
@AlboMP
as he takes the next step on the path to a referendum. The words we’re proposing today are simple and straightforward - the work of many committed people and a strong starting point for discussions with Australians from all walks of life.
This is all the referendum is about.
These simple words, which will finally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution through a Voice.
I keep hearing ‘you have lost this, you may as well lay down and die’.
I don’t believe that.
I believe Australians will look at this on the day and say, ‘well this is a decent, honourable, good thing for us to do.’
Tens of thousands of Australians have marched today in support of recognition through a Voice.
Let this spirit of solidarity carry our nation to a successful referendum next month.
Let hope and reconciliation prevail.

This was my last press conference before I got sick.
My message is still the same - Voting Yes at the referendum is about forging a better relationship with our First Peoples.
We need all Australians.
Casting my vote today is the privilege and honour we all have as Australians.
We hold the power to determine the future we want for this country.
We hold the power to improve our relationship with our First Peoples - to recognise them and to give them a Voice.
Vote Yes.
My response to the decision of the Nationals to oppose the Voice to Parliament.
The Voice is not about politicians. It is an invitation to the Australian people.
I have great confidence in the Australian people to assess the Voice on its own merits.
Referendums are simply about voting on a principle.
The principle is whether we should recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as our First peoples…
Saying Yes to this principle is a good and honourable thing to do.
The Voice referendum will be October 14.
I’ve walked this path long enough to know this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change.
So get enrolled and start the conversation with your family and friends.
This will be a historic campaign.
This year, we made significant progress towards an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.
Next year, we will make history with a successful referendum.

As a nation we must take this opportunity to recognise our First Peoples.
We cannot leave this task to future generations.
I urge all Australians to respond to this referendum with love, trust and kindness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This Saturday - will we give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a seat at the table by voting Yes?
Or will we leave them to pick up the crumbs that fall from that table.
The Australian people must decide.
This is a historic day.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders have laid the foundation for hope.
We have announced the referendum question and constitutional provision to establish a Voice.
Morrison’s Voter ID bill would take Australia down a dangerous path. By creating yet another barrier for First Nations voters, the Govt is whittling away rights that were fought for over decades. There is no evidence this is needed. I urge my Senate colleagues to vote against it.
In 2004, my nephew Michael Long set out to ask then PM John Howard where the love was for Aboriginal people.
In 2023, he was joined by
@AlboMP
and hundreds more for the Long Walk towards Recognition and a Voice.
The suggestion that Tony Abbott could act as some kind of messenger or representative for First Nations people is condescending and a serious worry for First Nations people.
Yes moves our nation forward in a positive, constructive way.
The outcome of the referendum is in your hands Australia.
There’s nothing to fear and all to gain.
On this thirteenth anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s apology to the Stolen Generations, let us remember those thousands of survivors and their descendants who continue to suffer. Much of our history is yet to be learnt and taught. Until then, we will never be reconciled.
It’s an honour to attend the Garma festival on the traditional lands of the Yolŋu people with the PM and my colleagues. With this celebration of their culture, Yolŋu share their wisdom and hopes for the future. It’s up to us to listen and act.
“I believe Australians will look at this on the day and say ‘well this is a decent, honourable, good thing for us to do’.
There’s a decency in Australians that I’m hoping and confident…will come through.”
Over 97% of Australians are enrolled for this referendum, the highest number of all-time.
Australians care about this vote.
The Voice will do good things for our modern democracy.
We all mourn the passing of Archie Roach, poet warrior of First Nations. His contribution and commitment to healing and truth telling will be a lasting legacy, as we go forward to a reconciled nation where respect is given to the truth of our history.
Morrison has broken his promise to deliver a First Nations Voice to Parliament this term. Today we found out that there isn’t a single dollar in the budget to make it happen over the next 4 years.

Morrison's Voter ID bill is a cynical and racist attack on Australia's democracy. It will make it harder for all Australians to vote and it will further disenfranchise First Nations voters, who are already enrolled at far lower numbers. Just how low can this Government stoop?
After several long weeks at Parliament and travelling the country, I'm glad to have some time at home in Broome. This is a challenging time for many. I hope wherever you are, you draw some comfort from the beauty of this land.
The upcoming referendum on the Voice is an extraordinary moment for our country.
I have a great amount of faith in the Australian people - in their generosity and goodwill.
I hope to walk with you all towards real change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our focus should be on our respect for diversity and difference.
We should work to reconcile our differences with First Nations people.
That will help us move forward as a nation, and send the message to the world that we are a mature, modern democracy.
The Constitution Alteration Bill for the Voice has passed the House with an absolute majority!
121 to 25.
The Bill will come to the Senate, and once passed, it will be up to the Australian people to decide in the referendum later this year.
Let’s move our nation forward!
For National Reconciliation Week, it is my wish that the upcoming referendum be Australia’s greatest act of reconciliation.
Let us walk together, more united.
Let us deliver a successful referendum for a Voice that will be heard across the generations to come.
Privilege to hear
@SenatorWong
give Australia’s national address at the UNGA. She highlighted the importance of First Nations voices, both at home and overseas. Her passion and dedication for these issues is much appreciated. We are lucky to have her as our foreign Minister.
Congratulations to
@MarkMcGowanMP
for leading the ALP to a stunning election win. I am especially pleased to note that two Aboriginal women connected to Broome have been elected - Davina D’Anna and Cherie Sibosado. They will be a wonderful addition to the new parliament.

Today marks 6 years since the Uluru Statement was delivered to the Australian people and almost 6 decades since the 1967 Referendum.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders are determined to see the Voice realised for our communities.
Let’s take this nation forward.

Nearly 5 years after Uluṟu, the aspirations of First Nations people for a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament remain unfulfilled. A Labor govt would hold a referendum in its first term. We continue to extend the hand of bipartisanship to the Coalition to get this done

Today I met with survivors of the Stolen Generations to mark the 15th anniversary of Prime Minister Rudd’s apology.
I was also reunited with Halpin Hart. As a toddler, I witnessed his removal by police and welfare people in Katherine - I will never forget it.
@HealingOurWay
Labor is the only party committed to the Uluru Statement in full – Voice, Treaty, Truth. We will hold a referendum to constitutionally enshrine a Voice in our first term. It’s a matter of common decency that First Nations people have a say on the issues that impact their lives.
Today more than 60 First Nations leaders, from all corners of the continent, came together to help chart a course forward on the Voice referendum.
As we look to the future, we also remember all those that have come before us in the pursuit of justice for First Nations people.
As
@AlboMP
said, Parliament passes laws but people make history.
The Referendum for a Voice is now with the Australian people.
I have great faith that we will come together to vote Yes for better a future.

Just astonishing that First Nations people have clearly asked the Government for a Voice to Parliament – and the new Prime Minister Scott Morrison has given them Tony Abbott! The Government has once again demonstrated their unwillingness to listen to First Nations people.
Shameful behaviour by the Government in

Constitutional recognition through a Voice has the support of most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
To say there is some other form of recognition worth pursuing instead is to do what we have always done - to tell First Peoples what we think is best for them.

At the UN General Assembly this week to discuss the Uluṟu Statement and common challenges faced by Indigenous peoples across the world. It’s wonderful to listen and learn from other countries’ experiences as we take the next step on the path to reconciliation at home.
Yesterday, the Government joined One Nation in voting against my motion for a Committee on truth-telling and treaty making at the national level. It was defeated in a tied vote. This is a clear failure of leadership and a missed opportunity to heal the wounds of the past.

The renaming of Batman to Cooper is a mark of respect and recognition. It brings honour to the community and to our nation. It is an example of truth-telling and where we moving towards as our nation matures.
The Australian Electoral Commission has 'unanimously agreed' to rename the federal seat of Batman in honour of Indigenous rights campaigner William Cooper.

The past 24 hours have been a wake up call to all Australians that we must all stand up to racism, to bigotry, to hatred and to ignorance. We must instead focus on welcoming and celebrating our diversity and difference and let that take us forward as a mature, modern nation.

The challenges confronting the Alice Springs community are complex.
Today I joined the Prime Minister and Minister for Indigenous Australians to meet with community groups, council, the Northern Territory Government and frontline services, to discuss a positive path forward.
We cannot deny the fact that First Nations peoples had our lands taken from us without negotiation, without purchase, without consent; & without any treaty, unlike other Commonwealth nations.This dispossession was cloaked in the insidious myth of terra nullius

It’s time to proudly recognise our First Nations Peoples in our Constitution, so that it might be a Constitution for all Australians.
A Labor Government, together with First Nations people will make the Voice a reality - including a pathway to a referendum.
Today is a significant day for our nation.
The Constitution Alteration Bill for the Voice has been introduced to Parliament.
We are now well and truly on the road to a referendum that will take our nation forward.
I thank
@AlboMP
for appointing me to the roles of Shadow Assistant Minister for Reconciliation and Shadow Assistant Minister for Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians.
Tonight the Broome community lit candles on Cable beach in memory of Cassius Turvey. We mourn the life of this young boy, which was ended far too soon. My deepest condolences to his mother, family, friends and community.
Morrison has dismissed a referendum on a Voice with a flippant “Why would I?”. Govt costings released today show he hasn’t even put aside funding for a weaker legislated Voice - despite promising one in 2019. Enough hollow promises. Labor will hold a referendum in our first term.
This is a welcome step from the Vic Govt. Truth telling is a critical element of the Uluru Statement and essential for healing our nation. There is nothing to fear - and everything to gain - from facing our past together.
The upcoming referendum for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice is our next great rite of passage.
It will mark an important stage in the life of the nation, the coming together of an Australian peoples old and new.

Reconciliation is not a one-way street, it is a liberation for the perpetrators of wrong and the people who suffered through that wrong - it is mutual. And there is nothing to be lost for anyone.
All Australian's should be appalled at this fact. There must be national leadership if we are to break the vicious cycle. Cold hard facts such as these are a shame upon us all.
