Why do we draw journeys as lines on maps? What has maritime history got to do with it? My new book is available to preorder! It was my hardest and most enriching writing and research experience to date. Out 29/8

Yesterday was publication day! No time to stop and Tweet, but as I crossed town I did drop into the
@CUPBookshop
to have a look at a physical copy of Foreign Jack Tars. Cover design, cover texture, and page scent: 10/10. Thank you to all who helped along the way!
Foreign Jack Tars has just been shortlisted for the
@RoyalHistSoc
Whitfield Book Prize! Best of luck to everyone else who received the same lovely email this grey Monday morning!
FJT will be out in paperback with
@CambridgeUP
in a couple of weeks.
I've just been told (surreal) that I was chosen as the joint winner of the
@CamHistory
Prince Consort & Thirlwall Prize, for a PhD dissertation involving original historical research! As always, I want to thank my supervisor
@renaudmorieux
and everyone who helped along the way!
I'm very happy to see that my
@PastPresentSoc
article is out,

! It discusses how modern human tracking and geosurveillance don't just stem from panopticon systems, but from sea charts and officers' self-discipline. 1/2

I was delighted to be awarded this year's
@ScottishHistSoc
Rosebery Prize. The entry was linked to my work on Scotland and the Navy -- possibly more on this soon! I just can't overemphasise how friendly and welcoming the SHS AGM was on Saturday. Thank you!
My new article is out! I argue that even the most quintessentially 'national' history, like the history of the British navy, is actually profitably studied from a transnational angle. You can find it in the Annales Historiques de la Révolution Française
Congrats 2020 Corbett Prize winners!

I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported me and believed in me. I am thrilled to say I am due to start as Lumley Junior Research Fellow

in October!
Two weeks ago it was gently mentioned to me that maybe I should tweet about this, but then I forgot again... so, a month ago I passed my viva! I really enjoyed it and somehow I didn't have corrections, so at some point soon I'll probably get those two dr letters...
My article 'Towards a Transnational History of the C18th British Navy' is now available in English! Just a tiny taster hopefully, I'm almost done editing a much broader book manuscript draft...
Many thanks to Aurélien Lignereux, Maxime Kaci & Anna Karla.
Oh! I've just realised that my 2019 article in the Annales Historiques de la Révolution Française is open access! It's on how even the most 'national' history, like the history of the
#RoyalNavy
, is actually profitably studied from a
#transnational
angle.
Foreign Jack Tars examines the service of non-British seamen in the late C18th and early C19th Royal Navy, and shows how the latter sat at the crossroads of transnational currents of labour migration. It also questions the very meaning of the term 'foreigner'. 2/3
This book stems from my PhD, which I did under the amazing supervision of

Over the past few months I've been really awed by the generosity, thoroughness, kindness, and insight with which several anonymous peer reviewers commented on my work. In this crisis, and without reward, remuneration or even recognition. More reminders to try and pay forward.

This seems obvious, but... it's OK to stop for lunch!! Also, camera/phone batteries usually don't last a full day of nonstop use, so bring spares if you can, and a charger for sure (charge every inactive second, while waiting for docs, lunch, toilet break...).
This was such a thoughtful and touching gesture, among many today. I am very honoured and I had a really happy evening. Thank you very much to everyone in the Fachverband Medizingeschichte for your warmth and kindness.

In Italy, in addition to these security checks, synagogues and Jewish schools have 24/7 protection by the military, who stand watch with guns in front of the building. It's simply appalling that this is what is needed.

One of the most concerning aspects of this whole

Mayor and PCC elections are run through a Supplementary Vote system -- it means we get a first AND a second choice. Everyone should really use both!
'All candidates who aren't my favourite one are equally bad' is a dangerous fallacy. There's bad and there's worse.
An advanced copy of my article 'Patronage and insanity: tolerance, reputation and mental disorder in the British navy 1740–1820' in Historical Research is available online right now!
The piece looks at seamen's own experiences of health, sickness, and medicine, trying to complement our current top-down focus on the Navy's medical personnel, policies, and institutions. 2/

Uno studio della storica

rivela che la marina britannica nel XVIII secolo non badava troppo alla nazionalità dei propri marinai: un esempio di come spesso la necessità abbatta le frontiere.
Always great to see how football brings out rabid nationalism, benevolent apology of the filthiest cheating, creepy comments on players' bodies, vengefulness, credit-taking for others' achievements and a lot of other lovely stuff even from the nicest and most sensible quarters.
2/4 In particular, I focus on how looking at the perspective of the many thousands of 'foreigners' who served in the C18th Navy can really affect important debates in naval history.
The events I am about to relate began on a December afternoon, when I had invited Lady Carrington and certain of her friends to tea. And then the dragons arrived.

This is the kind of filthy racist and sexist abuse that
@PriyamvadaGopal
is getting for being relentlessly accomplished, brave, and outspoken. And people dare suggest there is 'no real issue'.

A humbling thought - I've just read a hugely popular novel that I found shallow, predictable, and intellectually pretentious. But millions of people loved it and found solace and insight in it.
Maybe bad reviews simply shouldn't exist (other than on factual or ethical grounds)?
