Elated to say I successfully defended my PhD on the Apocalypsis Nova (🎉) and the early modern entanglements of prophecy, theology and sacred history! A truly wonderful discussion between disciplines and academic traditions: so many divides to bridge, so much to do!

Historians, what do you wish you had known before your first trip to an archive or library? I've been asked to participate in a small departmental workshop on the matter for 1st year PhDs and I am really curious about other perspectives on working with sources, libraries, etc.

Often we talk about the known copies of a text (either print or manuscript) to discuss its social and intellectual life, from its circulation to its use by readers. But I often think that there is almost a survivor bias in this: what about the lost ones? (1/-)

The logic behind it seems to be the same "if I couldn't do it and others could, it wasn't my fault, it's just them". 1) Latin isn't just a private school lang., the world doesn't revolve around your particular education system. 2) You can self-teach yourself languages. 2/2

I keep forgetting how amazing of a museum Villa Borghese is, how much I like Saint Jerome and how crazy good Raphael can be.

Exciting! @WilsonLibUNC just acquired its 9 millionth volume: a collection of approximately 900 woodcut printing blocks from the Propaganda Fide press

Transcribing a letter from fervent reader of the Ap. N., and seeing a research rabbit hole open before me: here he discusses a prophetic painting as a source for the beliefs he was imprisoned for: "Molte et forti congetture ho allegato [...] che quella pittura sia da Dio"

Another paper I have really liked, Nancy Farriss and Yucatec Mayan ideas about time. For cultures with a cyclical conception of time, the past is a prophecy. For those with a linear one, it's a prologue. Never was so much about prophecy and time said in so few words.

Magliabecchi's bust always shocks me, aptly placed as it is, whenever I go use some of those manuscripts that were once his. Brutto ma buono, like the Prato sweets; "ipse museum inambulans et viva quaedam bibliotheca".

A wish for @internetarchive (although maybe it doesn't make sense with the lawsuit going on): it would be cool to have a centralised donation service so patrons could collectively acquire a book and donate it to you for scanning so that it would be available for digital lending.

My first dip into DH! Really looking forward to learn from the people at @UNEDMadrid and explore what distant, diachronic reading of Christian prophecies reveals. (Also, send me all early modern prophecies you have ever laid eyes on! 👀)

Browsing Granada's capitular archive catalogue: on the offense commited by the archbishopric of Granada in executing a black person in 1532; royal provisions on gitanos, same year; the exchange of 100 Christian prisoners for 500 Muslim prisoners and 1000 Arabic books in 1690...

Serious question: why doesn't @bibliovaticana digitize existing microfilms of manuscripts that are unavailable due to poor condition? Wouldn't it make more sense to prioritize those over digitizations of available mss?
